I remember Duggie from way,way back, I was at the kennels when he went to his first home and saw him at training. It is just so lovely to read how well and contented he is. I love a happy ending. X

I had this fabulous photo sent to me of Duggie enjoying his new garden in Northumberland with Misty and Lucy (and Dad Douglas too!) We miss you very much. Gina (Duggie's mum) told me it is wonderful to see them in full stride and absolutely loving having a gallop whilst Misty loves to roll on the grass!

Hello from Duggie, Lucy and Misty. Haven't posted a comment for a long while as we have been busy moving house all the way to a little village a few miles west of Berwick on Tweed. The best part is now having a garden big enough for the greys to run round. It was lovely to see them stretch their legs for the first time off lead. After a couple of mad zoomies they settled down with us in the shade. Misty loves rolling on the grass so now she can do that to her hearts content. Last week they had their first beach experience...Lucy was as high as a kite (literally!) with excitement. We shall all miss visiting Daybreaks but will keep you updated on our Northumbrian adventures. xxx

It was so lovely to see this special lad again today at the kennels. My apologies to Duggie for being in a world of my own n walking past u about 5 times before i suddenly looked back n recognised u! Duggie is looking amazing, he's put some weight on n his face has filled out but that is no excuse for me ignoring u! He gave me a lovely hello n lapped up the fuss as always n seems so chilled n happy in his forever home. Thank you foggie for the amazing progress u have made with him! I promise next time u visit Duggie i will come fuss u straight away! Much love to all of u from me n my boyz. X

Oh Foggy, your update has really made my day! I am so so happy that everything's ok for this beautiful boy. I looked after him for a bit when he came on the Stratford walk with us and he was so cuddly.
He just needed someone who understood him and would give him time, patience and love.....sounds like he has all of that and a whole load more!
You lucky boy Duggie! xxxxxxxxxx

Hello again, been off air for a while as had trouble logging in but ok now I've got my new password. Just wanted to say what a gorgeous boy Duggie is turning out to be. He has settled really well and is SO loving. He still has a few anxious rumbles when he meets strangers, especially male, but is learning to tolerate and even accept attention from them. Once he knows ,he loves to lean on them for cuddles and he's a big lad so you know you've been leant on! In a morning he heads you off at the pass until you've given him his fair share of cuddles, which is a lot! He is such a good lad, doesn't wee where he shouldn't, asks to go out when he needs to, doesn't steal food, looks at us with love in his eyes..... When out walking and he sees another dog he does get excited and barks but it's just an exuberant 'Hello', nothing aggressive. He's just had a big, comfy stretch, half on, half off his bed as usual. Lucy (Angel) went off the rails a bit when Duggie arrived, even though she loved him, and reverted to her wicked 'Lucifer' ways but glad to report she has calmed down now although still as bonkers as ever! Woofs from Misty, Lucy and Duggie xxx

Gosh Foggy, you really do like a challenge don't you? 1st Lucy (Angel) and now the troubled Duggie. You and I are kindred spirits, I always have a soft spot for the quirky hounds... It looks as if you're doing a wonderful job and if there's one thing I've learnt is that they always pay you back 100 fold! Good luck and lots of happiness to you all Xx

Duggie is doing well, enjoying discovering his new neighbourhood although still barking at other dogs. He has a very deep bark! What with him sounding off and Lucy reverting to her wicked ways (middle child syndrome) it's utter chaos until we get past the other village doggies. Misty goes bonkers when she sees a cat so much as twitch a whisker and then the other two join in. keeps us on our toes. I think Duggie's growling is less aggression and more anxiety when he meets new people. On the third time of meeting two of our friends whilst out on a walk he ended up leaning in to them for cuddles. So hopefully he will improve with time. xx

We now have two Douglas Coates in the family. One is my husband and the other is Duggie Dog whom we adopted this afternoon after fostering him for a week. He got a bit stressed out at the kennels this afternoon with all the comings and goings and was growling by the time we posed for the re-homing pic(can you hear him?) He's now crashed out on the settee...he definitely likes a quiet life! xx

A few grumbles when Duggie met Misty and Lucy but then all ok. A quiet night all together in the doggie den till 6.30 am when they all decided they needed nervous wees...Misty is not usually rising n shining till about 9am! Duggie leans in for a cuddle and loves a massage...he's just a big softie really. We met a friend on this morning's walk and only had a couple of very short grumbles from Duggie so that wasn't bad. Has eaten well and is now flat out in the lounge. xx

What can I say..... Duggie is being an absolute dream at our house - can be left throughout the day, is clean, eats well, a bit excited on the lead but just to meet and greet other dogs around the park to say hello to. He has totally stopped growling at us now when we go near him in the house and is very affectionate. He is just very grumpy with people he doesn't know to start with but soon gets used to them. I am desperate to find this fella a home....... please give me a call if you would like more information. He doesn't sell himself at the kennels but if you would like to see him at our house, you are more than welcome! The kettle will be on!

Having taken Duggie to the last Stratford Walk can I say I agree with everything Ruth has said about him.
Also Duleek Dandys comments after meeting him on the walk I think also sum up his character and nature perfectly.
I am sure that inside this outwardly grumpy greyhound is a loving dog waiting to form a close bond with the right person.
Lets all hope he gets his chance to prove it soon.

Dear Duggie

I have sent you a cuddle today in the hope someone will be willing to give you a loving home very soon.

In my experience all three of our four legged friends have their little issues that over time we have learnt to understand and I am sure there will be someone out there to help you through your worries.

Good luck Duggie.

Duggie has been coming home with me every night and we have seen a massive change in how he is. If he is tired - he is grumpy (can't we all be!) and just likes to be left alone in his bed.

On his walks, he likes to shout across the park to all the other dogs to say hello and once up close, has a sniff, wags his tail and looks out for the next dog to say hi to!

He is totally clean in the house, sleeps well, eats well and loves playing with his ball on a rope.

I am desperate to find this fella a home to call his own. This would be one with no children and not too busy. He is VERY wary of people he doesn't know and sadly will growl to start with if approached but if you call him to you, he is normally absolutely fine but to someone who hasn't got confidence with dogs, this could be quite frightening. He will keep coming home with me until he finds the right home - there must be one out there..... so if you are interested, please give me a call.

Because of his unpredictable nature, he really needs a very patient home where he can be understood.

If someone was prepared to adopt him, I would fund his food for the rest of his life.......

You get my cuddle today Duggie you gorgeous boy. I dont know what changed your mind about people but with all the love and affection you deserve, I know you can learn to trust again. You are so very handsome and deserve your own home with a family who understand you and let you trust again in your own time - I know you can do it. We had a wonderful older grey (Billy) who had only every lived in kennels and was very nervous and scared of people but with loads of our love and our time he changed and we had some very precious years with him before we lost him to Rainbow Bridge. It can be done but takes understanding. I know your future home is waiting for you and in the meantime you have the marvelous kennel staff to look after you. All my love Duggie boy, Terry XXXXX

He is great with my 2 non grey boys n he is always so excited, waging his tail n jumping up n down when we get to the kennels so that he can share the kitchen with my boys. He has always been perfect with them n I never worry when I leave them alone to do walks. I have a real soft spot for him n if only my circumstances would enable it he would definitely be joining my boys at home! Really hope his time comes soon! X

It was so lovely to see Duggie enjoying his day out. He was such a good boy with no reaction at all when he got slightly grumbled at by 2 different dogs on 2 occasions.

It seems that his growling is not always meant in a bad way.....he was low growling for a few seconds at his Auntie Mandy when he wanted fusses. Low growling, but moving his face towards her and totally leaning against her......now if he hadn't liked the fusses he would have moved away, but he didn't....he went up to her & then when she stopped, was actively looking for more fusses.

Maybe he uses this noise as a communication sometimes.

I do hope he finds someone who will be able to give him an understanding home. (Also just want to say a big well done to Daz & Julie for trying so hard with him)

Lots of love Duggie xxx

Duggie, I'm so glad you were able to have a day out today - you were so poorly on Friday and worried us all, but I think it was just too hot for you. I agree with Norman - when Duggie knows & trusts you, and you respect him and his space, he can be so affectionate and loving. I really feel he would prefer a quiet life in a home where he wont be disturbed by the noise and general busy nature of children. Thank you so much Norman for giving him a break from the kennels, and let's hope that there is someone out there who will give this lovely boy the chance he deserves. Big cuddles xxxxx

Duggie has enjoyed a tiring day out with 28 other canine friends on todays Stratford Walk.
As is probably obvious from reading comments on his website he is not a totally straightforward greyhound to understand.
Unfortunately his first reaction when meeting someone new is to give out a growl. This is obviously a trait that is not going to help him find a permanent home. However fom my own experiences with him I find that once he knows and trusts you he is an extremely loving and affectionate dog who is not aggressive.
Neither is he aggressive towards fellow greyhounds and although he does sometimes bark loudly at non greyhounds I have never seen him become aggressive towards them.
If there is anyone prepared to give Duggie a trial they may very well be amazed at the bond that could be formed with him.
Because children might find his growling habit intimidating an all adult household would probably suit him best.

We have had a few grumbles but now he has settled in just fine. He was very grumpy on his walk yesterday morning when he saw dogs in the distance and yet he is great with other breeds in the kitchen at the kennels!

I am going the Dog Listener Training with him (http://www.rgtperrybarr.co.uk/events/743/) to see if we can work things through and help him but this is not until 22nd August.

He is ok with people he knows and trusts, but those he doesn't - he gets very anxious with and will growl if approached.

I have ordered him a jacket so people are aware that he has issues and hopefully it will arrive tomorrow. He needs a quiet home, with just adults who will totally give him his space especially when he is on his bed as this is where his main issue is. He LOVES playing with a tennis ball and does seem to enjoy the company of other dogs.

With having Ada at home at the moment and another poorly grey, I really need to take him back to the kennels but just can't bear to...... please give me a call if you think you could foster or (even better) offer a home to this fella..... Ruth 0121 782 7702.

I popped into the kennels yesterday afternoon, and was greeted by the lovely Duggie happily lying in the kitchen with Sara's 2 boys. He was as good as gold, I put my bag on the floor and he just had to pop his head in there to see if there was anything exciting in there -sadly, there wasn't! This beautiful boy just needs a proper chance - I really hope it's not long in coming now. Big cuddles. xxxx

Walked this lovely fella today and was a gent on the lead. He just needs a chance and some patience from humans and he would be a great addition to any family. He might come over a bit grumpy at times but in my experience thats most men for you!!!!!! He has a tough exterior but is a big softie underneath. Good luck to you my gentle gent,

We were so pleased to take handsome Duggie to Hatton today, along with the lovely Lula Belle. He was obviously happy to be out an about and relaxed into the day, enjoying lots so fuss from everyone. He behaved very well and was the perfect gentleman with Lula Belle, travelling nicely with her, and letting her lean on him for security at the event. Thank you Duggie for spending the day with us. Hoping you find that perfect home very soon. xxxx

Was at the kennels today and have reserved Millie. However spent a little time with duggie and have also walked him a couple of times. I think he could be a lovely dog in the right environment. He seems generally quite loving and I think just needs a lot of gentle care and attention. If it wasn't for the fact I mind my grandchildren (quite noisy!) Twice a week I would have considered him but don't think he could have coped with them. Hoping he finds that special loving home very soon. See you Wednesday for walks, duggie. Xx

Duggie I think about you a lot. Walked you a few weeks ago and you were good although a bit growly if someone stroked you with your muzzle on. Had cuddles with you when I put you back in the kennel and you were very sweet. It upset me when you started to cry and whine and I was so happy when you went out on foster. Hoping your problems get sorted and you can find that forever home. On hols now for 3 weeks but sending you a virtual cuddle and saving a real one for when we get back if you are still there. Xx

Duggie has been returned this morning. Unfortunately since being rehomed in August 2013 he still has had settling in issues. It has been a concern since he was rehomed that he had a problem with his neck or back and has been seen by a vet and in addition a chiropractor who couldn't pinpoint a cause for his intermittent behaviour.

Sadly he snapped at the 6 year old and they feel it really is in Duggie's interest that he is returned.

The owners are distraught but really feel this is the best thing for Duggie and we support their decision.

Today we have the visiting canine massage team who checked Duggie and have pinpointed various problems with his back which would explain the owners concerns and we will now continue to work with him until he is better.

We had problems with Blue keeping weight on and switching to Burns was the best thing we did.Yes it initially costs more, but I believe it saves you money in the long run,Ruths comments are spot on about Burns but I would add it keeps your dog healthier, so hopefully you wont get any vets bills for any problems a lesser food could cause. Also the Lounge smells a lot better in the evening! Blue who is 7 now looks really good and even managed a 5th place at Nottingham in the 5-7yr category, she would have never done that before.I would urge people to try a bag and see the difference it makes to your dog,and the price difference is not as big as it initially looks in practise.Well done Daz-n-Julie for working through the problem Im sure Duggie will reward you for your patience, and sharing your experiences will Im sure help others. We love Duggie he got on so well with our 2 when we looked after him for the day, If you ever need to offload him for a day he's very welcome here Ruths got our number.x

Thanks Daz-n-Julie for sharing your experiences in such a very honest way. He's a fabulous lad and had several admirers when he was in the kennels and I'm pleased all is now well once more.
The Duggie story is very interesting and would be something that any new owner or prospective owner should read, just in case. It's very easy to understand why you made the changes you did to give Duggie the other food, both economically and morally. Amazing results too when you switched back - definitely food for thought (no pun intended). No-one can guarantee a totally easy ride from here on in, but you are certainly on the right path. x

This is such a heartwarming story. I remember Duggie as a super boy when I used to see him in the kennels and I met his new family when they came to collect him on a very busy day. Sometimes it feels like very hard work indeed with a new grey - for all sorts of different reasons - but with oodles of love and support and consistency - and the right food! - my experience is that greys will always respond and make our lives richer. Well done to Duggies family for sticking with it - and Duggie - what a lucky boy you are. xx

Thank you so much Daz-n-Julie. Your comment means a lot and I am so pleased everything is working out for you and Duggie as I know how upsetting it was for you, but I am grateful you took the time to come and talk to me.

Sadly so many people don't realise the dramatic effect just changing the food can have on a dog - I know it from experience with my own dogs and despite Burns being so much more expensive per sack compared to other brands, (ie from £13 to £42 is a massive difference) it is such a high quality, hypo allergenic food so you feed less because the dog absorbs more (hence less toileting problems) so really it doesn't hit the pocket so hard. For those that don't know, a 15kg sack can last up to around 50 days.

I am always here to try and help - I might not get it right all the time but I am still learning however I am desperately grateful to you for persevering with Duggie - this means so much to me. Taking on a dog is such a big commitment and you have proved that he really is part of your family by sticking with him and helping him through xxxx

I'd just like to say a massive thank you to Ruth for all your help & support!
We changed Duggie's food after about a month of having him & everything changed! We didn't realise until recently that it was the food. Duggie became aggressive towards hubby, lazy, lethargic, always drinking loads, pooing loads, weeing all the time...including both in the house (alot), malting everywhere, pulling on the lead & barking like mad if we saw another animal. He was loosing weight so we upped his food but that didn't make a difference, if anything it just caused diarrhea. We tried dog training classes which he would bark through the whole thing & stress him out causing more malting & diarrhea. We tried cage training to stop him toileting in the house, we even had Duggie checked over by a chiropractor. I would take Duggie for a walk just before going to bed myself so rather late & still nothing worked! I was at the end of my tether then remembered something Ruth said about how some foods can change a dog's personality so I popped in to see her & to buy some burns. Ruth has been amazing & so supportive & had we listened to her in the first place we would never have gone through all this!
I changed his food purely for cost & it's the worst decision i've ever made! I'd seen an advert for dog food designed especially for retired greyhounds & a pound from each pack went to the greyhound trust so me being tight thought perfect! 2 bags for cheaper than 1 burns plus i'm donating to charity. I'd asked on fb if anyone had any experience of this food but didn't get any negative comments so went ahead.
After realising it was the food all along I thought we would have to 'wean' him off it & back on to burns but Ruth advised we just swap & I swear by the next evening we had 'our' Duggie back! His poos have gone from being wet & the size of a donkey's to 1 or 2 small hard logs (sorry to get descriptive lol), he's loving again & really affectionate. Touch wood we've had no mess in the house (it's been a week since swapping back), he has more energy, he's no longer destroying things for attention including his own toys, no aggression, i'm able to control him on walks when we pass other animals & he's not malting half as much. I really can't get over what a difference burns makes. I thought Ruth was just spoiling 'her babies' but I get it now & I have to say it's worth every penny!
I really hope posting this can help anyone who may have changed food or be considering it to stick with burns. This other food ddidn't just have physical changes but emotional too, it changed his whole personality & it's just great having the Duggie we all fell in love with back!
Without the support of Ruth we might not have persevered, it's great knowing there is always someone there who's been it to guide you through any problems. Thank you & massive hugs Ruth for helping us get our Duggie back xxx

Star our 2nd hound got very possessive about the sofa & actually started weeing on it to let us know it was hers. We then refused both our hounds access to the lounge during the day whilst we were at work & overnight. The weeing stopped and they had to learn that the sofa was only something they could share with us. This was a huge success. Rolo our first hound is now trying his luck at coming upstairs at bedtime but has now learnt that he gets taken back downstairs & then the dining room door where they are suppose to sleep get closed. They are cheeky things which will try their luck if they can. Our old lurcher had the full run of the house but knew that it didn't belong to him but these greys seem a little more confident at times. Be firm and remember who is boss. I tell my two they can own the house when they can pay the mortgage which they have failed to do so far! Training classes will help too & you will gain lots of shared knowledge.

Hi Daz and Julie Just think of the kennels at Daybreaks - that's how Duggie would have lived all his life up to retirement with a shelf to live on . I don't let my dogs on the furniture so when I go out I leave dining chairs on the sofas etc and that stops them. If he is on the sofa don't try to pull him off- you don't want to get into a row with him, just have a frozen Kong ready stuffed with things like mashed potatoes, cheese etc that are difficult to get out .. call him or wave it under his nose and drop the Kong on his bed. When he gets off the sofa give him plenty of praise and you can also say 'Off' so he knows he's doing what you want. It's better to keep him off in the first place with chairs etc - you don't want him to think everytime you approach him he's going to be punished - he doesn't know the sofa's not his .. he's always had a raised bed before and he has a great deal of new stuff to learn about as a newly retired boy. It would be worth getting to one of our training classes too. Julie x

Hi Daz-n-Julie - you are definitely doing the right thing. The problem with greyhounds is that all their lives they have had a raised bed in their kennel so they automatically feel it is their place. He just doesn't think he is doing wrong but he will soon learn with his training :-)

He has 2 beds in the lounge (1 we were given & haven't put away yet) where he can sleep totally undisturbed but he still chooses the sofa. Tonight he pushed his luck too far so got squirted & banned from the sofa! The sofa is the family space & he will learn that if he wants no disturbances then he uses his own bed! Lol wish me luck with that! X

Hi Daz-n-Julie - definitely don't let him on the sofa if he is being a bit grumpy :-( Greyhounds really don't like to be touched/moved/disturbed if they are trying to rest - this is something that would never happen in a kennel environment so he needs to adjust to home life. Make sure he knows where he can go to sleep undisturbed without being moved - a comfy bed for him in a corner will be perfect - please give me a call if you need any advice. Ruth x

I spent some time with Duggie on Saturday. He really needs his forever home soon. We played ball out the back for a while and I sat giving him a fuss in his kennel. He spent some time standing at the front of the kennel then slowly came and stood by me for a fuss, then he lay down next to me and had a great big fuss. Everytime I stopped he'd look at me with his big soulful eyes until I started again. He is a wonderful boy.

Oh Duggie, I'm so sorry we didn't take you home with us on Saturday. I just thought you were too interested in the cats and although I don't think you would hurt my cats (you just wanted to play!) I know Walter would be very scared of you :( I really hope you find your forever home soon. I give you my cuddle today beautiful boy. Xxxx

We had the pleasure of Duggie for the day, what a gentleman he is! He enjoyed his walk to the park, with Blue&Ben,meeting other people and dogs.He did show quite an interest in my toast, but moved away when told.He was so well behaved all day, that it felt wrong to take him back to the kennels. He got on really well with our two, being very polite towards them,in fact Blue carried his muzzle away as if to say he doesn't need that.He is very friendly and will make a lovely companion and pet,I wish we could have him! If your looking for a beautiful loving dog uve just found him ,don't miss out!

Duggie is struggling a little with the laminate flooring in the hall. He concentrates toonmuch, spreads his toes and slips. He usually makes it to his food and the front door though, bless. He is turning into quite a waggy dog, plsased to see us when wevreturn.

Lovely to hear how well Duggie is doing. It has been a long journey since finishing racing just after Christmas and he did so well at Bark Inn while waiting for his place. I believe he loves his food so if he eats you out of house and home don't be surprised!

Sounds like he is settling in nicely, bless him. It's lovely to watch them discover the world around them and start to relax into normal life. Enjoy your time with him. x

Yesterday was "a dip in the pond" day. It's just deep enough to wet the belly, so I guess he won't be doing that again! Managed to get him into a bedtime routine after last walkies of 5 min of fuss (Duggie time), then lights out and sleep. No barking or whining at all! He had a great game of chase the frisbee in the garden and is now busy sleeping it off!

Duggie seems to be settling down quite well. He is comes to the door to greet us, he sleeps soundly at night and only barks when Derek gets up in the morning. He has jumped into the car by himself for the first time today, which is great after having to lift him in. He is quiet in the car, but keen to get out when we arrive at the park. He loves squirrels! He also likes to relax with us in the garden and can be fiund dosing on the grass in a shady spot.

We took Duggie home yesterday and his first night went well. He prefers to sleep alone and has set up camp in our dining room. He was quite interested in the cats but in a curious way. He wasn't too keen on a small fluffy dog, though. A bit of barking and excitement. Today we went for a long walk and encountered a number of medium sized dogs. He was quite happy to sniff them and vice-versa. A barked at a couple of smaller dogs, but I found that he would be ok if corrected early. Will need to work a little on that one.
