Belle had lots of tramadol after her RTC and it mellowed her out a bit! Happy to report she's bouncing about again and no longer yelping. Fingers crossed it will continue. Have started her on Yumove as recommended by the vet but she's off the Metacam. Thanks everyone!

Our Rolo has pain in his spine & neck. He has spondalytis in his spine & a trapped nerve in his neck. We had him for just over a year before he started limping. We knew he was uncomfortable but didn't know he was in pain until the vet touched him in the effected areas. His condition is managed with tramadol & carprieve tablets. Our first vet gave metcam even though they had no idea why he was limping & when we got a 2nd opinion from a different vet we were told it would have no effect anyway. I have heard that some dogs don't cope with tramadol but he seems fine. We did wonder at one point if we were giving him them when he didn't really need all the meds but after reducing his dose for a few days he did get worse so we feel sure we are doing the right thing for him. I'm sure if we had a lottery win & took him to the Supervet on the TV that he would do something different with him but he is happy enough & generally not in pain. Hope you find the right medication to help Belle. Paul is very good at the massage unfortunately not an option for Rolo as he will not tolerate being touched & becomes aggressive even though he knows Paul well. Good luck.

Just to add to the mix... We had Ben from another rescue at 3 and a bit years old. When he went for his yearly jabs at around 4 and half, he was diagnosed with arthritis in his hip and back. He was put on Metacam (for a 30kg dog) and we were told he'd need special food at £70 a bag and probably be looking at tablets, higher metacam doses blah blah blah.... Anyway, we researched about metacam and realised that actually Ben wasn't going to be on a high - and maybe higher - dose of metacam forever, or be eating £70 bags of dog food either. It has to be said, Ruth responded to our request re food and we ended up visiting her and putting Ben (and Lucy) on Burns at much less than £70 a bag. Over a few weeks, we gradually reduced Ben's metacam down to a dose for a 7 - 10 kg dog, gave him oily fish 3 -4 times a week and kept him active. 2 and a half years ago, we took Ben completely off metacam (after about 18 months of using it) and switched him to Joint Aid supplement instead. We've changed his food a couple of times but stuck to Joint Aid and oily fish, and he's now 8 and half, doing well and walked the 3 - 4 miles round Chasewater Lake on Saturday and then did some nosiness-related car surfing on the way home, rather than lying down immediately. There are occasions he'll try to scratch with his back leg and can't quite reach due to stiffness, but to be honest, he is FAR from creaking. I hope your Belle will be feeling better soon x J

Daisydog remarks 'I am a big wooooose around men too but my pals Lola and Lenas dad Paul is supadupa. He knows just how to be with a nervous girl like me - so do please consider trying massage to see if it will help belle if your vet agrees'. Salty hugs from me and mum at the sea side xx

Hello everyone and thank-you for the lovely supportive messages. Belle was yelping in the night but has been much better today. I do wonder if she had an injury that was making her yelp. I'm hoping it's something that simple.
What I failed to say was Fivelands did say she had arthritis in both front legs when they xrayed her broken leg. It was her hip area that's been troubling her the last couple of days. It just seemed sudden to go from agile to yelping overnight. But what do I know.
And yes she did have the op done at Willows - we haven't been back there yet, she broke through the insurance maximum payout straight after her op! I'm just so relieved she's happy today and hoping she won't have too many more problems.
She's doing much better walking out where the accident happened as well so we're very proud of her :-)

I don't know if this will help at the health shop you can buy dog oil its £2.99 and it's been reported that its good for pain not only in dogs but humans to I believe trainers use it still if the dogs get pain

Sorry to hear of problems with lovely Belle We too had problem using Metacam when our girl Ele ripped her tail She became very poorly..off her food Lethargic and vomiting and after seeing several vets, one told us it was all due to being on Metacam too long ! She improved after it was stopped My brothers Husky had similar problem with her hip- in a lot of pain getting up- xrays didn't show much..sick on Metacam...so he tried her on Doggonepain after research and advice Gets it online and she was better within a week Worth a try I would think Sending Belle hugs x x

Oh poor Belle - I have been wondering how you are. So sorry to hear of your problems and I hope that a vet finds out what is troubling you very soon. Our 6 greys have glucosamine daily - I dont know if it will ease your pain Belle but it can only help although you do need to still be seen by a vet. You have my cuddle today. Get well soon pretty girl.

Oh Belle, you poor little mite, I was only wondering yesterday how you were getting on ... this sounds longwinded but please bear with me as we've found that long term use of metacam can cause other problems. We recently adopted Brae who suffered a broken hock a couple of years ago. It wasn't set properly and is clear to see, so thinking we were doing the 'right thing', we asked our vet if Brae was suffering pain in this area. There was no way of knowing, so we decided to put her on metacam a few days after she came home (Jan 2015). All was well until about a month ago, when without warning she started vomiting daily, although her diet/medicine hadn't changed. She was seen by the vet, given an anti sickness jab & antacid tablets for 2 weeks and seemed fine again. Then, just 2 days after I'd started to give her metacam once more, she was sick 3 times in 48 hours, so back to the vet where a full blood test was done, another anti sickness jab given along with another two week course of ant acid pills. Thankfully, the vet is sure the sickness is nothing serious but is being caused by long term use of metacam which is upsetting her stomach, so we've been advised to stop this immediately. Brae is now taking glucosamine sulphate tablets to 'oil the joint' and ease any discomfort that she may have. It may be that Belle doesn't have any side effects from metacam, but I wouldn't want another beauty to go through what our little girl has, as it's been horrible for her and upsetting for us. I hope that Belle's discomfort soon eases. Keep us posted, Tash

Hi Withnail1969. At 4 years old, l would be surprised lf she has arthritis.Maybe the plates and screws are causing her some pain.
l can only advise, but if she was my dog, l would be inclined to seek a second opinion, and maybe some more X - rays. She can't live on pain killers for the rest of her life, l am not a fan of Fivelands l'm afraid, and would never use them. Did she not have the op done at Willows, or am i mistaken. lf you live on that side of Birmingham, then try Manor Vets at Edgbaston, and ask to see David Beechey ,he is superb and he will work very closely with you. He has helped many of our dogs, when other vets couldn't. Their phone No is 0121 429 2829. Cuddles to Belle.X.

Poor Belle, hope the Metacam kicks in soon and she's more comfortable. Have you thought about canine massage? Paul Warman (who is Daddy to Lola and Lena, both Daybreaks Greys and also a Daybreaks volunteer), comes to give our 9 year old a massage session every so often to keep him supple after a neck injury. Paul has a website wmk9massage.co.uk with all his details on. Paul does require permission from your vet before treating, which is a legal requirement and very reassuring that things are being done properly. We're registered at Fivelands too and they were very happy to oblige with the consent form in our boy's case. We've found Paul's techniques to be a great help and Gent loves his massages, almost falling asleep now when he has them! Mand x

Belle had her leg x-rayed a couple of weeks ago and Chris at Fivelands was very pleased with it, v straight and though movement is limited, all is well :-)
Today Belle was yelping when getting up and lying down. We had her checked out and the vet thinks she has arthritis in her hips. She's having metacam and I've ordered some Yumove. She's still yelping :-( Does anyone have any tips or suggestions?
Cheers!

Thanks for asking about Belle.
She's doing pretty well thanks. She is going for short walks now. She goes onto 3 legs as soon as she gets stressed. She's keen to go out but is very anxious as soon as she sees a car or people. She wears a harness but it still doesn't feel safe as she buckaroos a lot. We'll have to work on that.
Her wound is still open but getting smaller slowly. As she has plates in her leg it's the risk of infection getting in through the wound. We'll be so happy when that wound heals :-)

Belle saw the vet who was worried about her progress a week ago. Today she was really pleased with her improvement. I've been giving her coconut oil to help healing and it might be a coincidence but her wound is almost half the size! She's now in a much smaller dressing so is starting to weight bear. We're so happy that she's improving :-)

She's been through such a lot and I know you must be feeling very despondent at this latest news. Took Belle to the vets last night to change her dressings. The vet was concerned about her lack of sensation in her leg and the lack of weight bearing. Also the wound isn't healing and she had a quick chew at it yesterday. She said they may end up having to amputate after all. Another vet then had a look and was less negative but it's come as a shock. Very sad for Belle today.

Belle is funny. She's definitely happier and bouncier. She is seeing a lovely vet, Angharad at Fivelands, who is doing everything she can for her. Belle has quite a large open wound on her leg and they are concerned about it. She's getting some iodine patches and manuka honey to use on the wound. Her back leg was also concerning them on Monday but yesterday was much better so that's good news. Angharad is so lovely to Belle she doesn't mind going now and she used to hate it. Thanks for asking about her!

Hi there Belle's family. It's a while ago and my memory isn't great, but Norris had his op in late-ish June and after a few weeks being confined to the house (on a lead when moving between rooms and in the garden) he started 10 min walks 2 or 3 times a day. He then had a checkup around 6 or 7 weeks after surgery and the xrays showed the healing was progressing as it should but there was more to come and the increasing controlled exercise was to continue. At the time he left us in the August I'm pretty sure he was up to around 30 mins lead walking. I think after around a further month with his new family he was allowed off lead (should this be wanted!) which would have been in the September that year.
If your girl was special to you before... I'm sure she'll be even more special now :-)) We're keeping everything crossed she is allowed home tomorrow. xxxx

My boy Bouncer broke his front leg very badly and was looked after by the Willows. It was heavily plated, and the plates stayed in for nearly five years - in the end he started to get nfections and the vets there thought the best thing was to take them out! They were right. He lived a very happy and full life with the plates and without and is now chasing bunnies in the sky!
Just do exactly what the Willows say - I lived for about three months with my heart in my mouth - the worst bit for me was managing the wound area cos the skin is soooo fragile and Bouncer not understanding that cuddles and fuss and pretty much everything had to be done very very carefully. I had another grey at the time too so did not let them out together and it was a long time about 3 months) before I let Bouncer off the lead in the garden - I was that woman with the torch at night -. But the fab people at the Willows will give you all the information and details you need and they have a brilliant out of hours emergency service and follow up. Belle is a lucky girl to have you and them! Bouncer broke his leg down a rabbit hole so I have always been anxious about letting my dogs run off lead since. Daisydog however is too posh to run and dawdles gracefully. Big hugs from us. Linda and Paul can give you lots of helpful hints too.

Belle has my cuddle today. We are so so pleased to hear her leg has been saved by the fabulous surgeons at the Willows. Now her recovery period at home will be all important and they will provide guidelines on exercise/restrictions etc.
We went through this with Norris who broke his hock when on foster with us a few years ago and he was pinned and plated at the Willows too. We followed their instructions to the letter and so did his permanent family (he went to them part way through his rehab) and now you really would struggle to tell he'd had the injury unless you know. That's not to say any of this will be easy but with your love, care and dedication I am sure she will make a brilliant recovery. Sending you positive thoughts and our very bestest wishes. I'm sure she will be very happy to come home tomorrow (everything crossed) Linda, Paul & the girls xxxx

Oh Belle, you had us all worried there... You are one very brave girl. Let's hope that with everyone's continual positive thoughts, you recover quickly from your op and that you're soon back home with your loving family. Big hugs to Them and You beautiful. Please ask Mom & Dad to keep the updates coming so we can all share in your progress. Special presents for you from Santa this year! T, J & R xxx

How wonderful to hear that belle is ok.Daisydog wears an xtradog fleece harness which you may want to have a look at if belle gets spooked easily. Auntie Ruth knows about them and they come in lovely colours! Salty hugs for belle today. Xx

Fantastic news that The Willows have given such a positive report after Belles surgery.
I remember taking this beautiful friendly girl to one of our Stratford Walks where she won the hearts of everyone she met.
Get well soon Belle and enjoy the long and happy life you deserve.

Fantastic news and don't feel guilty accidents happen unfortunately it is how we deal with them that is important and it sounds as though you have done the absolute best for your girl. Wishing Belle a speedy recovery.

Well Willows were fantastic. Belle was in surgery for over 4 hours and she has had two metal plates inserted. The vet feels she has a 'great' chance of success with them. We are so thrilled and if it wasn't for Ruth's advice this wouldn't have happened. We are eternally grateful and our other greyhound Tinsel will be chuffed to have her doggy sister back home later this week.
Thank-you all for your positivity. The guilt has been all consuming but hopefully now we can start to enjoy Belle again (and maybe even get some sleep!!)

Sending more positive thoughts for Beautiful Belle (& hugs for the family) xxx

Although this is not a UK site & talks about osteo, it is helpful for dealing with an amputation.
My friend's girl has osteo and her front leg amputated and she has made an amazing recovery.

Daisydog and I send positive thoughts and hugs from the seaside. We know a beautiful three legged grey called Mabel who lost her front leg with a tumour. She recovered well and manages on three very well indeed so paws crossed for Belle. The willows are wonderful. You could do not better than take her there. Xxx

Thank-you all so much for your kindness.
Belle got spooked by a man in the dark and slipped her collar. She was hit by a car straight away. She is stable at the moment but her pain isn't well managed. We made the decision to wait another night so Willows can do the surgery. She will need an amputation of her front left leg. We are just glad she is alive at this stage.
We are beside ourselves with worry.
She is insured. You are such lovely people. And Ruth has been amazing as always. Will be getting an update in an hour or so, I will message again.
Please carry on with the positive thoughts for Belle, she's not out of the woods yet. xxxx

Belle has today been out on the Stratford Walk.
This stunningly attractive brindle girl behaved perfectly while travelling in the car. She socialised well with other greys and showed no problems when meeting other breeds of dog.
Hopefully her permanent home is now not far away.
