Wendy I'm so sorry poor Lottie has gone to rainbow bridge. I remember when she arrived at Daybreaks and there was some debate about her name as nobody liked Edwina. Look back at all the good times she had with you Jed and Joe. What a lovely life she had. Another bright star shines, take care Alan & Paddy xx

Ok little bit of advice please had a couple of instances today with Lottie barking and go for Joe if he happens to be on a bed she wants Joe as far as I can see hasn’t reacted and just got out of the way. Do I leave them to sort it out? On the plus side Lottie is eating much better since he arrived having completely gone off her food since losing Jed.

Lottie has been diagnosed with the canine equivalent of IBS I am waiting for some special steroid tablets that concentrate on the gut and she has been given B12 capsules to help. The condition is exacerbated by her food intolerance which we haven’t yet been able to isolate exactly what she is reacting to. She is now on Purina HA which thankfully she likes.

Poor Lottie. I hope the paste clears it up but if it comes back, maybe get her B12 levels checked. Lena had a problem with recurring diarrhoea (but not post GA) and her appetite was ok. The paste sorted it for a couple of days then it would come back. She was deficient in vitamin B12 and had a small bowel bacterial overgrowth. A course of B12 injections and a month on low dose antibiotics sorted her out. Hope Lottie is sorted very soon x

So sorry to hear Lottie isn't feeling too well. The Probiotic paste will hopefully help. We use it a lot on the kennel dogs when they have an upset stomach. I use it on my own dogs too, Bobby was really poorly a few months ago with food poisoning and it really worked for him. Xxx

Well Lotties chest X-ray is clear thank goodness she had two teeth removed the vet is astonished at how good her teeth are nearly still has a full set. Lottie does have an auto immune dry eye condition which will mean drops for the rest of her life but we can cope with that.

Poor Lottie not having a good time at the moment, took her to the vet with eye discharge which the vet thinks is dry eye caused by an auto immune so on drops for a few weeks but may need to be on them permanently, she also has developed a worrying cough so treating initially for infection possibly kennel cough although it doesn’t sound like a kennnel cough type cough, if no better then x-ray possible lung tumour and then to add to her list of woes she also has an exploding rear end probably due to something she snaffled in the field when I wasn’t looking! Fingers crossed the antibiotics work. The joys of being a greyhound mum

So sorry Lottie has been poorly. Have you looked at Tails.com ? Archive has a super sensitive and Jato has an easy digest mix both do really well on it with a few sardines or butternut squash roasted in coconut oil on top. Also after Archive was poorly and lost lots of weight and after Jato was opened up after her problems I put spoon of coconut oil in their dinner and that helps inside and out.
If you want to try tails let me know I will leave my phone number at the kennels as we have vouchers for you to get sample of food delivered. Xxx

Had a bit of a worrying time with Lottie recently took her to the vets about a month ago with an upset tummy but nothing we try seems to be working. She has had a course of steroids with no improvement, probiotics treatment, been tested for Addison’s negative and given a three day course of Panacur in case it was hook worm, poo sample also negative, ultrasound show not much apart from possibly some inflammation in her smallbowel so the vet thinks she may have developed a food allergy any suggestions please for sensitivity diets.

Well Lottie went for her vaccination yesterday. We duly signed in and when our name was called went to go into the consulting room at which point Lottie put the brakes on. Now Lottie is a big girl and when her bum hits the floor it’s rather difficult to get her up. I was pulling the vet was pushing and the waiting room was in giggles as Lottie made her rather less than elegant way into the room polishing the floor with said bum. Oh the joy of greyhounds never a dull moment they will always make you laugh.

Well Lottie has discovered that we have a hedgehog in the garden unfortunately in order to get to it involved a 4ft dive at speed off the patio, getting herself wedged between the conifer trees and the side of the patio with no room to turn around and multiple nettle stings! Throw into the mix one hooman in her pj’s and slippers. Thank you Kate for the tip on how to get a grey to open their mouth by lifting their rear legs up I can confirm it works. Thankfully hedgehog survived the Lottie encounter, Lottie is sore and bruised but ok and for awhile was doing the ministry of funny walks due in part to nettle stings I believe never a dull moment in my house.

Unfortunately have a very poorly Lottie, she has either picked something up at the vets or has reacted to some used in her op, not eaten since Weds evening and has terrible runs, off to the vets again today and the weight is dropping off her which in itself is a worry as Lottie has always been on the lean side. Suspicious that it isn't straight forward stomach bug as Jed has not contracted it which would be likely given they live together.

Well it's not every day you can say that you got trapped inside a care home with two greyhounds by a cat! The intrepid duo Jed and Lottie were doing their weekly visit and were just about to leave when we encountered the care home's cat who decided to sit outside the exit door which is glass and look at us no amount of shooing was going to move him! I knew they had a cat but he has always avoided us until today, we had to be rescued by a member of staff! Hilarious!

Well as Lottie seems to be the self appointed chief rabbit poo taster of Herefordshire I decided to experiment with a muzzle on our walk this morning, Lottie's solution to this was to try and rub it off on the floor, by the end of the walk there was a piece of turf wedge in the top making her look like an environmentally friendly Rudolf out of season. Oh well back to the drawing board!

Well worming time was upon us and this time I decided to try putting the tablets into Brie (nothing but the best for Jed and Lottie). Well Lottie who inhales food decided that she didn't like Brie and Jed loved the Brie but not the tablet inside which he promptly left on the floor! So went back to plan B putting tablet down throat, clamping jaws together wrestle with wriggling greyhound on the floor, 5 minutes later one drooling mess of a greyhound has swallowed one tablet go back and repeat process.

Really sorry to say that I probably won't make it to the show this weekend. Lottie has managed to eat some fox poo and now has what can only be described as an 'explosive backend' and considering the fact that we have over an hours journey time I don't think it's a good idea. Jed has also decided to keep her company in the illness stakes by being sick so you can imagine the last 24 hours I have had!!! I am sure it will be a great success and I am really sad not to be going! I now have a large tube of pro-biotic to get down her and judging by the amount that got splattered all over my kitchen cupboards when I wrestled her to the ground to administer I am in for a fun weekend!

I didn't see the negative comments so can't comment about that, but just wanted to say I agree with Caro.
Orla was found as a street stray and had a big mammary tumour when she was caught.
I was told by the vet that it was because she was an older bitch that hadn't been spayed. She was a very lucky girl!!

As for Pyometras.....had a bitch with that and it was absolutely horrendous! That poor girl was not as lucky as Orla.

It is very sad when something happens, but we all know that EVERY op is a risk.

Once again, thinking of Coral's (foster) parents and all who love her ((xx))

Run free precious girl xxx

Please do not be put off by having dogs spayed in light of Corals tragic story as with any procedure there is always a risk, however the risk is very small and the benefits out way this. I worked in a veterinary practice for 11 years and saw numerous Pyometras which is an infection of the womb, which affects unspayed older dogs when the GA risk is therefore much higher, this condition is totally preventable with spaying but is life threatening, also neutered bitches have a lower risk from mamory tumours as well. This is in addition to preventing unwanted litters. It is terribly sad for Corals foster parents and negative comments really are unnecessary and extremely upsetting to all concerned those responsible should be ashamed of themselves.

Well after an eventful walk over the golf course this morning with what seemed like hundreds of hyper active rabbits! I have a few ideas for more classes at the next Snitterfield Fun Dog Show. Owners did you know that your greys could compete with the best dressage horse for the prancing walk, or how about the ministry of funny walks, most pointy ears and the best of all imitating the crab sideway gait. Lottie demonstrated all of these and I did have to smile. One slight issue you might need the assistance of said rabbits! Jed for the record couldn't be bothered!

Well it's been an interesting day I managed to keep Lottie's bandage dry with the use of a plastic drip bag, we coped with the heavy rain this morning and again at lunch time, just getting my lunch when Lottie who it has to be said is the messiest drinker spilt loads of water and before I could stop her walk straight through it getting said bandages wet! So removed soggy bandage, redressed, applied muzzle and made evening appt at vets again!! Now no bandage, wound covered in silver spray and dressings at the ready just in case!! Arrghhh!!!!

Poor Lottie,we hope she is recovering. Ele has suffered a similar injury recently and now poor Paddy has cut his leg having slipped on wet caravan steps. Biggest problem now is stopping them licking the injury site! We tried the cone of shame but found a sock together with a plastic bag for walkies was much better. worse than kids!! xx

Many thanks to Lorna who patched up Lottie after she damaged her dew claw pulling up on the fastest recall. We did end up at the vets and Lottie had her dew claw removed we tried to do it under local but to save both the vets and my ear drums decided it would be better to knock her out, she is now sporting a bright purple bandaged

Well as I have said before never a dull moment with these hounds, Usually it's Jed who's notorious for being accident prone but this time it's Lottie who was so intent on watching the signets that she walked straight into one of our traffics signs!! No injuries to report only a little hurt pride!

Poor Dottie Lottie has been attacked by a West Highland White nearly sank his teeth into her nose. My beautiful quietly confident Jed really growled and snarled at him and guess what the WHW backed off immediately don't know what Jed said!! Not sure if Jed was protecting me or Lottie or in fact both!! Jed is no pushover.

Have a chat with Ruth she put me in contact with her friend Joyce who has done a lot of the Tony Knight training. Basically Joyce taught me that I control the walk so if Lottie sees something that makes her pull I stop and change direction with no voice commands and only resume the direction when the lead has gone completely slack again. It does mean initially you do a lot of circling! Joyce was brilliant I would talk to Ruth or Joyce as this technique is very new to me I am very much in the learning stage myself however I have seen a real improvement with Lottie. Rabbits and squirrels will always be a trigger but it's much more manageable now and I only usually get pointy ears when she sees one instead of a full out launch.

Hi Caro. Just wondered which technique you used with Lottie. Milly is a nightmare if we see a cat/squirrel/rabbit and would like to calm her down.

by Caro

Tuesday 16 Jun 07:13

Well it's just over a week since Joyce's visit and Lottie continues to improve, the rabbits on park will always be a challenge (they disappeared completely when Joyce came!!!) but most of the time we get by them with pointy ears only and no launching. Lottie is so much more relaxed on walks now and will even happily leave the house behind me instead of dragging me through the door. At the risk of increasing Joyce's work load I would seriously recommend this training.
None of this training has involved any raised voices or actually treats, it's just bringing the pack mentality back, a language all our dogs understand.

Lottie now an absolute joy to walk after Joyce's 10 minute training, she is so relaxed now we even walked passed a rabbit this evening with only pointy ears and no launching. Jed has decided that when I have to change direction to 'reset' Lottie he will just stand still and we rotate round him, clever dog!

Well my vet assured me that the new flea treatment tablet Brefecto was highly palatable! Lottie who is quite happy to attempt eating three week old road kill decided she didn't like it, according to the leaflet you are not allowed to break the tablet, so battle commenced this morning. Eventually one soggy, salivating mess of a greyhound later said tablet was swallowed. I am thinking of volunteering Lottie to the drug company as chief taster!!!!

Well good news it looks as though Lottie has remembered her training, went out for a walk with a friend of mine and her very boisterous Boston Terrier who thought it would be good fun to launch himself at Lottie's face and she never reacted once huge relief really really proud of her. I think my friend however could do with teaching her dog a few manners!

Hi Wendy,I always think you can take the greyhound from the track but you cant take the track from the greyhound. The chase instinct is always there but with training they will eventually realise other dogs are not the hare and are just dogs like them.Don't let this incident get you down, after all if I as a stranger came running straight at you you would be scared at my intentions and react defensively. Lottie and Jed have done the same.Keep up the good work xx

For the last eight weeks I have been carefully introducing Lottie to small furries with great success until this evening when one irresponsible small furrie owner let her dog run full tilt towards Jed and Lottie, even the ultra calm Jed switched the prey drive on! All my hard work has probably gone down the tubes and I will back where I started. I even think Lottie managed to nip the dog as it yelped! The owner had two other small dogs which she picked up as they were in her words "not friendly"! Really worried now how Lottie is going to react the next time!

We are pleased that Lottie is walking better with a harness, will save your arms and the rabbits! Are your arms a few inches longer now he he! Paddy was a bit wayward on the lead until he had a harness. As for Ele she jumped her lead in Cheddar Gorge. We had only had her a few weeks and she ran off down the road.Fortunately traffic was light and a man caught her for us! Having scared us to death a harness was then bought double quick! xx

I am going to monitor them for awhile and see if they settle my priority has to be Jed it's his home first and foremost. Since Saturday there have been no more incidents Jed I think is quietly making his point, he was lay on Lottie's bed this evening and she accepted this and lay down on the rug by the side of him. Every now and then one of our two will turn over and wake the other or one will walk across the other,I dont think there is a faster way of being woken up then a greyhound barking at the other. They also have words if we go out and leave them we get to the bottom of the drive and can hear them, I think it is Archive putting Breeze in her place. He is in charge Breeze is happy to follow along until they are given Kongs, bones or any other treat then she gets bit stroppy, I would never leave them together alone with anything. Saying that while Breeze has been in and out of the vets and been having treatment on her tail if she has cried out Archive has put himself in front of her. Muzzles are really useful even if it just relaxes you a bit which in turn will relax the dogs. Xxx

Just to echo what everyone has said my experience was very similar with Bertie and Blade, having Charlie as an only dog for 13 years when sady he passed away, we adopted Bertie, we were happy still with one dog until Blade came into the kennels under very sad circumstances , we ended up fostering and it soon became permanent.... however my heart went out to Bertie I felt so guilty every time I cuddled Blade almost to the point that I did it without Bertie seeing ( seems hilarious now ) Bertie did except Blade straight away but would growl if Blade came to near whilst he was on his bed or if he was startled or stepped on whilst sleeping....it totally floored me as I had NO experience of having two dogs ( Blade is also quite a nervous dog and becomes snappy if scared ) again a totally new experience for me.... its now a well over a year since Blade arrived and although they are not lovey dovey over each other they get on fabulously they are like an old married couple and really don't like to be apart at all, the experience of two for me is amazing its the best thing I ever did !! hang on in there its worth it in the end !!

I hope your situation improves. From our experience of having a boy & girl our girl is the boss (so she thinks!). But she knows we are the boss of her. We have a very sensitive laid back boy who could have been dominated very easily so we had to make sure she knew who was here first. Ours are very good together now but are not a cuddly pair together as they both like their own space although they like to know the other one is close by. We used muzzles for a long time with our two (about 6 weeks) but this I think helped in them learning each other boundaries & our expectations in a safe environment. There is no jealousy between our two & we can even leave them close to each other eating a raw bone. Rolo was a little withdrawn at first but we made sure we showed him he was loved & important to us just as he was before. He will still find a corner to hide in when Star decides to have her racetrack impression through the house at times. He is happy to spectate but doesn't want to join in with her. He has his playtime whilst we prepare their food as he knows she will be waiting & watching at the kitchen door. They will find their own place in the pack I'm sure.

Hi Wendy, sorry to hear you have had a problem with Lottie, we are sure you have had lots of good advice from Ruth.We will see you tomorrow on the walk but your situation reminds us of when we first had Ele with our first grey Don. Ele was dominant and tried to become top dog.She kept pushing Don off the beds and not letting him rest or play with any toys! With help we soon stopped this and taught her she must learn to share and that we are top dog not her.It was worth the effort and Ele became the most gentle and loving girl once she found her place in the pack. She's even more loving now with Paddy! See you tomorrow and we can have a chat.Best wishes Alan & Pam xx

Hi Caro, sorry to hear Jed and Lottie had a grumble with each other today. It can be rather scary when things like this happen. It is still early days but hopefully they will settle down. My two do not share beds, mainly because Twiggy likes her own space and doesn't want to share it. After being told off by her a couple of times Skip respects this and is quite happy to keep to his own bed or dive on the sofa when she gets off! They have sorted things out between them. Xxx

We have hit a bit of a blip, both Jed and Lottie were on the same bed and I think someone got trod on and they went for each other which was really quite shocking. I managed to separate them both and no injuries however it has knocked my confidence a bit to say the least. I have had a reassuring telephone conversation with Ruth and I am monitoring the situation, also had a bit of an issue getting Lottie out of the car this afternoon she didn't want to get out and had a little go at me when I tried to make her! I think she is just testing her boundaries! Really hope things settle down, if anyone has advice I would welcome it. I am still coming to the walk tomorrow but will probably now muzzle them on the car journey just in case.

Hi Caro, don't be sad for Jed, it's probably his way of welcoming Lottie into his home. When Brae arrived here a few weeks ago, Rosie took a step back and allowed our new addition on "her" sofa (whilst she lay on the floor quilt), "her" bed and watched as she played with and then destroyed "her" toys; but over the last couple of weeks, Rosie has put her foot down (without any squabbling) and Brae has learnt to share. More often than not, they snuggle up together on the sofa, play with toys at the same time, eat from the same dual feeding stand and roam around the garden in unison. Give it a little while and once they've got used to each others ways, I'm sure they'll start sharing favourite places. The fact that he's still eating well suggests he's not unhappy. Give him an extra snuggle from us. Hope this helps, Tash & John xx

Hi Alan and Pam

Edwina or should I say Lottie is doing very well, clean in the house, eating well and good at night. Jed is being very good no growls just a bit of a miffed face now and again particularly when she snuggles up to him on the cushion in the lounge and proceeds to some how get the biggest portion of it. The only issue which I am having to work on is her reaction to all the rabbits on the park, she tends to try and launch and she is one stong lady, my arm muscles are developing nicely! Lottie has been for a pamper at the local dog groomers and is going for a check at my vets tomorrow, she needs to gain some weight. So at the moment she is doing well.

She is a large girl, so happy but gentle and very chilled out. She is happily wandering around with my greys and although there are multiple beds available, she is laying on a mat in the doorway! She keeps being sick which is more than likely due to the anaesthetic so she will stop here until she is better x She had a very quiet night and has done all her toileting outside :-)
