Billy

male, 19 years old, Blue and White

Added by DaybreaksRuth

Updated: Monday 01 Jan

Billy, as named by his trainer, is a very strong boy on the lead and will need to go to owners who are experienced with dogs.

His trainer says he is very head strong and will take a lot of work to make him the perfect pet but it will be worth it!

Billy has had 0 cuddles today (13 all together).
If you register or login, you can give him a cuddle too!

I have just spoken to Nes and sadly the brave decision was made to let him go in the early hours. It appears he had an embolism which paralysed him and he was struggling to breathe.
I am so grateful to Nes and Dave for giving Billy the most wonderful two years of his life. He was a difficult boy to start with but they stuck by him and gave him unconditional love. I am so upset for them - run free special boy xxxx

Hope Billy has recovered from the fitting, if Epilepsy is diagnosed check out the Phyllis Croft Foundation for Canine Epilepsy (PCFCE) on the web which is apparently very good.
Good luck and best wishes. Julie.

I have just had an awful phone call from Billy's owner - they have just got back from a walk and Billy has started fitting and is not well. I have advised them to get him to the emergency vets and I am awaiting news. I am so worried and am keeping my fingers crossed x

Hi Ruth

just a quick update on Billy. We have registered with a new vet. The vet recognised Bill as he is the vet for perry Barr. he said he often asked his trainer Kirsty Turner about Billy and where he was now
I'm pleased to tell you Ruth that Billy has turned into a wonderful pet with lots of character and is a gentle giant. we took him in as he is a very big boy and you said that this made it difficult to re-home him. well i'm so glad we did, we fell in love with him the minute we saw him and love him more everyday. He is just the best!!
If anyone is any doubt about owning a greyhound just do it, you wont be dissappointed.

Hi Emma

Nice to hear that you have a contact with good rates for greyhound owners. Although we have paid a lot of money for our Karndean flooring it has been worth every penny! It means Billy can now walk confidently around his home and our house no longer looks like Ali Babar's' carpet shop with all the mats everywhere!
Well done Emma for getting a good deal for others. I would recommend it for those dogs who have difficulty with laminate flooring.

Kind regards
Nessy

Sorry to hijack Billy's page, but just a quick note on the Karndean front; a client of mine owns a carpet/flooring company and has said that he will offer very competitive rates to those who want Karndean non-slip flooring for their
greys. Just mention the RGT (or me!) and he'll get you a good deal. His name is Dave Treacy and he can be contacted on 07768 314490.

Hope this helps, and sorry it's a bit late for you Nessy! Em x

Hi Ruth
Glad to hear that Max is till doing well evn if he is is mre wobbley bless him. We have just been on the greyhound site and discovered that Billy is Nellies half uncle (uncle Bill!!). It's great that you can trace them on the site. I forgot to tell you that i donated £10 to Max's appeal. i wish it could be more. Billy seems a loy brighter today. He managed to get off to sofa twice today and has not lost his appetite so thst must be a good sign. Big hug for Max. Keep up the good work Ruth. you do a fantastic job.
see you soon

Hi Vanessa, great to hear from you and sorry to hear about Billy's poorly paw! Sending lots of love......
It is so great to hear he is so loved and has settled so well.
Hope to see you soon xxxx
ps Max (my big softy) is getting so very wobbly now so doesn't venture out much these days - I can remember when he was a bouncy monkey and was difficult to control in and out of the house! Long gone are those days :-(

Hi Ruth

Sorry we had to miss the last walk in the park. we could not make this one as Billy has a poorly paw. We noticed that he occasionally limps but quickly recovers without much fuss. We took him to the vet's on saturday and were told that he had badly bruised the bone with soft tissue damage and was prescribed NSAID's. I bandaged his paw with a support bandage and he hopped along and seemed fine in himself. i took the bandage off on monday night just to check all was well and noticed the swelling had moved higher to his elbow joint so we decided to keep the bandage off. Big mistake as by the next morning his lovely paw looked more like a pigs' trotter. it was huge!!! i phoned the vets who reassured me and told me to re-apply the compression bandage. As you can imagine it was hard for him to cock his leg and balance on two legs when going to the toilet so consequently he ended up with a wet bandage. this time we noticed some blood so was straight on the prone to the vet again. As we suspected his paw was infected and antibiotics prescribed. iv'e been bathing it in hibiscrub and paracetamol as he had a high temperature. he is looking really sorry for himself but is milking it as he has taken over the sofa and enjoying even more fuss than normal.
Generally he is such a happy chappy at home still. there was a time when we thought he may take over as top dog but Nellie has soon put a stop to that and every now and again puts him staright back in line. he knows his place with such a dominant female. he still gets lots a of admirers but only from humans, dogs are usually scared of him as he dislikes other breeds other than his mates the greyhounds. he loves his food and walks. he walks round the village like a gangster! his coat looks like like leather at night and he walks so proud you would not mess with him. BUT we know the real billy and he is the most loving big softie that we all love so much. we have almost solved the problem with him slippng on the laminate flooring. we have had Karndean flooring installed (posh lino which is put down in strips to replicate wooden flooring). It's ant-slip just for Billy Boy. he is much better but occasionally slips when he goes too fast.
We hope all is well with you Ruth and Max is still doing well. We hope to catch up with you soon.
Lots of love
Vanessa, Dave Jake Billy and Nellie

We would like to thank the previous owners for thier comments. it was lovely to get some back ground information on him. He is usually really happy and has made us really happy too! He is very funny and makes us laugh. he is such a big character and i think he will be an eternal puppy even though he is 5 now.

Hi Vannessa and Dave four of us bought Billy when he was a pup.We are really pleased he has found a loving home.We had a lot of pleasure with him when he was racing we used to walk him every week.He was always very boistrous and a bit of a bully in the kennells. We always worried because of his size and stregnth he would struggle to find a good home.Although he was a hansome boy and everyone commented on this even the vet at the track said he was a fine specimen with beautiful eyes.We are really chuffed he has settled down and is making a good pet.All the best Roger Dave Dave and Brian.

Hi Vanessa and Dave, thanks for your comment.... I am SO happy this lad has been given a chance. Being so big and bouncy I thought he would be at the kennels for a while. I know it has been difficult but I admire you for giving him the support to settle. Love Ruth xxxx

Hi Ruth

The papers are all signed and it's now official Billie is our new dog! He joins Nellie our black bitch who we had from you 3 years ago. Billie has settled in well and gets on very well with Nellie and our son Jake. Everyone stops to say hello to him as he is such a friendly chap and they all comment on how handsome he is. The house is unrecognisable, what with all the mats everywhere (he doen't like the laminate flooring) he takes up a lot of room being such a big boy and has had a few toileting accidents but he is so worth the effort! He is such a lovely dog, we all love him to bits!!! He is such a big friendy boy who just wants to be loved. Anyone thinking owning a greyhound, just do it, it's so rewarding. Just beware if you definately don't want another dog then don't go back to Daybreak Kennels like us as you will definately go home with another one. We only visited to collect our Nellie after being kenneld there, we saw Billie and that was it, it was love at first site and we didn't even want another dog!!! So Beware they are addictive. I'm sure you will agree with me Ruth. How many have you got? Six isn't it? Only kidding.
We want to thank you Ruth for alll your good work, advise and support. see you soon.
Take care
Vanessa, Dave, Jake, Nellie and Billie

Ruth, I agree with you, I walked Billy on Sunday with my Blue and there was no problems. He is a very handsome boy. Don't judge him by his size, he may be a big boy but that doesn't mean he can't be gentle. Ruth give him a human hug from me. Hope he was a brave boy and gave blood yesterday. Keep up the good work.
