I love Saddle and Roy, they are gorgeous. I met Saddle again today and he socialised with Arlo, my lab. I am chuffed to say there was a massive improvement and that I he reacted positively to being around a strange, new dog.

Yes I think you are right to keep on walking, it worked for us with our Grey Dexter, who doesn't really like other dogs, we sought the advise of the fantastic Jim Greenwood as advised by Daybreaks, he told us to do the same, he said imagine if you are walking towards somebody and they slow down, you are then thinking why are they doing that, is there a problem?, and it's exactly the same for the dog, they think what's happening, do I need to react. Simple but when you think about it, it makes an awful lot of sense. Xxxx

I spent an hour in Elmdon Park with Saddle today. We walked past big and small dogs with no reaction. He had a really good look but didn't lunge or whine to get to them. I really think the key with him is to just walk past briskly and not give him a chance to get over excited about greeting another dog. We also sat for 5 minutes at the end of the walk but he did start getting a bit agitated then with dogs going past. Like I say, I think it is best to keep him moving . He was great once again getting in and out of the car. He's a lovely boy and with continued practice will get used to the big wide world.

Saddle came with me to the park for an hour today and I think there was an improvement since last week. He is still very stimulated when he sees other dogs running around but he managed to walk past five small dogs (who were stationary or walking calmly themselves) without reacting. He had a good look but didn't pull or lunge. He seems to cope better when you walk past briskly. Lots of people were interested in him and stopped me to ask about him . When we did stop, Saddle didn't really seem to know how to greet other dogs and can come across as a bit boisterous. However after that initial reaction, he doesn't pay the dog much attention. I think with time and patience he will cope more and more with the excitement of the big wide world. He also met lots of children today and was happy to receive fuss and attention.

Saddle was in Elmdon Park for about an hour this afternoon. Like others have said, he is certainly more reactive to small dogs than big ones. He didn't seem bothered by the latter at all. The anticipation of getting to a smaller dog is high but once he is there and has greeted them (albeit in an over excited way), he then just stands there looking round. I had the impression that once he'd met the dog he was so desperate to get to, he was ready to move into the next new thing. He really was on high alert the entire time although I would say that he did relax a bit more as the walked went on. Whilst he may find the real world a little overwhelming at the moment, I think lots of trips to the park will help desensitize him. On another note, he travelled well in the car and was happy jumping in/ out. He's a very handsome boy too! XX

Thanks to all who are working with them.
They are no worse than Maisie and Monty were when they came home. Look at them now, all sorts of doggie friends small and large, and Off lead too.
Just needs patience and reassurance and they will blossom into fun loving pets .

Roy and saddle had a fab day out to the park! Saddle is improving lots and he is now okay with larger dogs as we had many of those off lead come running up to us. We’re slowly working on the smaller breeds as these are the ones who excite him the most! We managed to walk past and have lots of other breeds walk past us with only saddle only looking at them but making no noise so there are slight improvements!

I’m sure with the help of volunteers this lovely lad will soon follow his brothers idea that we don’t have to get too anxious about other breeds and he can start making some doggy friends :) xx

I took Saddle to Elmdon Park yesterday to do lots of direction changes again to stop him pulling, and to give him more experience of being near other types of dog. He steadily improved through the time we were there, although still needs more practice. We met some large German Shepherds who were very loud and excitable and Saddle didn't bat an eyelid. He was more interested and reactive seeing smaller dogs and seemed anxious, but if we kept walking past them he coped much better, and we then stopped a few feet further on for me to gently stroke him and praise him, and he stood still for me and was much less reactive. He was definitely better with the other dogs than when I took him out with Roy 10 days ago, and he looked better today in photos that Jess took in the park today with Roy and a staffing sized dog. Onwards and upwards Saddle xx

Just reading all the comments on saddle and would like to add my two pence from my experience with the lovely lad. After walking him and his brother over elmdon Park we noticed a group of dog walkers with a wide range of dogs all shapes and sizes and we asked if we could introduce saddle and Roy to them! Roy was so calm and just enjoyed a sniff but saddle seemed to get over excited and very jumpy at the time it just seemed he was happy but very slightly confused to see them. He would bolt from one dog to another jumping and spinning giving my arms a very good work out but he wasn't aggressive or even showed signs of being anything other than a playful dog. I'm not sure what has been happening since there return as work has got in the way of greyhound fun but thought id add what I observed

Your great Rosie for working with them.
Yes with time and patience they will be fantastic.
Maisie and Monty both had strong prey drive. They are now off lead and have many doggy friends large and small. Squirrels however are another matter !!!!
Patience is what they need .

I took Roy and Saddle to Elmdon Park yesterday to try and reduce Saddle's reactivity. After 30 minutes of lots and lots of changing direction each time he pulled, he was happy walking past magpies, pigeons, ducks and geese. We met an Irish wolfhound and he was a little anxious initially but was then fine. He reacted strongly to seeing a Labrador, but has had no experience with other dogs and I think he would really improve with slowly being introduced to other types of dog. With time and patience, I'm sure he will settle xx

Such a shame and my heart goes out to the family. I'm sure it wasn't an easy decision to make, but the time the boys have spent in the home will have helped them learn and develop and will make it easier for whoever the boys finally live with. Big hugs to the brothers but also to the family who had to return them - don't let this put you off - there is a grey or 2 out there for you who will be right for you xx

Very sadly Roy and Saddle have been returned to the kennels today. Although in the home they have been very good and learnt a lot about having good manners, unfortunately when out and about they have proved to be a little too much for their owners to cope with and they feel as though someone with more experience with dogs would be able to help the boys adjust to life outside of the kennel environment. They are very upset to have had to make this decision and feel they have let them down. We are grateful to them for giving them a chance but we maybe need to reconsider what the boys need and what would be the best solution for them finding their forever home or homes would be. They are currently fast asleep and quite settled. Xxx

Further to my earlier comment, I have had a couple of negative comments about splitting the boys up. Since coming home with me, the boys are starting to spend more time separate when chilling and each of them slept separate sides of our bed last night. As I type, Roy is on the sofa and Saddle on the bed on the floor.
This separation will only be a trial to see how they get on. If they become distressed at any point, they will be straight back with each other.

So - the brothers, Roy and Saddle, who have never been separated since birth are still at the kennels waiting for their forever home. They arrived at the beginning of January and sadly went out overnight and were returned.

Taking on a dog, let along two is a big thing - especially financial. We have been trying to home the boys together and this is proving to be difficult. Therefore I have spoken to a volunteer who is willing to take one of the boys and I will have the other and see how they cope with being separated - although both will have the company of another dog - just not their brother. If this works, they hopefully will have a better chance of finding a home. If it doesn't - we know what we have got to keep trying to find for the boys.

I have had both boys at home with me - I cannot fault them at all.... they are already house trained, gentle and good around food, good on the lead, the list of positives is endless. If you would like more information on homing them as a pair or would like to meet them, please call the kennels on 0121 782 7702

Roy and Saddle are just adorable. They are litter brothers and have never been separated. I had them at home for a few nights to give them a break from the kennels and to see how they reacted to home life..... they could not be more perfect!!!! They were clean, settled and very easy to manage! Please give us a call if you would like to trial or foster to see if they would make a perfect family. They are gentle on the lead and just need each other...... Sadly they are not cat friendly.
