Well Finlay or rather "fat neck Finn" has gone up another notch on his collar! However he has started a healthy "diet" a couple of tablespoons of natural low fat unsweetend yoghurt with bio cultures, with some rasberry's, in the morning, a taste he acquired early on in our partnership when he stole my breakfast!!! As luck would have it all where OK'd by the vet.The bio's are also good for tummy problems. He goes mad as soon as I open the fridge, are you impressed? Don't be he follows it with his usual breakfast and half of Nina's if I don't stand on guard. lol Going to register him with our vet tomorrow so no doubt he and I will be in hot water when he is weighed, and NO chance of a biscuit off her for "being a good boy"" that's how he conned me !!! lol

Well Finn has been on his first visit to our holiday lodge in Bude and he was such a good boy, although he did nick Nina's favorite spot in front of the picture window which has a view over farmland to the sea.(It is a dog friendly site, but they have to be kept on leads but can let off steam in the fenced in paddock there.) Unfortunately the window has a path in front which is for the people who are in the half a dozen other lodges, so not a lot of passers by, but it seems Finn needed to "make shapes" when they did. Legs in the air everything on show. It did cause a lot of laughs and I think he would make a good center page in "Playdog" seems a natural. lol.

Well Finlay has gone up a hole on his collar and is now also known as Fat Neck Finlay! We nearly had an emergency at feeding time, he was hoovering his Burns dinner down so fast and had so much in his throat at one time he started choking. Now although I was a nurse I don't fancy doing a Heinrich maneuver on a Greyhound and so was relieved when after a rub of his throat he coughed it all up and then promptly eat it again ! It made Nina who was delicately eating hers jump and she coughed hers up as well, but no worries Finn rushed and ate up her regurgitation to. !!!
Oh come on it's not that bad, it saved me clearing up LOL

I agree with Ruth. What a sad few days, every time I hear of a Grey who has gone over Rainbow Bridge it brings back the sadness of the times we have had to let go of our own beautiful hounds, each of the 5 with their own lovely (sometimes quirky) personalities. So I thought I would remind us all of why we keep giving them their forever home despite the inevitable pain of loss, and try and lift the day a little, whilst sending love to the owners of the ones we have lost.
Finlay is now becoming labelled "Fat Ball Finlay" after stalking me round the garden with my bucket of fat balls for the young birds. If I put the bucket down for a moment he is like a stealth bomber creep in, grab, take off fast. The neighbours think it is hilarious, me in hot pursuit of a Greyhound (before he can eat it) with as much chance of success of catching him as a mouse playing football with an elephant. I feel I will soon be starting a new club OOOG Club
(Owner Of Obese Grey Hound). FAT FINLAY has a certain ring to it !!! don't you think LOL

Well Finlay is officially adopted, and we are are officially spectacularly FFPs. We all knew it would happen and nobody likes to fail, but for some strange reason I feel this is a great thing to fail at LOL. Fin would like to say a big thank you to Auntie Ruth for getting on her soapbox and pleading his case, the only thing he was a bit upset about was her saying it was partly his age that caused his long wait and being black, everyone knows black is beautiful and age is just a number (ask his new mom, she is 25 in her head, but not on her pension book !!!) . Anyway you did good Ruth and we are glad we fell for your plea. Finlay hopes you wrote into the adoption agreement that food was to be unlimited and on demand, if so his life is complete! When we got back home with him he jumped out of the car and stood on the front doorstep wagging his tail to be let in. He knew he was home for good. Bless him

Lovely to hear that the walk went well and the kennel hounds got a change of scenery and became just doggies out for a walk. Hope that the awful thunder and lightening storms are not upsetting them too much. Our Nina gets in a terrible state with them and fireworks to. No amount of Bach Flower drops even touch her panic so vet has given us some meds to keep in, which I was very grateful for. Poor girl cannot even think about her dinner. However Finlay said it will be no problem for him to help out by having her share as well.!!! and if anyone out there has the same trouble he could probably pop round to help you out as well.He is gently moving into pet mode now and when I call him over for a fuss and ear rub he no longer checks my hands out first to see if there is a treat in them.
He has realized that hands can give you a lovely calming feeling just by their contact that is as good as a treat, well almost ! lol
I wish I lived nearer to Daybreaks so I could help out but can I say thank you to all you guys who give up so much time to these lovely Greys' xx

Finlay (big tone) says a big thank you to all the lovely people who have sent him good wishes for his new life of leisure, however he says it would have been even more exciting if food had been involved in some way ! lol
This morning when he got up he had what I call a "race day" moment (based on my Izzy, now over rainbow bridge) he just took off running as soon as I let him out. Several laps of the garden later and a noise like thunder as he powered past me he ran up to me wagging his tail as if to say "that was my lap of honor to mark my official retirement and hopefully the start of the best times of my life., " !!!!!! x Thank you Ruth & guys at Daybreaks, will miss you (but I'll get over it, now where's my dinner.")

Well if I say Tony is now answering to the name Finlay (Fin) and a new bed has been ordered I think I can safely say we are on the list for a FFP tee shirt. My poor husband was just used to getting up at 8am (as Nina our other hound likes a lie in) and Fin the food monster comes into our lives and decides around 6am is a good time to start the day, Never had a Grey who is so fixated with food and I think I will have to ask Ruth for food stamps LOL At the moment his day is still spent looking for food finding food and eating food interspersed with destroying 6 squeaky toys (his second love). What can I say we fall for it every time, cause I am sure at some point we will become his first love, and it doesn't really matter because he has stolen our hearts.

Well I think I can safely say Tony is still "keen". Let him and Nina out to run down the big garden this morning and forgot the squirrel is usually around early. Well today he was sat in the middle of the lawn deciding which peanut holder to go for. Not for long! Both hounds saw him at the same time and "game on" He was in a dilemma as to which way to run cause now there where two Grey's not one. I thought for a moment I was at the track, after 2 laps around the lawn Tony and Nina looked like they where heading for a photo finish. Then the squirrel made a run for the neighbors fence
Luckily he made it and they put their breaks on.I had my heart in my mouth as they where frighteningly fast and I will squirrel check before they are let out in future.A neighbor who saw it all from her bedroom window asked for the odds for the next race. I would say EVENS LOL.

I just want to send loving thoughts to Ruth and Foxy. When Nina stayed with Ruth and I gave her the bag of goodies and a toy was in it Foxy went to the bag and surprise, surprise he took the toy! not the food. The flesh may be weak but his spirit is still young. Lets face it we are all 21 in our heads whatever age and Foxy has been such a special boy who overcame great odds to live a wonderful life with Ruth. I am sure he would love me to say to her "Thanks mum" Don't think my girl would have minded trading me in for her when I went to collect her. Ruth, you rock ! x

Well Since Tony arrived he has learnt a lot. He knows he has to join the breakfast and dinner que which forms at the same time each day, and that he cannot come into the kitchen while I prepare his and Nina's bowls. Lies and watches with anticipation, he knows he will be sent out if he crosses the line. lol Today he has decided to commence a toast que (when I am getting mine) ! I am trying to achieve that pitiful look in my eyes that hounds have whilst negotiating something with my hubby. Not working so far.

Well Tony has been making very good progress, transitioning from kennel mate to pet. It must be soooooooo hard for them .Even given how much love and attention the hounds receive from Ruth and her wonderful volunteers when they arrive at Daybreaks. He is now recognizing there is a routine and rules to be followed in the "food givers" house if he wants to be told he is a good boy. He has decided that is what I am, the God of food. However he knows now when he has had his food he has to get on his bed and chill for a while and that he doesn't have to constantly wander around looking for it. Before we go to bed he has a wee, a sausage with his older sister on his bed and then accepts the lights will go off and he goes to sleep after setting his alarm for around 7.30am. Better than a human baby for sleeping.!
It is easier to foster I think if you have another Grey as they do learn from them and he actually gave his sister a waggy tail and a kiss yesterday, and pays her a little respect (except for food and we are working on that LOL)
Come on, someone give Marty a chance to experience a new life so that he can find his forever home easier after fostering. P.S. Hope Ruth is soon feeling better. X

Love your words loveheart and i always say the same 'why do I keep having these animals when their departure leaves me broken hearted?' But then you think of all the joy and love they bring while you have them and the heartache is worth it! As previously said, jet is my first dog but already can't and don't want to imagine life work out him! I'm also cat mad and keep rehoming the mankiest, oldest things I can find which eventually do cause the heartache but are wonderful while we have them xxx

After learning that Bunny had passed over Rainbow Bridge yesterday it bought back many memories of our hounds who are waiting for us on the other side and I was sad all night and wondered why we keep re-homing which will eventually leave another hole in our hearts. Then this morning I remembered. Having been contemplating his breakfast since he opened his eyes this morning, food monster Tony had devoured his before Nina's bowl reached the stand, and was then devouring hers with his eyes as she ate! lol Now I have learnt that if I let him pick up any bits he has splashed on the kitchen floor I can get the whole floor tongue cleaned while he waits to see if she leaves even one burns pellet. However long or short a time our sweet hounds are with us we give them a wonderful happy life for as long as we can, in return they love us. make us smile, get us fit walking (well some of us) and brighten our lives on a dull day plus if your lucky keep the house clear of any dropped food and in my case clean the kitchen floor. "Come on Tony bathroom floor next"

Now here is a story to start the day. We had forgotten how bringing a new Grey into the fold changes your usual routine for a while. Our little girl Nina likes a walk before she or us have breakfast. So hubby slips on a pair of shorts and tee shirt and out of bed into the street almost. This morning Tony was with Nina at the bottom of the stairs ready for the off. So out they went.
20 mins later he was back. "That was quick I said" "I would have been longer" he said laughing but someone just told me I was still in my "Bart Simpson" pajamas !!! Fortunately the bottoms do not have an open fly or that could have been another story LOL. Tony what have you done to us !

Oh loveheart what a beautiful poem, I too am typing through the tears! I have only had one grey from daybreaks as jet is my first for but I can't begin to thank the daybreaks angels enough for letting us be the fortunate ones to take jet home. Hes truly amazing and brings us so much joy and along with his horse brother (jim) is my best friend! My husband knows where he is in the pecking order! So thank you daybreaks for giving us jet and keep up your fantastic work as all the hounds that have come through and are yet to come through, are truly blessed to have you by their side's fighting their corners xxx

I wrote this in 2010 dedicated to Ruth and all volunteers at Daybreaks RGT. I hope you all read it again, especially when you have a sad day and it's hard to cope.
It is titled
A story of love
What would we be without you?
You are our light in the darkness
When others forsake us you are there
Where would we go?
Who would love us enough to care?
You are there to ease our our pain
When we are frightened and alone
You calm our racing hearts.
If we are old or ill you will not desert us
You are with us at times when others find it too painful.
Even though your heart is breaking to, you are strong for us
And if "Rainbow Bridge" beckons
We know you will show us the way, as we sleep before the journey begins
You are our mother, our father, our friend, our salvation,
and we love you.
from all Greys everywhere

Thanks guys.

Well, talking of food monsters. The first Grey we had counter surfed in the kitchen on the second day and when we got home from a quick trip to the shops she had managed to get my newly made very alcoholic Xmas cake on to the floor and eat half of it. She seemed fine but we took her straight to the vet as we knew raisins etc where very toxic to dogs. The vet put her on a drip overnight and she was fine, think she was just disappointed that she couldn't finish the cake!!!!! Having had a dainty little girl grey for a while we had forgotten how some hounds are when they first find a home. Tony had his breakfast and I foolishly put my dish of raspberries, blueberry's and natural yoghurt on the table while I fetched my drink. Yes you've guessed I now know Tony loves fruit and yogurt LOL. The vet has assured me these fruits are full of antioxidants and not a problem for him. Maybe he's turning Veggie. More later when I have had MY breakfast

I have to say we have been spoilt because Nina will sleep till about 8.30am plus since she lost lovely Ollie. She let him take her squeaky off her (althought I gave it her back after I had wrestled him like an Anoconnda lol and will get him his own) Have to go as he has just taken a fat ball out of my basket while I was feeding the birds and run off to eat it, even thought he ate a hearty breakfast. Cannot fill him up. More later if I am back from the chase !!!!!!!!

We have a lovely black boy - he is greyer now ! We adopted Archive from the track as we knew his racing owner - so we would of he'd him if he was yellow with pink spots, after learning more about greyhounds and how hard homing black hounds is - when we decided to adopt another we decided that we would only adopt a black hound so Breeze joined us- one of the reasons we adopted Jato ? Yes because she is also black. They are all beautiful and we give them coconut oil in their breakfast and they have shiny coats. Xxx

I have had 9 greys over the years, 3 of which have been black. I can honestly say my choices were not based on colour, although all 3 were returnees, but all were and have been fantastic hounds. My first black boy was returned in a bad way and was staying with Ruth whilst he recouperated. He was fab and after a short time with love and tlc he had the most fantastic shiny black coat. Sadly I lost him at 11 and a half. Now I have Willow and Max both black and who each have their own special characters. Please dont't look over these fab hounds, no matter what colour they are make not only fab pets but fantastic soulmates. X

Ok, after reading Ruth's message, I'm going to put my little two penneth in! I am sure I am speaking on behalf of all black, male greyhound owners, potential owners out there please, please, please don't be put off by the colour black! All greyhounds are the most wonderful of creatures but for me the blacks are supreme! As I always say I am biased with my black boy but honestly his personality is second to none, he's the most loving, loyal boy I could wish for and stunning with his 'black' shiny coat...who couldn't fall in love? I wish I could let potential new owners spend time with him and then they would understand what a best friend they could be gaining. My heart goes out to Tony as he is such a beaut and just needs that chance that they all do. Come on people help these black boys out and in turn there are so many more that could then benefit from the wonders that daybreaks do! Ok, I'll get off my soap box too now, but hope that's helped lol xxx

So Tony is still at Daybreaks, over three months after arriving here. Why I ask? Easy I guess..... firstly he is male - the boys are much harder to home than the girls.

Secondly he is black - the pretty colours go much quicker such as fawns, blues and brindles.

Thirdly - he hasn't got age on his side as he has just turned 6.

Finally - he hasn't got a sad story attached to him. He is not a stray, been mistreated, rescued from abroad or had any sort of ill treatment we dread to hear about - he is just a product of the racing industry.

People fall for those who have had a terrible time - it is only human but for Tony he has had none of this thankfully.

The sad fact is he is just another one on our worry list of trying to find a home for. We have sleepless nights from daily calls from people who have had dogs that can no longer keep them and we have to turn them away as we are full to our capacity at the moment. We have the pressure of over 60 dogs on a waiting list waiting for a space here too. Stepping off my soap box now - sorry..... :-((((

Tony met a husky called Pixie and a very boisterous 1 year old labrador called Arlo today and he was an absolute star with both of them! He's such a friendly boy :) xx

“Big Tone” isn’t actually that big but he is a really terrific hound. Julie met him for the first time on Tuesday and was smitten too!
I hope that Angie’s screensaver strategy works for this special hound soon.

Mutbags, Tony is a really super boy. He is just not good at selling himself to a prospective new family. He is a laid back, friendly lad who pairs up well with the girlies! :)) Bless him. Xxx

Had to give Tony my cuddle as love the pic with the slight head tilt. Perhaps I could give you all a cuddle on Sunday when I might be popping with Sue (Stan & Gemma's female human). Axx

Until to day I haven't walked Tony for a while. He is brilliant, one super laid back hound who walks really well, no pulling at all. Waits beautifully. To spend some time with him is a privilege. Lovely lovely boy xx

I spent a lovely 10 minutes with Tony in his kennel today. He ended up lying with his head in my lap enjoying the fuss. What a splendid hound he is.

Another gorgeous boy we met today. I don't know how you volunteers and workers do it you must have your heart's melted every day but thank goodness there pooches have you. It was the first time my mom and aunty have been and couldn't get over how clean, tidy and comfortable all the kennels were which is testament to you all xxx

Tony and Jack came out for a walk with me this afternoon. On our way back to DB we walked straight into the worst blizzard which I have experienced in this country. Both were as good as gold.
Fellow volunteers who know Adam will be surprised to hear that I actually saw him flinch at the severity of the weather. Adam has a legendary reputation for walking hounds in the freezing conditions while only wearing a t-shirt. Today was so bad that even he was relieved to get back to our kitchen sanctuary.

I took this super, big lad out for a walk today. He loves being out and he is such a friendly soul who loves all the attention that he can get. Although he's a big boy he is gentle on the lead.

Second time with Big Tone today. He decided that he only wanted to walk on the lighter shade of tarmac today so we weaved our way up and down Damson Lane avoiding all the dark bits! Whoever adopts Tony will have a real character - I like him a lot.
