Very pleased with Charlie. We took him to our local again last night - his second visit. When we took him the previous time, there were no other dogs in and only a few people, as we went in with him at a time we'd hoped would be quiet and it was.
Last night, we knew friends of ours were there - two couples - and the one couple's two dogs. To be fair, the one dog was the female golden doodle he'd had a walk with two weeks ago.
We got to the pub and he ended up in a central area with them all. He was good to the dog he'd walked with, ignored the other that can be a bit grumbly, and then went up to start meeting the people, as he'd only met one of them before. He accepted fuss from all happily (and scratchings too).
He was a bit distracted by people coming in and out of the pub, but he was quiet. He didn't settle that quickly so I eventually put a blanket down on the carpet for him and he settled.
We stayed later than our friends and after they left, someone came in with a long haired terrier on an extending lead that wanted to say hello. I was a bit uncertain but cautiously let him say hello. The dog was wagging everything going and Charlie sniffed, put up with the enthusiasm and wagged his own tail in a friendly way too. Not long after that, someone else came in that we know with a female Bichon Frisse. We had been worried about these two meeting but she's a strong character. They stared at each other and after a few seconds, Charlie started backing away. Positions changed and they stared again. Charlie again backed away. They then ended up at a table behind him. When the Bichon Frisse sat near me, as she likes fuss from me too, Charlie sat down on his blanket the other side by me too, but he wouldn't face towards her. I think he'd been truly put in his place. It reminded me of how Kylie used to throw our Ben off the sofa, just by looking at him, even though he was 10kg heavier.
Charlie walked there and back happily (a mile each way) and only got up overnight at 5am for a wee, then was ok til I got up around 6:15.
He didn't put a paw wrong to be honest and everyone was saying what a lovely boy he is.

We've just got Charlie back home as a fully fledged member of the family.
We took him for a walk towards the airport flyover before we went so he could toilet. And then we got wet on the way back so had to pop him in for a towel dry, which I think confused him a bit. He stayed lying down in the boot the whole hour drive back.
We're glad we gave Charlie the chance to see if he could settle with us as he's a gorgeous boy, very easy to feed, has enjoyed every walk so far and likes his people. He's going on his holibobs with us next month and we're hopefully taking him to our local tomorrow evening - weather dependant!
He's still getting up at greyhound kennels time, but 5:30 this morning, so he's getting later.
So glad he's now one of the family as he's filled the void left by little Kylie (and Lucy and Ben).
Thanks Ruth also for your support when we've needed advice over the years for Lucy and Ben, who weren't even Perry Barr dogs. All the best x

Charlie has been with us a week now. He's still shadowing us a bit, but has been left alone for various amounts of time, and even when for a few hours, everything seems ok when we come back. The night before last, he slept all the way through without a peep, until 5:45am. Last night, he started off ok but woke me up around 2am. I put him outside and, to be fair, he did have a wee, then was quiet until around 5:15am. I think he's definitely still on racing kennels breakfast times.
Yesterday, I arranged a doggy date for Charlie with one of our friend's dogs, an older female golden doodle. They met ok and we went for an on-lead walk together, which Charlie behaved for. Today, he met a male saluki cross, a few years older than him, and again, he was fine. We've seen a couple of small dogs over the past few days - I worried slightly when a fluffball of a white Pomeranian came towards us - but so far, he hasn't lunged at any of them. He also met a black Labrador and a white and tan spaniel a couple of days ago and was ok with them too.
He's still enjoying his food, and after I made the crate in our front room look more inviting, he's taken to going to bed in there at night (the door is always open).
He's also swiped some of my decaff coffee and tried to have Andy's the next night. He looked at my cup of tea earlier too.
We've still not experienced a moving cat. We've passed two, but they were still.
He's a very lovely boy. We just need him to settle that bit more, but he's had a few changes from racing kennels, to Daybreaks, to castration, then coming home with us, all in less than a month.

Charlie seems to be calming down a little in the house now. He's still a bit of a shadow, but he is improving. While we were working in the front garden and he was left inside yesterday, he got fairly vocal, to the point a neighbour asked if he was ok, but we've popped out a few times for various reasons, especially today, and he's quiet when we're back, so I'm hoping that yesterday he was just objecting to not being involved. He loves his food and has been wagging his tail before his walks. He hasn't seen a cat yet. That's going to be interesting I think, but none of our previous four have been cat friendly either, so nothing new. He seems to be fitting in well. We just need to get him to sleep through, realise greyhound kennel breakfast time isn't the same as ours and cut the apron strings some more. Staying that, he's improved and he's only been here four days. He's a gorgeous lad.

We went for a look in the kennels this morning, as we're missing having a greyhound, and Ruth brought Charlie to our attention. Anyway, he was brought out to us by Norman after his walk and he worked the charm offensive on us and he's home on foster to see how he gets on.
He is a bit clingy but it's early days and it didn't help that I had to go out to work an hour after he got back. We were sorting some paperwork out upstairs not long ago and he lay on a mat in the hallway waiting for us to come down but he was quiet. Andy was here this afternoon and says he did settle after a while after I'd gone out and at one stage was lying on his bed with his legs up in the air. We'd hoped to walk him when I got back but we had a mini-monsoon for an hour so he just made do with the back garden.
Andy fed him without any problems, he's been clean - so far - and been out for both functions. We took biggest part of an hour to get home with him because we got stuck in traffic on the motorway and apart from one brief get up, he travelled lying down and without any fuss in the boot.
He seems to be quite a bright boy and takes his treats gently, especially considering he clearly loves his food.
Hopefully, he can get past his understandable uncertainty in a new environment and settle over the next few days.

So sad for Charlie that his reservation has fallen through, he really doesn't like being cooped up in a kennel. However, he did have a lovely time this morning on a playdate with the pretty Hollie, a regular sand run visitor who likes to have a companion to play with in the run.

After careful introductions, they played beautifully together in the run - and Charlie showed us his love of playing with tennis balls. Such sweet boy, fingers crossed he doesn't have to wait too long for another chance. x

Sadly Charlie has been unreserved:-(

He is such a loving boy but sadly very stressed in his kennel. If you think you could offer a home or foster him I’d be so grateful.
