Joe was a very special lad and an integral part of Daybreaks. He was often at the kennels and loved nothing more than to snuggle in a bed in the office. Over the years he has been great with every Greyhound Ruth took home and that's a lot! :) He loved his routine and made us smile when Ruth used to say he lived in Joe-Joe Land Xx He had to put up with a lot of health issues over the years but he loved his life; but more than anything he loved his Mommy. Xx Sending lots of love to Ruth, Andy and Foxy. God Bless your beautiful Joesph. Fit and well again and having fun at Rainbow Bridge. :)

Sending you massive 'thought cuddles' Joe. We have all our fingers and paws crossed here that you are soon much much better... Ruth, I know you'll have gone through all this anyway, but has Joe eaten anything different to your other greys? Could it be a reaction to an insect bite? Such a worrying time and we're thinking of You & Rob. xxx

Joe-Joe has been under the weather again.... his throat swelled massively during the early hours of Tuesday and I took him to the vets later that morning - he had a heart rate of 180 and a temperature of 39.8.

He had an injection of antibiotics and diazepam but he was no better by the afternoon with his temperature hitting 40.2. He was admitted and put on a drip and kept in overnight.

I collected him late yesterday afternoon as his temperature had started to drop. He is very quiet today and very purple down his front and legs (see photo)!! :-( If only we knew what caused his throat to swell :-(

Poor Joe is going through the wars still with his toe. Since he had his operation on 14th April he has not been good at all... he is on even more antibiotics and when he is reviewed this coming Saturday, if it is still as swollen and inflamed he will undergo surgery that day to remove his toe. I am not only gutted for him but we were due to go to Cornwall for our holiday early hours on Saturday :-( Keep your fingers crossed he starts to improve xxxxxxxxx

Thanks for all your kind messages and also texts - sorry - since cracking the screen on my mobile I have had to use an old mobile that has no numbers stored on it so I am sorry if I have not replied yet! We picked Joe up yesterday from Moseley where he has had half of his pad debrided as the tissue had no blood supply to it. Poor Joe does not do well because of his throat but he made it through but is certainly letting me know he is very upset about everything! I have been up all night consoling him.... thank goodness I am at home today doing paperwork..... bring on the coffee!

Poor Joseph - I took him to the vets again yesterday - he is still limping with his bad toe. When he was admitted before to have it explored, it was felt it was looking much better so nothing more was done. However it is more inflamed so is off tomorrow morning to Fivelands Moseley unfortunately for a GA this time :-( with the worries about his throat I am going to be beside myself but I know he is in the extremely capable hands of Chris......

He comes up the kennels with me quite often and everyone is used to his lumpy neck, quirky head movements and twitches and they don't seem to cause him any distress. Joe is half-brother to my Dennis having the Larkhill Jo blood in them. Dogs live in the moment (Cesar Millan, The Dog Whisperer), with love and care surrounding Joe, everyday is heaven for him! X

Ruth and Rob, you are brilliant and very brave. Joe is such a gorgeous boy - we would have loved to have him if he had passed his cat test. We've been following his progress and feeling very sad, but he is the best possible place. Give him a big cuddle from all of us.

We were fortunate enough to meet Joe when we picked up Ottie a.k.a 'Honey', my 8 year old son fell in love with him but Ruth told us he was not up for rehoming because he was awaiting test results. Since reading the sad news a lot of tears have been shed in our house as we lost our other dog with cancer last year & we know what a difficult time it is for everyone. Our thoughts & prayers are with Joe, Ruth & Rob, it is wonderful that Joe is surrounded by so much TLC right now. Wishing you strength for the days ahead, you are all in our thoughts, Tracey,Michael, Rachel & David & not forgetting our beautiful greys Rebel & Honey xxxxxx

Dear Ruth and Rob just seen the bad news which I suppose we expected but hoped we were wrong.
Joe is blessed to have found his way to you both.
Its not the length of a life sometimes that counts, but the width.
And I know that Joe will have all the love and care to make his very wide in however long he has left.
God Bless you and your sweet boy xxx

I have been reading about Joe and just want to say that it is such a sad situation for him, he does look a lovely greyhound. At least he is being looked after now but also such a shame that he cannot be rehomed, it is upsetting to read when any animal is poorly.

Sending best wishes.

Thank you Ruth and Robbie for looking after Toby's little brother, i am reading this with tears in my eyes as i feel it's not fair sometimes that these beautiful dogs just don't get a proper life and then when they can get a chance by coming to Daybreaks something like this happens. Jojo as i call him will have the best ever time of his life in your care surrounded by all your wonderful greys. you both are an inspiration. Ina xxxx

Our vet spoke to a neurologist today at Willows and discussed the video footage we had shown him, as well as his thyroid levels, his lump in his throat and behaviour etc.

The neurologist confirmed also what we have already been told that we can only be dealing with a brain tumour (which is probably a secondary to the lump in his throat). This could only be confirmed by an MRI scan which would cost nearly £2000 which the Trust cannot afford however both the specialist and our vet say there is no doubt what we are dealing with so an MRI would be a waste of time and money.

We cannot let this boy just slip away yet so Rob and I have decided to keep him - he is no trouble at our house and we will know when the time is right....... we didn't want to get too attached to him knowing what we could be facing, but equally we couldn't turn our backs on him either.

We had the results this morning of the fine needle aspiration of the lump in his neck and they were unfortunately inconclusive. On speaking to the vet at length there are only two possible causes for his behaviour: 1. Epilepsy or 2. a brain tumour. Both deem him unhomeable unfortunately. A tough decision has therefore got to be made at some point. My heart is already broken after losing Annie on Tuesday, this is not something I can deal with just yet. I will keep you posted...........

Joe is going to go for a needle biopsy of the lump in his throat next week. We showed the video of him to the vet with his strange behaviour and the vet thinks it could be a form of epilepsy or worst case senario - a brain tumour. He is a happy boy though - house trained and has slotted into home life really well....... will keep you posted as to his results as until we know what is happening healthwise with him, we can not offer him for adoption.

Hope this lovely lad is getting better. he has got the best carers possible with ruth and rob.
I nearly didn't have a turkey dinner today because as I walked into the kitchen with it on a plate ready for the oven Cara ( Pearl as was) saw me jumped up grabbed the skin around the neck and we had a tug of war across the kitchen, a case of 2 determined woman neither going to give in!!!. Thankfully I won, and she has sulked all day!!! lol.
Wishing all the volunteers who have worked over Christmas with the Greys a very happy New Year. YOU ARE GREAT! XXX

The vets cancelled Joe's op today as they deemed him too unwell to have an anaesthetic. He has been started on antibiotics etc and we are awaiting blood results. His gums are so pale and he has many ulcers in his mouth as well as the swelling in his throat. I will keep you posted...... He has settled in well here and is enjoying the comforts of home life.

Sending lots of positive thoughts Jo's way for today. Me and Buddy met him last week, he is gorgeous, very sweet (can't persuade hubby that 1 more grey wouldn't take up that much room, sadly, or there would be a warm fire for him here) Lots of love to Jo today x

Sunday 20 Dec 21:09

I took Joe to the vets on Friday as he had a swelling. They have found a lump in his throat which is going to be operated on tomorrow (Monday). It is by his trachea so it will be a tricky operation and also hoping that the lump is not cancerous when the histology is returned. I have brought him home with me tonight to give him lots of cuddles. He has settled really well and seems to be enjoying home comforts! Big fingers crossed that all goes well for him tomorrow. I will keep you posted. He is a beautiful and wonderful grey.

he is breaking my heart, i so want to find him a home as i simply cannot have him, he is such a loving beautiful boy and i can't understand why he has not been chosen. he is not pushy at all and does not bounce around to make his presence felt could that be why he is being overlooked. he walks like a dream and is the softest most adorable hound so hopefully someone will see him for the stunner he is and take him home before long. xxx
