Thanks to you all for your comments, I know you have all been through the same. Tara is crying a bit but mainly pacing and looking for Suzie and it is very upsetting to see but I know she will adapt like us. XX

So very sad to read this news. Thinking of you Nes and David. We know as do so many others how hard it is when we lose our old friends and how they leave a huge hole in our homes and in our hearts. She had a lovely retirement with you and was so loved. Run free Suzy Bluebell. Much love from Linda, Paul, Lena and Peggy xx

I am heartbroken to hear that Suzie gained her angel wings yesterday. The biggest of hugs go to my friends who have given her a wonderful life and I am sure memories of her will stay in their hearts forever.

Suzie's owners have a full 40mg bottle of Urilin and if anyone is interested in it for their dog who is already being prescribed it, please contact the kennels on 0121 782 7702.

Hi Nes, Kate has the box of food just so you know, I hope it is useful. If she does seem to be losing her appetite, and stops eating the kidney diet, please get in touch and talk to me as this is what happened with Evi and it wasn't the end, far from it, she actually regained nearly 2 kilos on the home cooked diet we put her on! All the best xx

Our Suzie is doing great, but she is still coughing and sounds a bit hoarse. Sadly it will get worse, but we will take every day as it comes. Kidney wise, she will have another blood test in another month or so to check how her diet is working out. Bless her!

Oh, Cinders please don't worry, she is on Royal canin at the moment so she can wait! We live just the other side of Beoley, so we will collect it from Daybreaks or Ruth and Robs as soon as we can. When we collect it there will be a cheque to give Ruthie for Daybreaks. Did she mention how Roxy is doing? Many thanks again XX

Oh Nes, I am so sorry, we took the kidney stuff to Bablake today where Ruth was doing the event, but in the chaos of the cake sale, we have driven it back home again without giving it to Ruth, we just found it! We are heading to Solihull on the weekend and I PROMISE we will drop it off then! Unless you are in the Kenilworth / Warwick Leamington area in which case we could bring it directly to you perhaps? If not, we will drop it off Sat or Sun, without fail. I have included some tins and a tray of renal food, some kidney supplements and some low phosphorous treats suitable for kidney patients. I'm so sorry for being so scatty!!

I am concerned that Suzie is going to loose weight but apparently on Royal Canin she shouldn't. I have started her on the food and she will eat it, phew! I will keep you posted - thanks again. xx

You are very welcome Nes...anytime. It's horrible when they are ill...our friends dog just got skinny very quickly and then stopped eating, they said that was her kidneys. I think if they are diagnosed early, then you can help them a bit more. Renal supplements are definitely a good idea. Take care, and keep us posted. I will ask my friend for more info and get back to you as well. Sending cuddles Suzies way. Can you get her to eat anything? Xxx

Friday 19 Feb 22:21

Oh we wouldn't dream of taking a penny for it! We can't do any more for Evi now sadly, so it would be lovely to think there is something, however small, we can do to help another greyhound. If you wish to donate to Daybreaks, then of course that would be wonderful. I will package everything up and give it Ruth when we see her on Wednesday. I hope some of it comes in useful. We will be following Suzie's progress, so please keep us posted! xx

Thank you again Cinders for your advice. I would be glad to take you up on your offer of the renal supplements etc. that you have, but I would like to pay you for it or make a donation to Ruth for Daybreaks. I couldn't accept it otherwise as I know it's expensive. I have just collected a bag of Royal Canin renal food today to get her started and she has eaten it no problem mixed in with her burns for now, and slowly increased over the next few weeks. I think Suzie has been diagnosed quite early, so we hope we can extend her life a little bit. Thanks again for valuable advice. XX

So sorry to hear this Nes...it's really hard...we are thinking of you here and sending cuddles and licks to Suzie...a friend of mines lurcher had kidney problems...it all happened so fast...you do have to take each day as it comes, and as someones already mentioned there are special diets that you can put them on to help...obviously the bland things like rice, chicken etc are always good, and obviously plenty of cuddles but I expect she already gets those...I will ask my friend more info if you want? Do wish you all the best and thinking of you..She is a beautiful dog.Well done for giving her a fantastic home. Xxx

Hi Nes, we just lost our Evi to kidney failure. She was in quite an advanced stage when it was discovered and she was given six months absolute tops. She lasted nearly 11 months and the vet said it was undoubtedly due to the things we did. There is so much you can do - either try one of the prescription diets, or if they don't take to that (as Evi didn't) you can do your feeding of a raw diet (which again Evi refused!) or a high quality protein diet adding a phosphorous binder like ipakatene, and various supplements. We also used Lori Rose, the homeopathic vet. In fact, I researched it so thoroughly I think I could probably write a thesis on it! If you would like to talk to me, ask Ruth for my phone number and you can contact me directly - there is far too much to put on a comment here. I'm convinced that Evi's life was extended by the things we did and the vet said she was "amazing". We also still have a variety of things which are unopened, including some kidney support renal supplements, some unopened cans of kidney diet which are well in date and a couple of trays of a food which is designed for heart and kidney failure which I managed to get from a place in France which they don't do here and which was highly recommended. My husband is seeing Ruth next week at a fundraising event, we could package them all up and give them to Ruth and you could pick them up from Daybreaks? Do feel free to get in touch though, I can talk you through all the things I found out about protein, phosphorous binding etc. Oh, and give her mineral water to drink - it flushes out the toxins whereas tap water just builds up more toxins! Let me know if you would like all the stuff we have left - it's all in date and has been used up until a couple of weeks ago. x

Hi Missfifi, so sorry to hear about your beloved Frank. Looking back I think Suzie has had this condition coming on for a about a year. The last two lots of injections she has had, I asked the vet to listen to her heart thinking she might have a heart murmur. Her cough/gagging has been worse recently, and on investigation under anaesthetic, the vet found that her larynx had narrowed somewhat. They can offer an operation as it becomes much worse but like you I don't know if I could put her through that. We will just do our very best for her and enjoy the time we have with her. Thank you for your comments.

Thanks Caro for your help. Our vet said that Suzies Creatinine levels were raised even though he recognised that greyhounds had a slightly higher level than other dogs, but I think you are right that she should have it tested again in a few months. Thanks again.

I have experience with this condition with my beloved boy Frank. He suffered with auto immune conditions which affected his nails and his eyes and developed this condition when he was about the same age as Suzie. He coughed and spluttered when eating which got progressively worse and which was increasingly distressing for him. I explored the surgical options which did, eleven years ago, exist. In the end I decided against it. The risk of complications seemed to me in his case too great and my beloved boy was pts. He had bravely battled with dry eye, goggles (!) and claws which dropped out all the time for most of his life and I felt his time had come to go to the bridge. It took about a year for the condition to get to this point. If you are not already seeing a referral vet at the Willows it may be worth doing so. I am sorry that I cannot be more positive but every grey is different.
In the end it's the quality of life today that matters for me and my hounds - everything crossed that Suzie has lots of quality time with you and all who love.

Don't have any info on the Larangeal problem but re the Kidneys if Suzie has just had a blood test only I would advise a repeat one in a couple of months, Greyhounds have a very unusual blood chemistry and often have what is termed raised creatinine levels which in non greys would indicate kidney problems but in greys can be quite normal. Having said that if you vet is certain it's kidneys then there are diets you can put them on to give the kidneys an easier time.

Suzie has just been diagnosed with Larangeal paralysis, does anyone have any experience with this condition please? To top it all the blood tests she had also showed that her kidneys are failing. So any tips/ thoughts on either would be gratefully received.

Just looking back at all the lovely comments about our Suzy Bluebell, as she is called now (mainly Suzy). It is hard(ish) at first because to the greyhound, living in a home is so strange as all they have been used to is a kennel. You were all so right. She is sooo very friendly, such a beautiful dog and we, and all our friends and family love her so much. Dare I say, have we had the best dog in the world??? I am sure lots of you would disagree? Ohhhhh nooooo! I was 'chosen' by Suzie when I popped to the kennels the other day, and I thought I was safe from her charms because she was reserved! She's so adorable and will will brighten up the right family's home. I expect she would benefit from having a young active family who can give her all the love and attention she deserves. Best of luck little one, I will tell everyone at Solihull Carnival about you and do my best to get you and your friends a fab home! Em xxx

Suzie was too active for the lady who was going to have her. She took Ruthie instead after our advice. It was not about her tail, in fact it isn't that short!

Friday 11 Jun 21:46

oh Suzie i am so sad to see that you have been unreserved, surely not because you have a poorly tail? don't worry if thats the case someone will give you a home with or without tail, two of my boys are short tailed and i love them dearly. biggest ever hug to you little girl see you on sunday. xxxx

by kallie

Friday 04 Jun 15:53

dear neilio, please don't worry about Suzie having to lose her tail. my rossi had exactly the same helicopter waggy tail Suzie had and for exactly that reason he kept smashing it against doors walls etc and broke it in several places. he now is the very proud owner of a short tail which he still wags furiously ( ask everyone at the kennels i am one of the volunteers and rossi comes with me when i go and help). it's the best thing for Suzie as she will keep hurting her tail even more if she keeps it. she will still be the most gorgeous girl out there, my Rossi most certainly is still the most handsome young hound. best wishes and happy days with your lovely girl. Ina :-)

Went to collect Suzie today, she is a lovely dog and we were really looking forward to bringing her home but she unfortunately will need to have surgery to remove the best part of her tail. It is very sad, as looking at the posts on site - it seemed to be a big part of her character. We are very much looking forward to going back on Saturday morning to bring her home and wish her well during her operation tomorrow morning.

Suzie ran over 100 races and always tried her best. She is a very friendly dog and her tail was always wagging round in a circle. I really miss her and hope someone gives her a loving home and she has a happy retirement - she certainly deserves it. Harryracer.

Friday 28 May 22:19

She looks like my Katie and looks adortable - Milly had a really bad cut on her tail after catching it on a door at a friends house and the vet wanted to cut her tail off - (Nasty Man). We put germolene new skin on and it worked a treat. If I had a bigger car I would give her ago - Good Luck !
