My lovely girl celebrated her Gotcha day with a bad tummy after drinking stagnant water in the garden, so spent two days gurgling and eating grass. Much better now and has just had meat and rice - three years on our sofa, five cats and three kids. You are a truly lively girl x

Fab day today with Cookie as she roared round the field with her spaniel friend Bella. I have to say a greyhound running free is the most beautiful thing - and made a freezing cold walk fantastic fun!

Happy New Year to everyone at Daybreaks and to all the dogs who have found and are looking for new homes. This year is our first full year with Cookie and I adore that dog! A big thank you to everyone who has supported the sleepover and the dogs dinner - I was very proud to be part of both. There are so many brilliant people who give us their time money and sofas to help these lovely dogs- but I want to say a massive well done to Ruth, who keeps it all running and keeps a smile on her face even on the bad days - this week may not have been the best but you've helped hundreds of dogs this year - so keep your chin up lovely!

My gorgeous girl missed the dog show yesterday as she was at the vets on a drip! She had a really bad upset stomach with profuse vomiting on Saturday and was at the emergency vets early next morning. We brought her home this morning and she has seen our vet - who has given her more antibiotics and something to calm her stomach. She's had a small amount of chicken and rice and is zonked on the bed - it seems she has a tummy bug but I can't help being very worried about her. If anyone has any tips on getting her back on form and eating and drinking let me know!

Happy birthday my darling girl. You are quite honestly gorgeous and bringing you home was one of the best things we ever did. We got an amazing dog who lives happily with five cats and three kids and I've met loads of fantastic people at kennels and out and about. Enjoy your bone and your bed (I think that's my bed). Your muzzle may be graying but you are always beautiful to me x

Just a quick one to say Cookie is thriving on the Nature's Diet - the lamb and the chicken don't smell anywhere near as bad as the fishy versions and she is gobbling up every bit. The only downside is she carries off each lump to her bed to eat - very strange. Thanks Ruth for getting it for me - give me a week or so and I'll be ordering the next lot!

I was intending to come on next week to wish Cookie happy gotcha day - but based on her behaviour today, you can have her back! A 15 minute rescue attempt after she disappeared into the thickest patch of the woods to dig a hole in the pouring rain . So Ruth if you would like to put her up for homing?

Hi all, after a bit of advice as always! After losing one of our lovely cats I'm considering a kitten, but wanted any tips on how to introduce it to Cookie. Cooks has been fine with the cats but they are a bit quieter than a kitten would be. Thanks PS Cooks is booked in to Bark Inn for her holidays - it was the sausage casserole that did it!

highly recommend Bark Inn as they only take greys and Cookie would be spoiled rotten. They also have dogs waiting to be rehomed at Day Breaks.
It is very easy to find .just off the M42 at Tamworth

hi jennie , we have used top hat and tail in the past for our previous dog, they are near the airport not far from daybreaks, they do accomodate for greyhounds with the feeds etc, they are really freindly , if you look at the links on the daybreak home page you will see it on there. hope this helps. ann and ellie - may.x

Hello Jenni

We use Bark Inn Kennels but although it is not in Birmingham, not sure whether you can get over to the kennels at Baddesley Ensor?.

Our three have stayed there several times and have had a great stay.

Thursday 12 Jan 15:07

Can anyone recommend a good kennel for her majesty when we go on holiday? She has been offered accommodation with my parents, but it's shooting season down there and she's a quivering wreck, so somewhere in Birmingham would be great.

Hi Jen, Very sorry to hear about Dylan. I hope Cookie's pad heals up soon. I expect she is not too impressed with having to wear a boot! x

by Jenni

Monday 12 Dec 20:37

Hi Kate, thanks for your message - it's Dylan and sadly he has kidney failure and anaemia - so it isn't looking too good. He's nine now and survived the fits and suspected brain damage when he was a kitten so he's done well. Cookie is scared witless of him and she's also not well as she's scuffed one of her pads. Thanks to Ruth she has a fetching little boot to wear!

A very belated thanks to everyone for their advice - I would still love to add another dog to our family, but one of our geriatric cats is now ill so it doesn't seem fair to him at the moment (and the vets bills are just a bit pricey!).
Thanks to Ruth for your help today - lovely to see you and cuddle a few dogs when I was there!

Hi Jenni & Cookie,we have Blue & Ben,they have been together about 14 months,we had Blue about 4 months before we had Ben.Blue was fine by herself, but we have found having Ben has been good company, and settled her down when we go out. We have not found any problems with two,as they get on really well together, and we believe that this is the most important thing, get this right and it should be easy. One will be the boss, hopefully Cookie as that would probably work better, but take Ruth's advice. We have been lucky with ours and honestly have no regrets and would recommend it. Why not come to sutton walk on sunday and chat to a few people about it,(i'll be the fat one!)

So many people have just about said it all.....my warts with having 2: Reubes was totally not bothered by anything on walks until I got Blossom, she has led him astray -but only a tiny bit. Both are still really easy to handle, and I only have trouble with other loose dogs or owners not listening when I say keep back - in case my 2 lurch, which they will but are improving over time. My 2 lie together, but that wont necessarily be the case for you. Bloss still likes time out, so leaves the lounge whereas Reubes is always with me and its no bother at all. Bloss shouts for her tea, Reubes didn't until Madam came along!! But its all good fun I promise, def let Cookie choose the new dog along with your daughter though. You'll know when its right.

Hi jenni, we have had Sid for just over a year. We were looking at having another grey and weighing up - should we/shouldnt we, then we saw Tink, a 1 year old , who we brought home a week ago :) Sid and Tink are complete opposites, she is a live wire and Sid is your typical couch potato. It has been a hard week, as she is so young and not doing too well with her toilet training, and they have both had a few grumbles. Tink really loves sid though, and he is coming round slowly, but i know it will be worth the hard work in the end. Good luck in whatever you decide :) suex

Hi Jenni and Cookie! Hope Cookie is feeling a bit better. It's not nice having a dicky tum. We have 2 also, Lola & lena. Like you we'd had Lola 6 months and had been kind of thinking about another. Lola was absolutely fine on her own really, but we are both out at work and thought it might be nice for Lola to have some company. I love having the 2 especially as ours are so completely different. Like Mand, we have one who is so laid back she is horizontal (that's Lola) and then there is Lena! Lola chose Lena as the girl we'd had our eye on was a complete no-no for Lola. 12 months on now with Lena and it's so much fun. Here's my warts bit....Walking 2 non-cat friendly greys can be a challenge. Ours both react to cats and squirrels but you get used to dealing with it. Lena also is not brilliant with other breeds when we are out (Lola's fine) but is getting better with training and patience. Also at first I was nervous getting 2 out of the car on my own, but you do learn how to deal with it with practice. It's a personal choice but I love having 2 and especially because ours are such different personalities. Best of luck in whatever you decide. Linda x

by kallie

Monday 21 Nov 18:47

i have always owned at least two dogs, different breeds before the greys came along and generally find that although they love our company they also thrive on the canine companionship, we have three boys and all of them chose me and then each other, they are good together and i never worry about having to leave them whilst at work. the best thing to do is to take your little human and your lovely Cookie monster and let them have a look at the kennels whether there is a grey that fits their bill..you will know instantly when it's right...good luck :-) xxx

We'd had our boy 12 months before we decided to get another. Thought it might be nice to add a girl, so went up to the kennels to walk Gent and one little girl together, but it just didn't feel right. About a month later we met Emily and felt she was 'the one'. Gent didn't seem to object, so we reserved her there and then. We did everything Ruth told us to do when she came home and introduced them both outside the house, took them both for a short walk together first before bringing her through the front door. She was was crated at night and during the day when we weren't there for the first week, but I can honestly say that we haven't had a problem at all. Gent just seemed to accept her from day one. Emily is a very lively little girl, as opposed to Gent, who is one chilled out dude. They seem to compliment each other and we wouldn't be without either of them. Probably the best thing to do would be to take Cooks up to the kennels and see how she gets on with the others, walking her and another grey will help to see how you feel with a dog on each arm too. Just glancing over at my other half and he's speaking 'grey' to Emily, who says she wants her tea - NOW!! and rubbing the ears of Gent, who is giving endless bows and wagging his tail. I agree it's not double the work having two, but it's certainly double the fun, double the cuddles and double the love. We'll be in Mell Square, Solihull this weekend with our two if you wanted to pop up for a chat, but otherwise good luck. Mand x

Cookie has met Twiggy, so I am sure she knows what I mean!....xx

by Jenni

Monday 21 Nov 14:56

I think it's Twiggy who has to put up with them isn't it! I need a very relaxed dog who will put up with the pint sized peril (Maggie my 3 year old daughter, not Cookie!) But I think I would be happy with her having some company in the day and he'd love another dog to tear around the garden with.

by fi,charlie,fly+Lucy

Monday 21 Nov 13:59

Best thing i ever did was get my second... I worry far less about Charlie whilst i am at work, and after the initial settling in grumbles they love each other! xx

Monday 21 Nov 12:34

As the proud owner of 7 I can assure you 2 is no more trouble than 1 , you have just got to choose the right grey for your circumstances. Most greys love the company of other greys so normally it is quite straightforward introducing another.

Monday 21 Nov 10:48

Hi all,
Cookie's been with us six months now and is doing really well, although is flat out on the sofa with a bad tummy today. Cooks is really well settled, although she is still stalked by my daughter (who is learning!) and still a bit shy. I am debating whether to get another grey to give her some company and to help her confidence. I'd be really grateful if people could give me the warts and all of having two dogs rather than one. I've considered the practical - cash, car etc but it's whether it will benefit Cookie.
Any advice welcome.

Thank you for your advice - that is very helpful and useful to know. I definitely think now that when the time comes we'll bring Mia across and keep an open mind with regards to boys or girls and let Mia make the final decision!! She's pretty easy to get on with I think : )Thank you again xx

Thursday 28 Apr 09:51

Hi. We have 2 girls Lola and Lena and they get on just fine. Lola was with us first and when we went to kennels to look for a friend she rejected the first girl she met (the one we had our eye on) but said a big yes to Lena when Zoe brought her out for them to meet. So we definitely found it's true that the dogs choose each other. They are very different personalities which is really nice. Lola & Lena will be at the Webbs roadshow on Sunday if you are nearby and want to see 2 girls who happily live together.

by skinnyme

Wednesday 27 Apr 22:20

Hi cinders, I have 4 girls and 2 boys, in my experience they have all equally got on, it depends on the character of the dog, I think you would have to let Mia and Cookie meet and see how they got on. Certainly don't rule out a girl and Cookie is such a sweetheart.

by cinders

Wednesday 27 Apr 21:28

Hi everyone, as we have mentioned to a couple of you we're very much coming round to the idea of getting another greyhound at some point, certainly within the next few months, to go with our Mia (who is the most adorable girl ever!) The general advice seems to be that she'd get on better with a boy and we would like a boy but all the ones we had our eye on e.g Tommy keep getting snapped up as we can't get over to you that often! However, this little girl seems adorable - probably she'll get snapped up before we get over, but out of interest do you think two girls are ok together or would that not be a good thing for Mia? Obviously we'd be doing it for her sake as well as our own as we believe she'd enjoy a companion and she'll have to have a big "say" in which dog we eventually get!!!.. so do you think we should stick to looking at boys only or can we consider girls too? xx
