Fizz is doing really well. Really has a character, sure she isn't a Greyhound! An excellent watchdog, barks and won't let anybody in our house friend or foe. Such a funny girl, so loving though. Still showing no more signs of the dreaded C word! fingers crossed it stays this way. xxx

Hi Mark, Fizz definatly has her paws under the table, and she has not touched the tree, really surprised about that. Must stop at three! No more room at the inn. :( Ruth you are fab, such a lovely warm person. I am so glad we gave her that chance, she is a monkey, but such a sweet monkey. Fingers and toes crossed for her!!! I will keep you posted xx

Another update on Fizzy. All settled down, now with the other doggies. The two girls still a bit grumpy with each other, but I am sure that will pass. Pixie now stays in the crate, she loves it, and Billy and Fizz have the lounge and dinning room, why we are at work, so Pixie can still see whats going on. Fizz is really coming out of her shell, such a funny girl. No problems with her foot, even forget she has the C word! So all good news at the Grubby house hold. xx

Hi, Just a quick update, Fizzy is doing really well. Had a few problems with her when we went to work, so had to have a crate, as she trashed the kitchen/diner. Ooops. Soon cleaned up though. No real damage. The crate seems to be working ok, think Fizz is finally getting to know our routine, and that we have to work and will come back. Apart from that, she is smashing and we love her to bits. xx

Please someone look past Fizz's diagnosis, I adopted Iris in January with a poor prognosis due to a large lump in her throat, 8 months later and she is as fit as a fiddle and has given us so much joy, I am so happy to have her and Fizz is just waiting to give some lucky family her love.

Ruth . . . . I haven't been able to write anything here yet, & there are still no words . . . . i feel heartbroken that I am not able to be with this little girl when she needs me.

I hope there is someone that will help her to live every moment to the full & love her to bits until the end, whenever that is.

I will pray for a miracle & keep everything crossed that the diagnosis is incorrect - I realise that's doubtful, because Chris is brilliant & Ruth only entrusts her babies to him.

There are just no words . . . God bless you Fizz! XXX

Poor Fizz....sometimes life is so unfair. xxx

by DaybreaksRuth

Wednesday 24 Aug 20:20

I've not wanted to put an update on Fizz as it is something hard to explain. I had an appointment with her vet Chris on Monday. Chris sought the advice from an orthopaedic specialist about the presentation and results of her lump, and unfortunately is seems as though it is not good news. Despite showing no signs at the moment, prognosis looks a bit grim. If she has a year she will be doing well. The only way to get a definitive prognosis would be to amputate her toe and the lump higher up which is a major procedure. This is a lot of money to spend on an operation and a lot to put Fizz through especially if the results are not good. However, if we do not operate, the only way of knowing if she will be ok is if she is still showing no signs after a year. This obviously makes her much more homeable but is a year down the line........ such a horrible situation but nothing we can do about it......

by MarkJ

Thursday 18 Aug 22:57

Fizz is fine, thanks. She’s having regular walks along the sand dunes and on the beach. Fizz, Jayne and our two will be there for another two weeks - until the end of the school holidays. The lump has healed nicely after her tests and hasn’t bothered her at all.

She really has been through it hasn't she. She deserves a bit of luck & lots of love & fun! Hopefully, although that sounds bad enough to go through, that's all it will turn out to be & it isn't anything life threatening. Perhaps she bumped that old injury in the garden when we had our accident with Ellie Cat?

Sending you all our love Fizz - I never stop thinking about you! XX

by DaybreaksRuth

Friday 29 Jul 00:49

Hi Deb, I took her to see Chris who did the bone biopsy. As the results were inconclusive it was felt best to wait for approx 6 weeks and repeat the x-rays and monitor her in the interim and see if anything changes.

Hopefully we are looking at nothing more serious than osteomyelitis which in basic terms is inflamation of the bone following injury as it looks like she has dislocated her toe in the recent past as this is showing discrepancies.

She could be treated with steroids or more likely amputation of the osteomyelitic lump and damaged toe. However steroid treatment cannot be started until osteomyelitis is a confirmed diagnosis so she is on anti-inflamatories for now.

I have heard from Jayne and she is enjoying her holiday in Wales which is a well deserved treat following all what she has been through recently x (hope this all makes sense!)

by DaybreaksRuth

Tuesday 26 Jul 19:25

I've just had a phone call from Chris the vet and the results are unfortunately inconclusive. This means a tumour can't be ruled out but at the moment osteosarcoma doesn't look likely which is fantastic news. I have spoken to Jayne who reports that her pad and toe are now swollen so we have a 9am vet appointment booked tomorrow and we will see what the next step is. Glass of wine time for me I think :-)

Hi Deb, Jayne has decided to keep Fizz at home and postpone her holiday until we get the news.... if it is good news, then she needs to be admitted to have her operation asap.... I didn't think she had lost weight as she has the appetite of a horse! She is on anti-inflammatories and pain killers following her op so is not limping currently :-)

by court-family

Tuesday 26 Jul 17:29

Ruth, I can't stand it! The waiting & not knowing is really awful. I know Fizz is on holiday at the moment, which is so lovely for her, so not actually with you, but just wondering how she is in herself? Is she still limping badly & does the lump still appear to be growing. Is it my imagination, or has she lost some weight too? She looks really 'ribby' in the new window seat photo . . . poor baby =(

Just a quick update on Ellie (not that this is a cat site!!). She has been back to vets today as seemed very dull & unhappy - not as bright as she was when she came home on Monday. After more bloods & x-rays, & under anaesthetic, the vet discovered an infected puncture wound & a rupture. She had surgery to repair & clean the wounds & is now doing well again - back on fluids & now on antibiotics. Fingers crossed we have it under control now. XX

I totally agree with you deb! Had Fizz had her muzzle on, no harm would've been done. The incident was a freak accident & I really would not want anyone to think for one second that Fizz is a at all nasty - she is the sweetest, friendliest. gentlest girl & someone is going to be very very lucky to find in this sweet pup a loyal lifelong companion. Please please please try not pre-judge Fizz, she is an absolute sweetheart. XX

by Deb

Tuesday 05 Jul 19:02

Fizz is a lovely little girl and as newly retired Grey the unfortunate incident was Fizz doing what she was trained to do during her racing career. Many of the greys need to settle into retirement and prospective owners should not be put off but take on board what Deb said about her lovely character. A muzzle, some training and understanding her nature will hopefully lead to a safe and happy rehoming.

My heart is heavy at just seeing you back on the homing page sweet girl. I am desperately trying to think with my head & not my heart & so I have to let you go little one. I feel so incredibly guilty for opening our home & hearts to you, only to take it from you again. I would dearly love to keep you, but i have to consider Ellie & the 5 children, who were absolutely terrified to witness the horror yesterday. We all know that it wasn't your fault & I will always blame myself - I know that Ruth will find you a very special forever home princess.

I will never ever forget you Fizzy Pop & the bond we already shared in our short time together - be happy & be lucky baby, I will love you always sweet angel. XX

ps. miraculously, Ellie is on the road to recovery & has no serious injuries. She is very bruised & very sore, but is out of danger thankfully. This makes things a little easier to bare - I would really like to thank you all, especially Ruth, for being so kind & understanding, and for supporting me through this incredibly difficult & heartbreaking decision. You are all very special people.

Hello Deb
there is no need to apologize for having sent Fizz back, yu have to do what is right by Ellie cat as she was there first and hopefully she will be better soon and so will you. All dogs, not just greys have the instinct to go for cats, it can lie dormant but when you have a pack of dogs it can easily resurface....Fizz will find a new home, she is a gorgeous little girl and you have given her a start by having her in your home. i wish you and Ellie cat a speedy recovery and hope that your heart ache stops soon as well. much love Ina and the boys. xxxx

Monday 04 Jul 17:45

Hi Deb. On holiday and just read your message. My heart totally goes out to you because I know how bad you feel when something happens that you feel responsible for. I once trapped Gent's tail in my electric window on my car. It took 3 months to get his tail back to normal and I will never forgive myself for what happened. We all do the best we can for our Greys and no-one could doubt your commitment to them. Greyhounds are animals first and foremost, whose instincts can get the better of them whatever the circumstances and even the most experienced of Greyhound owners will recall a tale of some sorts during their time as owners. Please try not to be too hard on yourself and I hope that you feel better soon. Lots of love Mand, Gent & Emily xx

Monday 04 Jul 16:49

Hi Deb, having read your comments on Fizz so far it is clear how hard you have worked with her and along with your help with Maisie, no one can question your dedication and commitment to giving these greys the best possible chances. I can totally empathise with your feelings as Roxy once got my cat after he ran in the front door as she was waiting to go out for a walk. She'd never shown any interest until then but as soneone else has said instinct kicks in and you couldn't have done any more than you clearly already did. Fizz will appreciate all you've already taught her which will help her find a new home. I hope you feel better soon both mentally and physically. Love and hugs, Laura and Roxy xxx

Deb, I think you have dealt with the very thing us other greyhound owners dread (catching a cat), no matter how sweet and loving these dogs are, there is a deep instinct, which once takes over, we cannot stop. You are doing what is best for your family, your pets and Fizz, your decision is made through love, you are not giving up on her, but giving her another chance. My heart goes out to you and your family, I hope Ellie Cat pulls through and that your injuries will feel better soon...Ruth will find Fizz another home, she will always be in your heart, you are doing what's best for Fizz and that is amazingly unselfish, take lots of care, you are in my prayers xxxx

Sunday 03 Jul 22:36

As i write this message I am totally distraught. There has been a terrible accident here this evening & I am completely devastated.

Ellie Cat has fallen off the fence into the garden & has been seriously injured by the girls. It all happened SO quickly that I was just unable to prevent it - I am absolutely, totally responsible as Fizz hadn't got her muzzle on & the guilt I feel is almost too much to bare.

I jumped straight in to rescue Ellie & received some nasty injuries as a result - both dog & cat bites. It was an horrific accident & we rushed Ellie straight to emergency to try to save her. She was clearly in shock & had several wounds. The vets initially suspected she had a punctured lung, but thankfully x-rays showed her chest was clear. She was given oxygen, pain relief & put on fluids for the shock. We have since heard that thankfully she has stabilised & I am praying that she will pull through the night. Only time will tell.

I went off to A&E for treatment to my swelling arm & fingers - X-rays showed nothing is broken, just very deep, sore puncture wounds, bruising and swelling.

We are all in shock here - I am so incredibly upset that I cant begin to tell you. We love Fizz to bits - she is the most gorgeous, sweet natured girl & she is just absolutely not to blame for what was a terrible accident. I blame myself completely & utterly.

As a family, we have talked lots about our options moving forward. The last thing we want is to lose either Ellie or Fizz, but all things considered we feel it would be unfair on both of them to have to cope with the stress of living together. So reluctantly, however heartbreaking it is to lose her, we are going to have to let this little princess go.

The family who gives this beautiful pup her forever home will be the luckiest people in the world - she is the lovliest, cuddliest, lickiest, waggiest beautiful girl. I am too sad for words that her forever home is not to be with us.

Fizz, we love you so much & you will be missed for a very, very long time. I am SO sorry that I have let you down so badly - I doubt that I will ever forgive myself.

Ruth, there are just no words to express how awful I feel & how sorry I am that I have allowed this to happen. I am completely devastated to have let both you & Fizz down, but also to have let down every grey owner who knows just how wonderful these gentle dogs are. Fizz is absolutely not to blame - I just hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me.

Deb.

Just 2 initial settling garden trips again & then a completely quiet night until 7am again - I am SOOOOOO pleased that this little girl has slotted into our brood, as she is such a beautiful little poppet, with the waggiest tail, the lickiest tongue & the sweetest personality.

I guess you've stolen our hearts & secured your forever home baby girl! :-D XXXX

Another peaceful night!

After initial woofing & 2 garden trips at 11pm, I didnt hear another peep until 7am. It's just an incredible turnaround & I am so pleased that Fizz has settled into our routine.

The silent back door technique & the rescue remedy have undoubtedly helped, but I have seen such a difference in the other girls too, that I put the majority of the behaviour changes down to the Burns food. It is absolutely amazing!

I had read about other owner's experiences, but until you see it first hand I don't think that you can appreciate the incredible impact the right diet can have on our woofs. And they love it! :-))

YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEE!! Fizzy slept through without a sound last night!! I am so happy - she is so much more settled all of a sudden. She did bark initially on going to be & obviously without the crate she was able to jump up the door. We did just one trip to the garden - the other girls don't even move off their beds now when we do the garden trip. Seems as though they have all learned that its just not worth the bother! I am so happy we seem to have cracked it - in just 7 nights! Hopefully tonight will go just as well. Keep you posted! x

Fizzy has been playing with Ebony & the squeaky toys today. It was lovey to see as they kept sneakily stealing them from each other. At one point they were both holding each end of a squeaky dumbell! Lots of waggy tails & heart warming to watch. It's funny though, as Fizz now thinks everything is a toy & tries to take daddies flip flop off his foot!!

Just a quick update on last night -

Fizz didn't settle straight away last night, even though she was really tired after a long walk & had had a good squib of rescue remedy, but it was only a few minutes before she stopped her protest & settles down in the crate.

Like clockwork she was awake and yapping (not so much barking if that doesn't sound crazy!). I went down to her & followed the technique - she had a wee & went back to bed no problems. She barked again almost straight away, so we went outside again - she just seems happier to be outside to be honest & I had to go & fetch her in to go back to bed.

Wondering if she might not like the confines of the closed crate I decided to leave it in the room, but not secure the door, to see if it made a difference to her. She had another squib of RR & went back to bed. Straight away, Kiera nipped into the crate and curled up cozy - Fizz stood & whined a little & then lay down on Kiera bed. I went back to bed at 4am & she was fine until 6.30am when Darren got up for work.

I have removed the crate & i am going to try her again tonight, continuing the techniques . . . we WILL get there, I am determined!

Hi guys - thanks for your support. Yes, I am using the rescue remedy - it's not that she doesn't seem calm when she goes to bed, she is really chilled. Calming tabs might be worth a shot tho - get some tomorrow. I am using the crate in the room with the others & she is happy to go in there really nicely. She seems to settle okay at first - so far the barking hasn't started until about 3am, but then she can't seem to settle again after that - i do give her more rescue remedy then, she toilets on her first trip to the back door & last night eventually settled outside on the patio! I did have to laugh really!

The room is closed by two half glass doors - one into the kitchen & one int the hall. The hall is a no no as it is direct access upstairs, but i have tried leaving the door to the kitchen open, but she still doesn't settle. The door from the kitchen then leads to the lounge, dining room & conservatory which is all open plan. It's not even that she wants to be on the sofa, because as yet she hasn't ventured up like the others do (although i'm certain she will).

Anyway, try again tonight - no work tomorrow so it doen't matter if i look like a zombie!!! :-))

hi Deb, just wondering but has that room got a door that you close at night? all of my boys hate being behind closed doors and will whine, i put a dog gate up instead so that they can actually look out of the room and they are all good as gold...just a thought and if it has a door it may be worth a try with a dog gate?! good luck and thanks for giving it all you've got, she is so very lovely. :-) xxxx

Hi Deb, have you tried the crate yet and have you been giving her the rescue remedy? It is still early days, and I know how frustrating it is when you need sleep (been there many times) but she WILL get there........ It might be worth trying some herbal calming tablets which should make her feel very relaxed and hopefully want to sleep the night thro! x

Have been repeatedly using Ruth's technique of gently taking Fizz by collar & out side the back door for 5 mins each time she barks during the night. It is tiring when I just want to go back to bed, (I don't even make it back to bed & she is barking again!), but I hope it will work if i persevere. Fizz isn't making a fuss about going out & seems to just accept that is where she is going & then back to bed - but then she barks again! Last night I kept at it from 4am (in the dark) until 5-30am (the birds were singing & the sun was up!) but I had to laugh because in the end Fizz just lay down on the patio & closed her eyes!!!! I had to bring her in as it was trying to rain & as it was almost time to get up anyway I left all the girlies out of bed & went for my shower - it's amazing that she didn't make a sound when left out of the sleep room, just went to sleep in the lounge!

I really would prefer to confine the girls to the sleep room at night as I always have done previously with no problems at all (it's a large utility off the kitchen with room easily for four large beds).

If anyone has any other ideas that have worked for night time barking & scratching - or if you have anymore ideas Ruth in addition to what I am doing - I would be eternally grateful.

I'm nowhere near ready to throw in the towel on this little girl, she is far too lovely, I just need more suggestions!! XXXXXX

We've been having a few teething problems at night with Fizzy Pop barking & howling. Ruth has given me some great advice to help Fizz to settle & last night I only had to get up once. I have changed her food as suggested, have bought some rescue remedy & have borrowed a cage to help her settle in the night room with her sisters. Fingers crossed we will get it cracked, as we are already incredibly attached to her - I have every confidence in the little Lady as she is perfect in every other way!!! Thanks Ruth for your reassurance and invaluable help & support. X deb

Fizzy Pop slept all night with the 3 girlies, still muzzled just in case, but not a single grumble. She did whine for about 5 mins but then all was quiet until 6am when i was woken by beautiful singing!! Ellie Cat is back in already & has had brekkie - but to reduce the stress for everyone, we have relocated her to a dog free area for now! All girls enjoyed a nice brekkie & toiletted outside & no night time accidents, clever girl. XX

What an eventful day! All the girlies getting on really well & Fizzy Pop has really settled quickly - she already has a favourite bed & is following me everywhere! She has a very, very waggy tail which is constantly beating a tune as it bangs off everything. We did have a slight kittie incident - although Fizz is doing really well with learning to leave Ellie Cat alone, she did momentarily try to get onto the work surface to play!! Ellie has fallen out with me again (I got the 'not another dog' look) & gone into temporary hiding, but she will come round in a couple of days as usual. We have had a lovely walk altogether, liking the look of the park as we passed, but a little too excited to venture in today. No accidents in the house as yet, all clean & dry so far, clever girl. Hoping for a quiet night - I'll let you know tomorrow . . . night night xxx

Hi little girl - we were just wondering if you might fit into our clan? We have a gaping hole since losing beautiful Maisie & have plenty of space for a little one! You would need to tolerate our elusive kittie, who puts in occasional appearances, and share space with Lady (7), Kiera (5) & Ebony (collie cross, 5). Please let us know if we might fit your bill . . . lots of love X
