I spoke to Rocky's fosterers only yesterday. He has been with them since August 2011 and sadly despite many appeals, no one has come forward to offer him a home. They have said that if he is still not spoken for when they come back from their break next month, he will become a permanent member of their family even though they were not looking at adopting another. Although I have already, I want to pass on massive thanks to Mr & Mrs Jones for fostering him for so long - they are amazing people x

Hi Jenesis - sorry but we don't know - we don't have cats & he hasn't come in contact with any during his time with us - however he's great friends with my daughters Jack Russell - he does get used to other breads of dog after some exposure but out on a walk he tends to lunge at them - he now has another rosett from the Perry Bar Show Day to add to the one he won at the GGG - he has been in the wars again with an inflammed toe for which he is taking a course of antibiotics - he now goes for his walks to a newly planted wood which is fully enclosed by fencing so he & his friends are free to run wild & free - they do love it - he is a different looking dog to the one we took on - he's a great lad & will make someone a fantastic friend for the last years of his life

Hi Hollybollycollie - Rocky does have problems with other breeds, but soon gets used to them. When Ina dropped him off to us, he took one look at our yellow lab and started barking at her. We told him "no" and he has been fine ever since. He is also fine with our daughter's Jack Russell, who we look after when she is at work. He is getting used to the dogs that we meet regularly on our walks and is absolutely no trouble at home. We took him to the Great Greyhound Gathering last weekend and entered him in the over 7's class and he got a fourth !!! (out of about 40 dogs). If you are interested in taking him, please have a word with Ruth and we can arrange a meet.

by DaybreaksRuth

Sunday 25 Sep 06:29

Hi Hollybollycollie! Rocky is coming along to the open day today at Daybreaks so please come along to meet him if you can. He is still in a foster home in Burton as he was so distressed at the kennels, so today will be a great opportunity for people to see him.

I have a 10-yr old female whippet cross and if Rocky wants to come and live with us he's welcome - assuming he'd get on with our girl. We are a working family and thought it would be nice for our old girl to have a friend at home during the day. My boy and I were drawn to Rocky; he's gorge!!

I have a Grey x and a staffie x and both who are rescue dogs.I dont take my dogs out no more in the day,but instead i take them at night :/ I do this because Barney my Grey has been bit twice buy Staffies(which seem to be a status thing where i live),which are free to run around.I am absolutly terrified that one day they will kill him and i wont be able to protect him,so this is why i choose night time to take him out,i dont kw what it is but other dogs just dont like him :( I hope Rocky makes a speedy recovery! sending all my <3 to Rocky

good to hear you are on the mend xxxx

by Jones'

Monday 08 Aug 20:01

Having read the comments posted about Rocky - firstly we wouldn't dream of reporting the other dogs owners to the police beacause it was the result of cicumstances. The dog involved is a sweet dog who until this occasion had shown no indication of protecting his fellow pack member but his owners now realise that he needs to wear a muzzle as Rocky, Marty and Beau do. We have had dogs attacked before and did have the owner prosecuted because he had a large Weimeraner who was allowed to roam. The sad outcome to the attack was that the three dogs that were bitten all went on to develop cancer and had to be put to sleep. Also it does help that Charles and I are experienced dog owners, particularly with rescue dogs. We will continue to look after Rocky and give him the love and stability that he needs until someone comes alomg to offer him a forever home.

Monday 08 Aug 19:45

Rocky update - he is doing really well. We took him back to the vets last Wednesday to have his drain removed and check the wound. The vet was very pleased because his skin had been ripped from the muscle on his side and there was the worry that it would not re-attatch. He has to go back on Friday when they will remone half the stitches ( as the wound is so big the vet doesn't want to risk taking them all out at the samr time). We have been unable to walk him for ten days so he will be pleased to go out for a walk tomorrow(Tuesday). He is a real cutie and has been really good when we have been changing his dressings. He sends a big kiss to everyone who has sent him good wishes.

Hows Rocky wound healing?

by Winniethepooh

Tuesday 02 Aug 13:45

Hi again.

In relation to insurance etc. most insurance companies cover with their pet insurance public liability. Also if you sign up as a member of the Dogs Trust for £25.00 per year (I think) covers you for public liability for damage to other pets or property.

I signed up to this as our Vet plan doesn't cover this - just hope that I never have to use it!.

I hope Rocky is ok..... and thinking too of his foster carers.

by julie

Tuesday 02 Aug 10:04

These pictures really put the emphasis on using muzzels and putting your hands through the leads and wrapping them round, at least if they lunge you wont let go and i'd much rather me fall down and get bruised than having to face the stress and worry that this can do. My 4 ALWAYS wear muzzels...i've had to learn the hard way too i'm afraid:( I hope poor Rocky has a speedy recovery with no complications and also his foster family im sending hugs to for their kindness in looking after him:) Has not the other owner of the grey got Household Insurance/Pet Insurance to contribute/cover the costs? Perhaps another thing to think about if we unfortunately end up in this situation? xx

by Deb

Monday 01 Aug 19:42

I think what ever breed we own the lesson to learn is be vigilant in ensuring that our dogs are under control at all times.Although greys do rip and this appears to an attack by another Grey this was still a very nasty incident and there are lessons we can all learn from this.
Best wishes to all affected by this especially Rocky

by kallie

Monday 01 Aug 15:00

...as terrible as it all looks may i just point out that greyhounds do 'rip' incredibly easily and usually the wounds look a lot worse than they are....my Rossi and McKenzie had a slight argument about 18 month ago which lasted all of a split second and resulted in Rossi having to have three wounds in his side stitched...on a furry dog the damage tends to be just some tufts of hairs going missing but on our beloved greys it immediately results in long scars and lots of staples and stitches....amazingly enough they are also very resiliant and bounce back almost immediately....so here is to hoping that this beautiful boy will also bounce back very soon.... :-) xxxx

by LadyVictoria

Monday 01 Aug 13:20

Very sorry for everyone concerned. Poor Rocky, I do hope he makes a speedy recovery. Sending him lots of love. xxxx

by tiggersslave

Monday 01 Aug 13:00

Just a point ... when my lurcher had a neighbours cat I claimed on his insurance for the cat's treatment but if he hadn't been insured my house insurance would have paid as I had 3rd party liability with that too and with the house insurance I wouldn't have paid any excess. J x

by LindaPaul

Monday 01 Aug 11:11

Rocky gets my cuddle today. Having been through a similar experience myself with Lola (but luckily her injury was very minor compared with this) I can sympathise. In our case the loose dog's owner - it flew out of a house as we walked past with her on lead...did the decent thing and paid our vets bill straight away. It only take a second for this sort of accident to happen. Once the physical injuries have healed, I do hope Rocky is able to also get over the mental trauma. Lola was very nervous for a long time when big dogs come near her, She is still wary but much better now. I thought about it but we didn't report it as we felt the owner had learned a very hard lesson (it was a rescue dog) and at the end of the day that dog was also someone's pet and as owners we felt for them also. I will make a little donation for Rocky but my thoughts are with everyone xxxxx

by bestistdogs

Monday 01 Aug 10:57

Oh goodness me .. I hope the lad makes a speedy recovery. My 3 whoofs always wear muzzles (yes we probably look like the gladiators out and about) but I know if the unexpected happens they cannot cause injury although it doesn't prevent
them being injured. Best wishes to all Jx

by Winniethepooh

Monday 01 Aug 09:13

I have already commented but this must be so awful for everyone involved. I cannot get over how awful those injuries are.

by tiggersslave

Monday 01 Aug 07:58

And come to one of the training classes we offer - we teach people how to control and 'read' your dog so you don't let situations escalate. Jx

by DaybreaksRuth

Monday 01 Aug 06:34

Sadly the owner of the dog let go of the lead and it was an accident.... the other owner (who is actually an owner of a grey from Daybreaks) is really distressed about the situation.

It is one of those very unfortunate accidents but reinforces my constant worry of people holding on to a lead tight and using the muzzle :-(

by medaftboutdogs

Sunday 31 Jul 22:25

Oh you poor boy, that wound is massive. What is it with people letting their dogs off and not supervising them properly? We had a run in with a loose Jack Russell today - no owner in sight, but Bloss ended up with a bleeding lip. Sadly (sorry- Luckily) the Jack Russel ran off sharpish and unhurt when Reubes lunged at it. I was livid, and then I see poor Rocky and its just made me mad again.....hope you heal up soon big lad. luv t, r & b

by tiggersmum

Sunday 31 Jul 22:08

Please please please report this attack to the police under the Dangerous Dogs Act .. they will probably not want to take the report but you can insist and its a criminal offence ... poor Rocky- at least he survived but imagine if it was a smaller dog or a dog walked by a child and it went for the child :( Please report this before another dog is killed :(

Rocky is doing well and his weight has increased by a kilo in the last week. He is getting better with other breeds as we meet quite a variety on our twice daily walks. The walking is also improving his poor muscle tone and he is looking really good. Hopefully someone will want to give him a new home as he is such a sweetie and we cannot keep him on a permanent basis.

by Jones'

Sunday 17 Jul 14:16

Rocky update - he is settled in suprisingly quickly. On friday night he decided he didn't need to sleep in our room any more so he slept in one of the beds on the landing. Last night when we went up to bed he was actually lying side by side with Beau in Beau's bed although he did move up to the landing during the night. He has met our daughters Jack Russell, Milo, and after an initial barking session at him, he is now fine with him and Tilly our lab. We can honestly say that his only minor problem has been barking at non greys, but with a severe "no" that is getting better. He is a really sweet dog and we would love to keep him but unfortunately as we already have Tilly and four greys it is impossible. We have had no barking when he is left and to be honest the only other time he barks or whines is to tell us that its food time. We hope someone will be able to give this handsome chap a new forever home.

by Blackcat1

Saturday 16 Jul 09:29

Awww.. poor little chap. He's a real beauty too. I wonder if he'd get on with Jack and Sky. I'm at home a lot of the time now - although I do start Uni in September so I'll be out for a few hours, 3 times a week.

by Jones'

Wednesday 13 Jul 11:02

Rocky's first night was to be spent with his new mate Beau down stairs, however he had other ideas - so now he has his bed at the end of ours (what a life) - two quiet nights – we will slowly move him out when he settles - no accidents – he’s now getting used to the walks & recuperated fairly quickly this morning - meeting lots of other breeds & he's not reacting so much - enjoying his food & the treats - he's playing at being a rug in the hall again - what a great character he is - he will make someone a fab Forever Friend

Quite happy to drop off a sardine cake for him at the kennels if he would like one but he would need to share it with his foster family!

by DaybreaksRuth

Monday 11 Jul 19:58

So pleased he is doing so well..... he had a bath on arrival on Saturday as he was really terrible so a second bath has done him the world of good. His coat really is terrible - we have pulled handfuls out and also noticed him dragging his back feet a lot on his walk - his muscle tone is definitely low. The good thing is, is that he has such a good appetite so he should gain weight easily.

Thank you so much for agreeing to foster him - he was so stressed at the kennels during today and just didn't want this old fella to go through any more stress.... I am indebted to you x

by Jones'

Monday 11 Jul 19:54

Well it's early evening & all's well with Rocky - first on the menue when he arrived was a good wash & some treatment for his skin - then a walk in the woods - we have noticed that although at first he looks in good shape it is the thick coat that hides a lack of body mass & muscle - his ribs & pelvis are very prominent plus a distinct lack of running muscles in his hind legs - a short walk (half of what the others do on a twice daily basis) completely took it out of him to the point that he wasn't able to eat his evening meal - it took him a good hour to recouperate & then he got his appetite back - now he is playing at being a rug in the hall making a faint grumble when one of the other dogs walks past - we hope for a good night & will update you all on his progress

This fella is doing great at our house.... after a first evening of initial growling, Rocky is now unmuzzled with our 6. He was clean all night and has been eating well and is very settled here. He wasn't great on his walk with small fluffies but with some training he will soon learn to accept other breeds..... I am working on it!

Saturday 09 Jul 16:21

Rocky has been in a home since June 2006. Sadly he has been returned as he has had a recent change in behaviour since his owner became pregnant. He has started to get separation anxiety and has started toileting in the house.

I think he will overcome these problems easily with the right support and he will be stopping at our house for a full assessment and training until he finds a home.
