Happy Birthday to our big Sh*t, aka Pinkleberry Paddlepaws Fire Prince Haden. What is it, three years now and you are finally settling down. Phew. Sparky seems to be trying to take over your mantle of being the sod of the evening. You are a great guard dog and you are our big sh*t and we love you.

The longer we have Fire the more we realise why Ruth found him such a special boy, yes he still can be a sh*t and a tinker but he truly is an adorable and loving dog.

When you take on a new grey you don't really know their personality. We've had Fire since 15 Sept so nearly four months. Very quickly he got the nickname Tinker; he is now Pinckleberry Paddlepaws - don't ask! He and Joe have settled in really well, love yoghurt as part of their breakfast and love the walks in the Brittany countryside. He is adorable and so is Joe, now known as Sloppy Chops Joe!

Fire, aka You Little Tinker, latest, his way of waking me up from having a crafty snooze on the sofa - to nip my t shirt and drag me off the sofa!

Fire's new knickname is Tinker which describes his personality perfectly. Adorable Tinker and we forgive him pinching our beanie hats and hiding them on the sofa, nibbling us when it is walkies time and mad zoomings in the garden when he spins and doesn't see where he is going. We just love him to bits.

I wonder why this boy was taken from racing, three greys looking on in awe as he raced around the paddock this afternoon in the Autumn sunshine, so very fast. No surprising he is now flat out asleep. He loves the space here to run and play; I think he thinks he is a puppy again.

More toys destroyed! The only one left is now well guarded under his foot as he sleeps off this morning's walk and very energetic run around the paddock. He is a very cheeky chappie who loves to play in the morning and then sleep all afternoon.

Got some more toys today and Fire was more enthusiastic playing with them. You would think he was still racing the speed he gets to racing around the paddock. Thank goodness we have so much space. Currently in his usual space, flat out on the sofa fast asleep.

Fire has stopped thieving shoes and things but is still being a little tinker but he is a lovely dog and who could not forgive those doleful eyes even when he has been a tad naughty? So pleased to have Joe and Fire and they are doing well albeit Fire's farts need a peg on the nose! :o)

Fire is getting cheekier and cheekier and a tea leaf to boot. First it was my shoe to cuddle, then Richard's knee brace then my shoe again and then an ornamental stone from the fireplace. Oh and a pair of my knickers from the ironing basket. Love him.

Fire has arrived safely in France, had steamed chicken for breakfast and some mince and then some sardines in olive oil! Met his new house mates and went on a short walk as it is very hot and is now dozing on the sofa. Seems very settled. Another walk this evening after supper of steamed chicken. Joe arrives in about 10 days and then Dandy. Happy house full of hounds

Fire, I believe, is officially enjoying the chilled home life of a retired greyhound. He is now clockwork with our routines and loves just being "one of the boys".

The fluffy toys are becoming less of an impact with him and he seemed less keen with the other breeds (hopefully it's a start) when we passed them by on our walks.

He has a trademark move when he is asking for a fuss. He would rest his chin on top of Denn or Floppy's back, sofa, bed or your lap. His third picture on this profile, THAT is his trademark move together with Puss-in -boots eyes to match. He is sooo adorable and funny.

Fire is one greyhound that will really warm your heart.

How I wish Fire would go straight to a home instead of coming back to the kennels. He is sooo loving the home life now.

Fire has integrated well in a home set-up. He learned the routines easily, can be left alone with other greys (not on his own though as he still prefers company whether human or grey), can sit on command, listens, clean (no accidents), sleeps through the night (and day! lol) and is starting to enjoy what retirement is all about. The fluffy fixation has been lessen but still interest him (most greyhound do anyway) but he listens when you ask him to stop or leave the toy alone.

As with his keenness with other dog breeds, it is still a work in progress. I am quite confident he will get bored of them when expose everyday (through walks) in time. The day would come that it will click in his mind that he can be at peace with them. The more exposure to other dogs, the quicker Fire would overcome the keenness over them.

As most who work on Fire at Daybreaks would attest, he is very affectionate. It is hard not to fall in love with this big fellow. He loves the fuss, kisses and cuddles. There are a few occasion when he would return the gesture by licking your hand or nose. :)

Please if you could offer him a forever home, just let Ruth know. He is ready for his loving family and for him to offer his heart.

Thanks all. I've just continued what Deb/Julie already started with using treats in training Fire with the fluffies. Lately, I started using more of praises and less of the treats coz I don't want him to rely heavily on the food reward. It is working with Fire coz now his eyes are focus on me rather than the food. He still pinches the fluffy every now and then but the big difference now is he listens when I ask him to stop or leave it instead of being so fixated in destroying it.

Other dog breeds still affects him though when we go for walkies but I could feel the keenness is gradually changing.

His biggest achievement so far is being left alone with my two greyhounds for a longer period of time without creating a mess or making loud crying noise. He just chill out and sleeps most of the time with Dennis and Floppy. Night time, he sleeps soundly and wakes up the next morning. He only moves when I initiate getting up to start my morning.

I still don't trust him in the kitchen, so that part of the house has been fenced off using the clothes airing stands, lol. He is actually good not testing to jump over it coz I remembered when we fostered Amber, she jumped over it successfully. :D

It goes to show Fire is a good greyhound and keeps getting better. He just needs some guidance on how to live in a home. We greyhound owners know ex-racers only knew the kennel life their entire life before retirement. In time, he will enjoy just being retired, lol.

I do hope somebody would give him that chance of a forever home and happy retirement. Did I say he is sooo lovingly sweet? For Fire, you are his world! xxx

Hi joy, pleased to see Fire has started to listen to you. I have Max, he's fine with toys, but mad when he sees other breeds, doesn't matter big or small, he's not like Fire he doest listen to me, or take treats. The word NO is the only word that he sort of responds to, but he has had 8 years doing what he likes . Good luck with Fire I'm sure he's going to be a perfect boy one day :)))))) C & M xx

Fire passed his test of being left alone with my two greyhounds with flying colours. We were out today for a good 2 hours and went home with everything intact(lol). According to my son who stayed in his room, he didn't hear anything when we left and Fire seemed to join Denn and Floppy in their beds. The pack instinct worked with him well. That being said, I believe Fire can adjust easily in a home with another greyhound.

Fire still reacts to other dog breeds when we walk him. His prey drive is high. Only through constant exposure to other dogs, cats, squirrels and etc and through time could lessen this. It worked on my first greyhound Dennis as he was the same and maybe even worst than Fire. Now Dennis has been more tolerable with the fluffy wild life/toys and friendly towards other dog breeds.

The best news is that Fire is enjoying home life. Living with us now for almost a week, he is constantly improving everyday with our routines. He loves the chill out session with the boys. The running around the garden. The fuss and attention given him. He is more relaxed.

The welcome home committee has grown as well as everytime we come home and open the front door, Fire is there with Denn & Floppy, wagging his tail away, giving us the warmest welcome home a dog could give. He is sooo adorable. XXX - Myrna

Fire can do stairs, up and down. He is also quite good on a lead. He is muzzled everytime we go for walks as we don't know when is the next fluffy thing would pop out.

He definitely loves a company whether greys, human or both. I don't know yet how he is with being left alone as usually my 19 and 16 year old children would alternately look after him whilst Bri and I work. They did tell me he whimpers a little when we've just close the door behind us but after a minute he would join in with either my other two greys or my children.

This weekend is a perfect opportunity for me to test him being left alone with my other two greys whilst we food shop and ask my teeners just to remain in their rooms and observe him. I do hope he would copy my boys in just snoozing away when we are not around. We'll see, fingers-crossed. - Myrna

Fire Alert: (LOL)
Fire is getting along nicely with my two other boy greys. He sleeps soundly and has been problem-free during night time. He is clean and would do his business outside. His fluffy obsession is still a work in progress. Fire and I are training hard to lessen this fixation and hopefully be successful in being tolerant around fluffy things/animals.

I've also decided to give him three small meals a day as he seems a lot calmer in between feedings. He could also use a bit more weight as Ruth mentioned. Apart from that, he is the sweetest thing. He loves cuddles, kisses, and belly rubs. He is a big boy who thinks he's a chihuahua as he loves lying beside you and rest his head (or body) on your lap.

My boys are teaching him the life of retirement gradually as all three greys would love snoozing together as a pack and run around or investigate things in our garden. There was one funny moment with Fire. Both he and my grey Floppy were barking by the back door seeing a squirrel in the garden. Then after a while, Fire put his head on Floppy's back and still barking! Hahaha, what a character! He is still learning the routines at home but he is showing promise.

- Myrna :)

the very first thing Fire did when he came into the run for his cool down bath was grabbing the top of the shampoo bottle which is sort of shaped like a bone...he is just the loveliest boy and he did give me the top back ever so nicely when asked....loved his bath and then cooled me down by shaking himself all over me :-) xxx

Hi Nutellajar - you are more than welcome to help walk my pet greys (I have 6!) who I can bring up if you let me know when you are coming as they are covered by my own insurance. It is always disappointing for those of you who are under the age of 16 but we have to abide by our liability insurance regulations.

Many thanks to Michelle and her OH for bringing Fire training and a huge thank you and well done to Debs who was brill with him :) He worked very well, was very food orientated and quite keen to 'meet' the electronic bunny we use :) LOL He seems a very intelligent boy and was quick to realise that if he listened to Debs then he'd get a nice treat and wouldn't have to work too hard :) J xx

Fire did really well yesterday, he was a little anxious and stuck to me leg like glue.He is very very keen on treats which will help him with his training.he quickly learned that if I said leave it and he did he would get a treat.
He is a strong boy who must have been a very good greyhound and will take a little time to settle into retirement.
He has a lot of potential and at present he probably needs an owner who can spend time training him.

Michelle thank you for agreeing to bring Fire to training on Saturday I am looking forward to doing a spot of training with him under the expert eye of Julie.
Fire sounds a lively boy who needs to learn how to go from being a racer to a pet.Hopefully he will soon appreciate the benefits a retired lifestyle will bring.

Hiya I enjoyed it ... especially when Robbie got squeakier and squeakier toys out to see which ones Fire thought were tastier than my sausages ... good thing we take this training sssoooooo seriously LOL. This boy is lovely, he was very quick to realise that treats are much easier to get than fluffy toys but you do need to keep reminding him and be quick yourself :) If anyone can bring him to our 9am class on Saturday it would really help him out- Debs could handle him and you could stay with your grey too if you like :) Fire does need some work before he's able to be rehomed so please help him .. you can speak to Ruth on 0121 782 7702 or me on 0774 7754759 :) Thank you :) J xx

I want to thank Julie for coming over to the kennels yesterday afternoon to help with training for Fire. Fire is a very loving fella but so very keen with anything fluffy :-( He soon learnt that sausages were far nicer than the fluffy toys we were trying to distract him from and he soon was responding to Julie really well. If there is anyone who is willing to take Fire to the training on Saturday morning I would be really grateful. Just give me a call at the kennels. Many thanks, Ruth.
