I remember the day Max was returned to the kennels he was bewildered and the look on his face was heart rendering when his previous owners left. Then guess what the wonderful Caroline offered this big boy a most amazing home.He had come in as a reactive dog that was a bit of a handful but after much love and patience Max became the gentle giant that we all grew to know at RGT events. Caroline you must be so sad to loose your beautiful big boy and I hope can gain some comfort that you give Max a truly wonderful life. Our thoughts are with you love Debbie and Milly XXXX

HI have you thought of trying Max with a harness I am sure Julie would be able to advise on which would be best.Max is a bit like a couple of boys who have been training and they seem to be easier to manage on a harness.

by tiggersslave

Thursday 02 Aug 09:46

Hi Caroline I can only suggest that you bring him to one of the RGT training sessions which we have set up to show people how to train their greyhounds- we are all greyhound owners and very experienced in greyhound behaviour, I would agree with your trainer that your dog needs to understand basic commands first but greyhounds are very different to other breeds and that needsd to be taken into account first- to help any reactive dog you need to understand where their behaviour/reactions come from - and it's usually fear based. Punishing fear rarely if ever makes the behaviour improve, glad you stopped him. Regards Julie

Hi Caroline53, here are the details of the trainer we used to help us and Marty (sadly put to sleep yesterday due to cancer) and Misty when we were having such problems with encountering other out of control dogs. He came to the house twice and we went round all the village' hotspots'. Each session was well over an hour but he still only charged the hourly rate of £50. plus £5 petrol.

Hi Caroline53. We met up at the kennels a few weeks ago and you were telling me about Max. I'm not sure who you used as a trainer, but a few months ago Julie organised some training sessions with Jim Greenwood, just Google Jim Greenwood and his site is usually the first hit. I didn't get chance to go, but heard he was quite good. Julie, are there any plans for Jim to do any more sessions at the riding school? I'd love to bring my boy and perhaps Max could come too? Mand

Oh dear, not quite sure what to say, apart from that I'm sure you and Max will master his difficulties, but maybe this person isn't the best to help...the tree exercise sounded terrifying and you were luck that he didn't react. My goto people would be Ruth or Julie for advice, between them they are an amazing resourse to have...big hugs to you, it sounds like you had quite a morning xxxx

by caroline&Fred

Wednesday 01 Aug 11:32

Morning

Im not sure after 21/2 hrs if I have learnt anything more than I already know. He was playing mind games with Max, saying we need to teach him about recall, teaching him the down position and stay. I did say what about what you have come here for to help me with other breeds, he said lets socialise him first by learning commands. then he said we would show Max to his dog, best to measure rope so it just to short to reach his dog tie the other end to a tree so when he goes for the other dog he wont be able to reach it. I said you really don’t know greyhounds if we did that and he did go for your dog he could be at 35 mp I think it might break his neck, he turned to me and said he can run that fast . his little Lab was so calm Max acted like he does with Molly perfect so even the 15min with dog to dog was a waste of time. So I wasted £120 which I could have spent on getting his tail sorted. He said give him a call when you have done what we have talked about, next time it will only be £29. I think he would be good for working dogs / obedience he lay on the floor with his feet on the chair showing me how to get Max to go under his legs teaching the down position Ha ha really neaded to know that. Max and i are going to keep trying on our own.im still positive that we will master it together. xxxx

Poor Max has really been through it.... I am so pleased to hear he is on the mend and it totally reconfirms the need that if a dog has retained testicles they must be neutered to avoid these awful problems in the future.
Big hugs go to Caroline who is looking after him and is going to officially adopt him at the weekend hence the lovely reserved sign :-))))
To date, his operation and tests have cost the Trust over £1,500 and we are desperate to raise this money to help pay for his treatment. If you feel you can make a donation, please click the donate button on Max's profile page situated under his photo gallery! Every penny is really appreciated x

hello to you all
just to up-date you on Max. he is the most lovable boy you could ask for, clean in the house, and loves Katie. i have fallen in love with him. we had our first plus, max walked pass a little dog on the other side of the road without lunging or barking at it, isnt that great news. taking him on the Waseley walk on Sunday, hope to see you there love Caroline, Katie and Max xx

by kallie

Monday 16 Apr 20:24

hello Caroline, little Daisy is fine with other dogs and she does not bark or pull when out...one of my big boys (the one who would not have tolerated Max in the house as he is as strong as him) is not friendly with other breeds at all, i walk him muzzled at all times and often use a harness which helps control him a little better....good luck with Max, he is lovely and hopefully with your help he will get used to being walked out and about....it often seems easier not to bother when they play up but that is completely the wrong thing to do as they will never get used to being out and meeting other dogs....I am happy to hear that he is good in the house for you and hope that he settles with his walks soon.love Ina and Daisy and Rossi Toby and McKenzie. x

Hi Caroline - Max was absolutely fine with Amber (and she is small and manic!) at the kennels once he had a meet and greet and also with Charlie who belongs to Sara (he is a small lurcher). He is strong on the lead to start with on his walks but I can give you an anti-pull harness to try if you want... give me a yell if you need to x

by Foggie

Monday 16 Apr 15:45

Hi Caroline53 we have had (M)Arty for 6 weeks now and after having females before the strength and power of Marty came as a bit of a shock. He has reacted against other dogs as well, lunging and barking. He is improving though and is learning to walk by other dogs without so much fuss. The Mekuti balance harness gives more security as he is much easier to control when wearing it. I think eventually he will learn to tolerate other breeds of dog. Good luck with Max. x

by caroline&Fred

Monday 16 Apr 12:47

Hi Kallie. Max doesn't like other breeds of dogs, what is Daisy like when out walking, I can sort of understand why he wasn't taken for walks, he is very strong . I'm hoping the more he is taken out the better he will be. X

That is great news. All greys deserve a loving home, but when they are used to one and then just get dumped back at kennels, it's so much rougher on them.
I also saw Max on Monday when I chose Hammy (or did he choose me?) and he was just gorgeous.
Even better that he will have a new girlfriend, that will help him stop missing Daisy.
All's well that ends well, I hope xx

Caroline, there is nothing Max would love more than being homed with another little girl, i have his sister Daisy who he has lived with for 4 years and he is bound to miss her company. Daisy is fine as she is now with her three new brother Rossi Toby and McKenzie and she is settled so well already. i hope you can offer him a home, i was so upset to have to leave him behind xxxcuddles to you Max and licks from Daisy. xxxx

Hi Ina, Its hard when you can't take them all home, but at least you can give his sister Daisy a chance xxxx We have 2 girls and 2 boys, and they have seemed to pair off, Belle and Jasper, and Star and Sam. Even if we could take more we would have to consider the dynamics. You do so much already and you are looking out for your boys too. Hopefully Jose won't wait long and in the meantime he has all of you at Daybreaks to love and care for him xxxx

i had a few tears when i said good bye to Max as i took his little sister Daisy away from him and he looked so very sad. he is such a wonderful boy and absolutely everything i love in a hound, big black and gentle but this time i just had to make sure that i do not upset the dynamics at home by having another big boy, McKenzie would not accept that so easily. please someone out there looking for a hound, go and have a look at this lovely boy and give him the chance of a loving home, he really deserves it and will love you back a hundredfold. big higs my beauty. xxxx

Poor Max - he has been in a home since September 2008. He has been returned with Daisy (homed Feb 2008) because a family member has developed an allergy to them. He has been quite stressed back at the kennels :-(

If anyone out there is looking for a mature gent then Max is your boy.
He is a lovely friendly boy and inspite of the big upheaval in his life managed a waggy tail and lovely greeting to all who met him today.
He is house trained ,can be left, is great with other greys and people. He loves cuddles and snuggles and will make a lovely companion.
