Our gorgeous boy suffered a stroke on Friday evening, leaving him paralysed down his left side, he was unable to stand or walk, we feared the worst. Our vet gave him a chance on Saturday morning by giving him a steroid injection but wasn't hopeful and we prepared ourselves to let him go on sunday. Mystic had other ideas! By Sunday he was standing and taking a couple of steps, another vet trip and another injection. Monday he was much more stable and could get himself up off his bed, today he took himself off into the garden to do "his buisness" although a little wobbly. Moral of the story, don't underestimate the oldies and if possible and appropriate give them a chance. Love you gorgeous boy. Xxxx

Unfortunately Mystic is available for rehoming due to a change in his owners circumstances. He has been fostered by the Trust since the beginning of February and is due to have a dental which is going to be in the next few weeks.

He is great with other breeds, unfortunately not cat friendly, walks beautifully on the lead and house trained. If you would like more information just give us a call.

Hi Jen, something else very useful when things start to get better and you are more confident that the dogs are improving a baby gate across a door way, they are great. Make sure they are not gonna try and jump it tho mine never did. x

Sunday 26 Feb 07:45

Hi Jen, I found when I was cat training my dogs was to keep introducing them regularly so the dogs get used to the cats being around (muzzled and leads of course) and the water spray definately works and a loud NO or LEAVE IT. Also I used to feed my cats first and the dog could see them but could not get to them or the food, I think that had a big impact. I still do this the dogs then think the cat is higher up the pack than them. You will get there in the end Reggie will even share his bed with the cat now. I still separate cats from dogs when we are out or at night time though. Good luck with it.

Mystic & Cally surprised us today when we tried to reintroduce them to the cats. Normally when they hear the cats or see them through the window they'll bark like mad. however when we got them face-face today (whilst muzzled and on leads), Mystic just stood back looking at the cats and Cally whined and backed up as if scared. Fingers crossed that over time they be able to tolerate the cats in the house and they'll be able to have a bit more freedom around the house. Jen, Mystic & Cally x

Friday 03 Feb 20:17

Hi i was hoping some1 could give us some advice re Mystic, Cally and the cats. As some of you may be aware we have in the past had a couple of incidences where the dogs have caught 1 of the cats. However in the early days when we just had Mystic and Cally they were ok with the cats. Have we left it too long to try and train them to get along with the cats again or is there some training we can do with them? As it is at the moment we keep them completely seperate and dont let Mystic and Cally into the garden unless we know all the cats are in the house. They do still however walk past the cats while they are eating in order to get to their own food (they're fed in kitchen, cats in hall). We would like for them to have a bit more freedom around the house but as it is they bark at the cats when they see them through the glass doors. Any advice would be much appreciated. Jen. things are going well, although there have been a couple of incidents involving the cats Mystic (and Cally) are doing well. We could do with learning some training techniques to calm Mystic down when it comes to times like giving them treats, we struggle to ensure that Cally gets her fair share because Mystic pushes her out the way n grabs the treats. We dont drive and are unable to get to any of the training classes but were wondering if any1 knows of any books/dvds that we could look at to help us learn some techniques. thanx Jen, mystic & cally xx

Hi i've been using the advise that you all gave me and things are much much better and both Mystic and Cally are a lot calmer when i go into the room. Mystic has become more vocal in telling me when he wants 2 go out into garden or when he wants to play. thank u all again for the advise J, M & C xx

by jenesis

Friday 04 Mar 14:37

Hi all, thank you for all the advise, we've not had any of the full on incidences yet but we have had some not so bad occasions and at these times i've tried turning my back and ignoring them and it has worked.I will continue doing this n hopefully things will get much better very soon. In my earlier post i refered to brush although its not actually a brush its a rubber pad that fits on the palm of hand with small rubber nodules. Both Mystic and Cally are improving with the cats they ignore them when they're in the hall/kitchen but if 1 of the cats manages to get into the lounge they will try n get them but stop as soon as we say no. Thanx again for all the advice Jen, Mystic & Cally xx

Very, very important to realise that these are early days! The yelp technique combined with avoidance are the best ways to cure this problem. Mouthing is often a sign of insecurity rather than agression, therefore, avoid mouth (dog) to skin (human) contact as far as possible. If during high excitement situations Mystic mouths a hand, teach your family (and yourself) to yelp really loudly as if you have been stung by a wasp, turn your back, place your hands under your armpits and walk away. Ignore all of your dogs until they have calmed down. This may seem as if you are punishing them all for Mystic's mistake, but you need to enforce the 'calm dynamic' again which will result in an easier to manage situation. Patience, kindness and the yelp/avaoidance technique will work, but your whole family MUST understand it and use it.....good luck, Mystic is a lovely hound!!!!!

by Mand&GorgeousGeorge

Thursday 03 Mar 14:08

Happens to us too. Gent will stand very calmly with his tail wagging, waiting for you to fuss him, while Emily will charge at you and try to head-but Gent out of the way. She recently starting mouthing too, so I've adopted the ignoring technique. Like Lena, Emily will now run backwards and forwards between two rooms with a toy in her mouth ignoring us all too until she's quiet enough to handle!! Mand x

by LindaPaul

Thursday 03 Mar 09:35

Hi Jenesis. Ignoring our two until they are calm also works wonders and I don't even speak to them until they have calmed down. Also check out the comments on Lulu (page 6 at the moment) regarding greyhounds grinning. It's a little way down. Not sure if this is what you are seeing though. We have a grinner...when we come in from work, Lola can come at us with mouth wide open all teeth bared but there is no nipping with her and her tail is wagging so furiously that her body is all wriggly. Our other one Lena just grabs a toy and runs around the room. Jane's Lulu is a big grinner so you could have a read and see if you are getting some of this behaviour. Def. try the ignoring though. Linda. x

Hi
If you have children then get them to watch the Safe and Sound video that the Kennel Club promotes (www.the-kennel-club.org.uk) .. its interactive and teaches children how to be around hounds/dogs safely. Using a hound mitt might be better than a brush for the time being .. I think Ruth has them at Daybreaks, so Mystic understands that being handled/brushed won't hurt him and there'll be no accidents.
Great advice re turning your back on your dogs when they jump and folding your arms, the other thing to remember is that when doing this you mustn't speak to your dog as its trying to get your attention and even speaking/shouting counts as attention so is rewarding the (unwanted) behaviour. As a TTouch Practitioner I always look to praise the behaviour I want so when your dog stands quietly then I'd say in a low, boring tone 'Good boy/girl' so they understand that's what I want them to do and also be careful how you usually greet them ..be boring until they realise that's what you want...
Best wishes J x

Thursday 03 Mar 09:11

Hi Jenesis, yep completely agree with all the advice given so far. Our little Sadie was a jumper and barker when we first had her, unfortunately she also used to wee and poo in her excitement of seeing us - nice! So we followed Jan Fennell's advice and turned away when she jumped and completely ignored her when we came in. Then when I was good and ready (as I'm the boss allegedly), I would give them some fuss for being calm and patient. I found it more difficult with visitors because they felt it was cruel to ignore them, but they soon learnt to get over it when faced with a puddle on their shoes LOL! Good luck!

by TheBrownies

Thursday 03 Mar 07:39

Jenesis - forgot to mention also borrow and watch the Jan Fennell DVD, the first hour of it is about 4 key things, we now have completely different greys and have now got to the right 'pack order', we are looking to go back to training classes soon with Julie, as we're now pretty much organised! Think Ruth has the copy back, but we made our Ellie watch it too as you will all need to do it x x

by TheBrownies

Thursday 03 Mar 07:36

Hi Jenesis, we have the same issues with our Molly, we have to muzzle our Molly and Pip to stop them playfighting, and we also do this when we go out (when we come back we still have the jumps but they can't nip or hurt us or our 7 year old). The other thing we have found is that ignoring them totally when we come home or downstairs works, 5 minute golden time - they soon get the message and this has settled them too. We tend to turn our backs on them when they jump. We had the same concerns with Ellie but now she knows to turn her back she gets respect off them too - we will then fuss them when they have got over the whole excitement! Hopefully some of this helps, it took us some time but we seem to be getting there now, although it can still be frustrating!! x x x

Wednesday 02 Mar 21:42

hi all i'm in need of some advice. When i 1st go into the room where cally n mystic are in the morning or after i've been out of the house for a while, they both get very excited. Cally jumps up n down like she's on a trampoline and keeps catching me with her nails and Mystic barks a lot. But over the last couple of days Mystic has started snapping at my hands as if trying to bite my hands. They are only like this with me everybody else just gets waggy tails and a bit of barking. I've tried ignoring mystic until he calms down a bit and giving Cally some attention, i've also tried the other way round n ignoring cally depending on who's the calmest. i dont really have a problem with them being overexcited i just dont want mystic to actually bite, especially if he tried doing it 2 someone else especially 1 of the kids. any advice on how to try n nip this in the bud would be much appreciated thanx ps Mystic did snap (put his mouth around her arm as if 2 bite) at our 6yr old at the weekend when she tried to brush him (she may have caught his leg with the brush). Thanx Jen, Cally & Mystic xx

i have 3 greys and 8 cats and a staffie i have baby gates they havent tryrd to jump over them and it grate cause the cats have there space and the gang have there space too

by sarah

Wednesday 16 Feb 21:19

We bought a dog gate 2 prevent Toby (the dog) and George (the cat) getting into trouble ! Best investment ever, a baby gate is too low and can b jumped over, but u can get a special dog one's which are higher - just make sure that it is wide enuff 4 the gap - we got ours from argos. We have had Toby for nearly a year now and we can leave them alone in the same room when we are out without incident, but always err on the side of caution cos each animal (dog or cat) react differently, good luck x x

by jenesis

Wednesday 16 Feb 19:38

hi we were wondering if it would be a good idea 2 put a safety gate at the bottom of the stairs so that Mystic and Cally could have a bit more freedom rather than being shut in the lounge all the time. would it be enough of a barrier between them and the cats or would they just jump over the gate, obviously they'd only be able to leave the lounge when we're closeby to keep an eye on them, they pretty much ignore the cats now when we take them out 2 the gaden or when they're all being fed. J,M & C xx

by jenesis

Monday 14 Feb 09:26

Hi just want to reassure every1 that we are being careful with Mystic and the cats. We dont leave them unattended together and its only really when we're taking Mystic n Cally out into the garden and when they're all being fed they have to walk past the area where the cats are eating to get to their food. There have been some occasions where 1 of the cats has appeared in the doorway after we've checked that the coast is clear and Mystic has turned n walked back into the other room rather than walk past the cat. Other than that Mystic n Cally are getting on really well n its lovely to see them playing together in the garden, we do have to work at making sure Cally gets her fair share of the treats as Mystic would eat them all if we let him. Will be in touch in the next couple of days to sort out Mystic becoming a permanent member of the family xx

by skinnyme

Sunday 13 Feb 23:17

Totally agree, best to err on the side of caution. Treading carefully in the beginning will be better in the long run. Iris was totally fine when first introduced to the cats, now she's a little more interested! Muzzle back on when cats around and she's learning that they are very much part of the family. Never let the guard down.

Hi Jenisis, my Blossom does it too; when pleased, looking for a fuss and when excited or nervous. I looked on Youtube when I first looked into getting a Grey, there are lots of them with the same trait. It's so funny sometimes, makes me smile a lot. So I thinks its very normal, and a quirk of the breed. luv t

Mystic is settling in well, as each day goes by he gets closer and closer to becoming a permanent member of the family. Tried him and Cally 2day with the cats without them wearing their muzzles or leads and it went well will build up the length of time we do this for over next couple of days. We have noticed tho that his lips/mouth quivers a lot and we can hear his teeth chattering, does any1 know if this is normal or something to be concerned about? Jen, Mystic n Cally xxx

Mystic has been really good since being here, Cally has been like a different dog and has been full of life and much happier. Just having a catch up, could not believe my eyes Mystic you beautiful boy, you are the boy who made us fall madly in love with Greys, we visited the kennels when we were trying to decide on what type of dog to have, Mystic when he was in originaly was the first hound we met and we fell madly in love ! and decided a hound was the way forward for us ! I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times in the early days when he went to Julies training class and he was an obsolute gent, so very gentle and loving im sure his owner is heartbroken, I so wish our circumstances were different, (just had a major op) I would be up there like a shot and bring him home with us, good luck you beautiful boy hope you find yourself a lovely new home very soon, if your still there in 6 weeks, ill come and get you !! Can't stop thinking about Mr Mystic after Jude tried to 'encourage' me (with a bit of successful emotional blackmail) to take him home! Sooo, not allowed though :0(

Mystic was at Daybreaks in May 2009 and subsequently rehomed. Due to personal circumstances, his owner is no longer able to keep him and he is being returned in the next few days.

Just to let you know how Mystic is doing in his new home. He had his first night with us last night. He was brilliant with the cats. And he seems to love his new home. He slept all night with out wimpering, apart from him getting up to go to the loo at 4:00 in the morning but he is worth getting up for! It was a bit concerning he didn't go to the loo untill then but a relief when he did go. He loves his new bed and wants to please everyone!

We found a photo of him in his racing days - he will soon be back to his former glory - his fur is starting to grow back and he is putting weight on. He is a really lovely boy.
