I remember where I lived before my old friend and neighbour came to my door in tears, her border collie did not like to be left while she worked part time. On this occasion her dog had chewed her way through the sofa!! I could not believe the damage she had done in such a short amount of time. Her remedy to the problem was to buy another border collie for company. Brave lady!! lol

My Sadie was in a home briefly before we had her and the reason for her return was SA. We already had Kevin and she definately relished being in another dogs company and we didn't have half the problems we were expecting given her history of SA (we had plenty others though!), however when Kev had to go to the vets, Sadie was beside herself and messed in the kitchen, threw up, whined etc. She's much happier being with other dogs, even more so since Moo came along, so maybe that's the answer? I've said this before, but I can't recommend Jan Fennell's book 'The Dog Listener' highly enough so try and grab a copy. I do hope everything works out for Peter and his family, it must be awful for everybody at the moment. Em x

I by no means said what i said lightly as i have also had several of my dogs suffer from S.A. in fact Rossi totally destroyed my dining room furniture and in the past one of my spaniel crosses caused so much damage in a rented flat that we ended up having to pay a fortune to put it right. However i feel that if someone takes on a dog whether it is from any sort of rescue centre or a new pup or whatever they have to be aware that it is not all plain sailing and that sometimes it can take a lot of time and hard work to get the animal settled. That's all i meant when i said that it is a major commitment and all to often people want to just give up all too soon because the rosy picture in their head has not matched up with reality. i am sure that there are circumstances when a return cannot be avoided but on the other hand sometimes all it needs is extra support and training and some willingness to make it work which in Peter's case obviously is the case. i do find it distressing however when dogs to get returned for petty reasons with no obvious sign of wanting to make the relationship work in the first place. maybe it is a sign of the times that we seem to live in a throw away society and it's easier to walk away and discard something or someone than try and work at making it right. 🙁

Separation anxiety can be awful to live with, my spaniel had it (chewed kitchen table, chairs, doorframes, 2 kitchen carpets and a lino...) Buddy barked/whined/howled for just 3 nights when we had him (I think we were lucky) then for the 1 day while Charlie (my spaniel) was at the vets, Buddy chewed the kitchen door and messed in the kitchen. We were really close to re-homing Charlie, the stress of what we would find every day after work was awful, we didn't, but it was close. We made the decision to re-home Jack in preparation for Charlie's passing as we knew that Buddy wouldn't cope well on his own. I think Peter's owners are brave to admit how bad it's got and are willing to work with Ruth to try and help him. It's easy to make quick judgements about why re-homed dogs are being returned, because we love ours so much and we feel we wouldn't do it, but until you've been in that persons shoes, or know the real reason, we should be more cautious. Good luck to Peter and his family xxxx

I have been in touch by email to Peter's owners and they are really upset at the thought of returning him and I am going to give them all the help possible to help them keep him. It appears he is having awful separation anxiety and I hope to get them all through this. This can happen quite often but it is great that Pete's owners are desperate to help him even though they have had a difficult time with him.

Ade please don't worry, when we still had Monty he had to have lots of teeth out and he really was so much better after the op. we never even realized that he must have been in so much discomfort until we saw the difference in him afterwards. it's amazing but dogs can live quite easily with a lot less teeth than they were born with. i am sure milly will be just fine and she will be feeling a lot happier if her teeth are making her uncomfortable at the moment. big hug for your little girl. Peter is such a gorgeous lovely boy i can't understand why he was returned. i really do wish people would give this re-homing a bit more thought and not just do it on a whim. it's not nice for these poor dogs to be shoved about like some unwanted object because some feckless people change their minds after a while. think of it as adopting a baby, when things don't go too great once the baby is there you can't just send it back either, the commitment is exactly the same.however i am sure that we shall be able to find a good permanent home for this lovely lad in the very near future. big hugs xxx

Just been to the vets for her booster and health check up and milly has to have some teeth out under general anaesthetic - Im really worried about my little baby. But a small price to pay for my little treasure. The vet says its her big back teeth and there holes between the gum and the tooth. When the vet was prouding her gums it was ok but better to have them removed before they become a problem. Any advise would be really appreciated for my worried Daddy. xx

Zara my lovely gsd is 9 yrs old too but she has hemangiosarcoma and only has 3 months to live at the most, I dont know how any one could willingly give benny up. I feel devastated but Ruth you have inspired me to give my dog zara the best time i can as you did with lovely Lucy. Benny deserves love and security.

Benny we are so sad that you have been returned I hope you will find a forever home soon. How anyone can return a 9 year old ,it is beyond belief. Many of us have lost our dogs recently through ill health we would have been glad to see them reach that age.We know that Ruth will find you a better home soon.

What a shame, another lovely dog being returned. There seem to have been quite a few recently. I don't understand it. Be patient Peter, the right forever home is just around the corner for you. xxx from Val, Peg & Max.
