You are very welcome Nes...anytime. It's horrible when they are ill...our friends dog just got skinny very quickly and then stopped eating, they said that was her kidneys. I think if they are diagnosed early, then you can help them a bit more. Renal supplements are definitely a good idea. Take care, and keep us posted. I will ask my friend for more info and get back to you as well. Sending cuddles Suzies way. Can you get her to eat anything? Xxx

Good Morning Daybreaks, Henry here, I was too tired to post last night so I thought I'd update you on my mini break this morning. My hosts are learning quickly that I don't like to get my fawn paws dirty. They appeared quite amused that I should skip over the puddles on the tow path during our canal walk yesterday....what did they expect me to do! Also I have to ask, how many times must I move my bed into the middle of the kitchen before they realise that I don't want to sleep by the radiator....they're clearly not listening!! Not sure exactly what plans we have for today however I think they are getting the message that my preferred mode of transport is 4 wheels so hopefully a trip out will be on the cards. This will mean that if I am needed to 'interview' prospective 'forever parents' I am only a phone call away. Love to you all Henry x P.S. Just between you and me, one thing my hosts have got right is that I do enjoy my medication wrapped in a few pieces of ham......do you think they'd get me 'honey roast' or is that pushing it...LOL

Oh we wouldn't dream of taking a penny for it! We can't do any more for Evi now sadly, so it would be lovely to think there is something, however small, we can do to help another greyhound. If you wish to donate to Daybreaks, then of course that would be wonderful. I will package everything up and give it Ruth when we see her on Wednesday. I hope some of it comes in useful. We will be following Suzie's progress, so please keep us posted! xx

Thank you again Cinders for your advice. I would be glad to take you up on your offer of the renal supplements etc. that you have, but I would like to pay you for it or make a donation to Ruth for Daybreaks. I couldn't accept it otherwise as I know it's expensive. I have just collected a bag of Royal Canin renal food today to get her started and she has eaten it no problem mixed in with her burns for now, and slowly increased over the next few weeks. I think Suzie has been diagnosed quite early, so we hope we can extend her life a little bit. Thanks again for valuable advice. XX

So sorry to hear this Nes...it's really hard...we are thinking of you here and sending cuddles and licks to Suzie...a friend of mines lurcher had kidney problems...it all happened so fast...you do have to take each day as it comes, and as someones already mentioned there are special diets that you can put them on to help...obviously the bland things like rice, chicken etc are always good, and obviously plenty of cuddles but I expect she already gets those...I will ask my friend more info if you want? Do wish you all the best and thinking of you..She is a beautiful dog.Well done for giving her a fantastic home. Xxx

Hi Nes, we just lost our Evi to kidney failure. She was in quite an advanced stage when it was discovered and she was given six months absolute tops. She lasted nearly 11 months and the vet said it was undoubtedly due to the things we did. There is so much you can do - either try one of the prescription diets, or if they don't take to that (as Evi didn't) you can do your feeding of a raw diet (which again Evi refused!) or a high quality protein diet adding a phosphorous binder like ipakatene, and various supplements. We also used Lori Rose, the homeopathic vet. In fact, I researched it so thoroughly I think I could probably write a thesis on it! If you would like to talk to me, ask Ruth for my phone number and you can contact me directly - there is far too much to put on a comment here. I'm convinced that Evi's life was extended by the things we did and the vet said she was "amazing". We also still have a variety of things which are unopened, including some kidney support renal supplements, some unopened cans of kidney diet which are well in date and a couple of trays of a food which is designed for heart and kidney failure which I managed to get from a place in France which they don't do here and which was highly recommended. My husband is seeing Ruth next week at a fundraising event, we could package them all up and give them to Ruth and you could pick them up from Daybreaks? Do feel free to get in touch though, I can talk you through all the things I found out about protein, phosphorous binding etc. Oh, and give her mineral water to drink - it flushes out the toxins whereas tap water just builds up more toxins! Let me know if you would like all the stuff we have left - it's all in date and has been used up until a couple of weeks ago. x
