I know exactly what you mean I went on the Stratford on Avon greyhound walk a few months ago and somehow found myself at the front of 60 greyhounds, despite having no idea where we were going!

Injury or not, our little girl still has that racing instinct, which I realised today when - during our 2nd very wet 15 minute walk - we met a pensioner just leaving the hairdresser; After making a fuss of Rosie Po, the lady headed in the same direction home as us but on the opposite pavement. You guessed it... Rosie Po just had to win and I can confirm that our 50 meter dash felt (to me at least) that we'd beaten our previous record. As all top athletes need their rest, our little girl is now snuggled up to her Dad, both of them snoozing blissfully on her new mattress.

Well Jed is eating better than I am, he has sampled the delights of pasta, pilchards, tuna, I have even purchased him chicken (and I'm vegetarian!) Oh and he likes Brie!!! His poorly paw I think is on the mend he is not limping any more and the bandage comes off tomorrow. His mouth is still very sore but he is being incredibly brave! I just have to try and get some weight back on him and see what the blood results say they may be back tomorrow when we go to the vets, really really hope it's good news!!!

I agree with all the comments however I chose from the photo, discussions via email and a walk with him when I visited the kennel, it just felt right. I was an experienced dog owner although I had never had a greyhound but I went into greyhound ownership with my eyes wide open and was prepared to put time and effort in. I am not criticising any of those owners who have had to return dogs I'm sure it was not a decision lightly made, however these dogs are not used to homes and have a steep learning curve, I guess what I trying to say is you have to put the effort in but the rewards are fantastic and I feel that sometimes we expect too much of them too soon.

Hi muddypaws - I totally agree - it is extremely hard to tell from a photo about the nature of the dog. However, with the comments and assessment of the dogs in our care (and our foster homes) we can generally advise people if we think the greyhound will suit the home. Even with people coming along to meet their dog, we still have people return them so it is a hard one! I myself chose one from a photo and description - she was a 14 year old greyhound from Stoke and she was very difficult to start with but we got through with a lot of time and patience. The most important thing is commitment to help them settle and adjust to a new life and new circumstances and making sure it is the right thing for the dog and the family.

Sad to hear darling Snip is back...l hope she is ok. Unfortunately this comes as no great surprise to me...it just reiterates the point l wad making the other day!!! Prospective owners need to meet the dog and if possible get to know them a little.Choosing a dog from a website photo very rarely works out !! Please could we try and keep them closer to home so interested parties can visit kennels and meet them. l know good homes are hard to find and l don't know the circumstances behind Snips return, but we have been lucky so far that Snip...Poppy and Bandit have all come home safely, thankfully, but the next owner, when it does'nt work out, may not bother to return them ! This is not meant in any way as a critisism ,but better to be safe rather than sorry. Snip gets my cuddle today...and don't worry sweetheart...your forever home is just around the corner.XXX

Oh little Snip, I am so very sorry you have been returned and I am sure that it was not your fault. I met you at the kennels and you are a truly beautiful little girl (and Muddy Paws thought so too). If I was able to have another 'fix' for my greyhound addiction, it would be you but as there are already 5 (yes five) living at The Greys House, it is somewhat full already ! I hope that you find your 'forever home' soon and I know that you will give so much love and joy to your new mom and dad (whoever they may be). While you wait, I am sure you will receive the best care, attention and kisses from the hard working volunteers at the Kennels - I have sent my cuddle to you today. Good luck little girl and lots of sloppy kissess from Davey, Flynn, Millie, Nell and Pip. XXXXX and an extra sloppy one from me ! X !
