We have had Danny now almost 2 months and in that time he has twice gone upstairs and pee'd all over my bed, chewed a wooden table, a windowsill and even my wooden fire surround but not once did i ever consider taking him back. All these things can be repaired or replaced. What cannot be replaced is the love that Danny brings to us, just seeing him lying stretched out on the sofa, on his back with legs in the air showing all his manly bits, the tail wagging and excitement he shows when i come down in the morning or when i get home from work and the way his eyes almost pop out of his head each time he tries some new food (it's hilarious). Everything square or wooden is now covered in bits of cloth to try and stop the chewing lol... Hopefully we will hear what the issue was with the neighbours just purely for the fact that there are so many regular readers of the website and i know it sounds silly but you do get attached to the dogs and their story especially the long stayers and it is always so great when they finally get their own sofa and dogs being returned is sad for everyone not just the people who are returning the dogs. Chin up Ruth, tomorrow is another day and you have a great bunch of people around you for support, here's to many more happy homings in 2013. Happy New Year to everyone at Daybreaks and all the lucky owners of daybreaks greys! Now off to B&Q to buy some wood filler :p

Just wan to make a plea to any prospective dogs owners- greys or any other breed - pleeeeeeeese make sure that you realise what a commitment owning a dog is and give them time to settle & adjust to their new surroundings. Disasters we have had over the years - eating half the furniture in the house, chewing watches, shoes, plants, pulling the curtains down, peeing many times on the carpet & pulling my husband over and fracturing husbands shoulder ( not all the same dog!). Did we ever send them back? No, although we did considerbit a few times! The point is you have to be patient and give them a chance. They are not disposable, they should be your friend for life. Anyway massive thanks to Ruth & the volunteers who make it all happen, and a Happy New Year to you all. x

Such a shame. I'm absolutely gutted for Ruth and everyone at Daybreaks. Everything was all ok lunchtime when I had a sneaky look at work. Was bad enough reading the Evening Mail about BDH. Its a sad situation but if the neighbours were really that unpleasant maybe the family thought the boys would be better back where they are safe and loved. They must be feeling pretty gutted at the moment. Hopefully both will find a new home soon xx

what an awful start to the new year for these 2 dogs, having seen there pictures on facebook looking setteled and being in a home both togther it looked very promising for them . My previous dog who was a non grey , had the worst seperation anxiety , our nieghbours complained constanly about her and even posted dog buster leaftlets through the door!! but i was determined not to give up on her and after much grovling and being polite to the neighbour determination from me and my family won in the end. Did not stop me from adopting another dog " ellie-may" the look on there faces when they saw ellie was pricless! 2 days is not enough time. Good luck in the future boys and i am sure that a home either togther or separate is only around the corner for you.xxxxxx

Happy New Year to everyone at Daybreaks and to all the dogs who have found and are looking for new homes. This year is our first full year with Cookie and I adore that dog! A big thank you to everyone who has supported the sleepover and the dogs dinner - I was very proud to be part of both. There are so many brilliant people who give us their time money and sofas to help these lovely dogs- but I want to say a massive well done to Ruth, who keeps it all running and keeps a smile on her face even on the bad days - this week may not have been the best but you've helped hundreds of dogs this year - so keep your chin up lovely!

Can't believe he is back. It is a big thing for a greyhound to adapt to life in a home, but adapt they do, and very quickly, but 2 days is no time at all and does not give him any chance at all. We have recently adopted Molly who is our 5th greyhound, but they are all individuals, and she presented us, with one or two challenges we hadn't encountered before, but she only needed to be shown what is right and what isn't, how would she know? its has taken a little time but that is part of the adoption and acclimatisation process which you look back on and laugh about. I am not sure what was expected of Henry in such a short space of time and it has made me so sad as I wish we could have taken him too.

Rubie
I’m Homed
So sad to read about the recent returnees, so here's a positive post. Ruby and Olive found their forever homes with us between Christmas and New Year 3 years ago. It took Ruby some time to settle down to home life (see previous posts), but persistence paid off. She's always been a happy and quirky dog, everything is done at the double, and long may it continue. After it taking what may be a record-breaking 18 months to pass her bronze Good Citizen award, Ruby passed her gold award in early 2012. Amazingly she actually got the hang of 'stop the dog'. We still go to classes sometimes on Wednesday nights to meet the other dogs and Ruby is very chuffed to be classed as 'non-reactive' at long last. She's always been excellent with pepole and was a great ambassador for greys when we had our first hotel stay with the dogs earlier in the year. She didn't put a paw wrong and loved all the attention from the staff and other guests. However she did put a paw wrong in the summer when she managed to fall in the canal on her regular daily walk. We already knew she could swim (see previous exploits), but she fell in next to a lock when the water level was low and it was really difficult to get her out. Ruby's not averse to getting wet and loves lying down in shallow water. Unfortunately with all the recent rain she's developed a new variation on this called 'lying down in muddy puddles with my coat on.' Thank goodness all the coats are machine washable! Happy New Year to everyone at Daybreaks. See you all again at the next blood donors session. Love Ruby x x

Olive
Over the Rainbow Bridge
Olive and Ruby found their forever homes with us between Christmas and new year 3 years ago. Olive has always been nervous with people, but gets more confident all the time. She is excellent with all other dogs. Unfortunately she had a nasty accident on May Day bank holiday, when she spotted a squirrel and ran straight through a wire fence. Fortunately she had her blizzard coat on, which probably saved her from greater injury although it got ripped across her chest where she went through the upper wire, but the lower wire sliced through her front leg peeling back the skin for several inches. Fortunately there was a Pets at Home close by which had a vet working on the Bank Holiday. Dick took off his socks to make a tourniquet while I ran to get the car and we managed to get her to the vets quickly. We knew things were bad when we saw the vet's face, but fortunately he did an excellent job at stitching her. After several weeks and many trips to our own vets her leg eventually healed although she now has a 5 inch scar to show for her exploits. Thank goodness we were insured. Needless to say it hasn't made her any less interested in squirrels. Fortunately the rest of the year has been less eventful. She passed her Gold Good Citizen Award early in 2012. She's had several beach holidays and a hotel stay and has visited daybreaks a few times to give blood. Happy New Year to everyone at Daybreaks.

Just a thought, but perhaps next time we could put the neighbours in the kennels for a night, see how they like it!

It's very sad to see any dog returned to kennels for any reason and certainly it takes time for dogs to settle in a new home, me and my hubby know this only too well. All I can add to what has already been said is that if you really want things to work out you will do whatever you can to do so. With our three hounds they have all had issues that we have dealt with but we came through it. I hope all the returnees and new residents all find a loving home in 2013.

Very sad that these dogs have had this upheaval all for nothing! i saw on facebook that the reason was somwthing to do with the neighbours?? my neighbours complained regarding the noise our first hound made when we were dealing with seperation anxiety, but we kept them updated with his progress an d in the end they were helpfull in us confirming what was helping him settle! I cant see what else is a neighbours problem!! Dogs being returned so soon makes all we do as home checkers and volunteers seem pointless when the dogs are not given the chance to settle. Sad sad times for these poor babies. I get that there are some valid reasons for returning a dog but 2 days?? 🙁 When dogs go to new homes their spaces are very quickly taken by dogs who have waited their turn on the waiting list and for the boys in particular this can be months. PLEASE i urge anyone thinking of taking on a dog, think long and hard!!!!

I agree, this is so sad. So wrong for neighbours to stick their nosy beaks in too. Although I admit I'm saying that without the full story but can't understand how they could be so influential and deny these dogs and their owners the love that they all had to share with each other. Makes me so sad.

I am so very upset at having returnees but have to remind myself that they come back for a reason. The sad thing I find, is that we put a lot of time and effort into trying to help and advise people when looking around the kennels, at the home visit and before a dog is homed from Daybreaks. No one should expect a dog who has lived in a kennel environment for all of its life to adapt to home life within a few days. We offer support if there are problems or questions but if we are not asked, we cannot help. The worst thing with Santa and Henry's return today is that we did not even get a phone call to say they were being returned. We had already arranged for new arrivals and this means we are now over our capacity at the kennels. Let's hope 2013 can only get better for our beautiful dogs.

Oh my poor Buster - it must be so confusing for you when one cat lets you "play" and another is frightened of you, what are you to do? Other creatures can be quite daunting when you've not seen them before, so we just need to get you used to the outside world a bit more my poppett. Cuddles. xx
