I had the pleasure of meeting this beautiful boy last week whilst visiting Daybreaks. He rested his head in my hand for a fuss, he was just the loveliest boy ever, if only he was cat friendly! I hope he finds his forever home soon with someone who can give him the TLC, patience and unconditional love he deserves. Sweetest boy Xx

Daybreaks Diary!
I’m Homed
An absolutely non stop crazy day today. The sand run was solidly booked, as were our visitor appointments! I have come home and crashed.... I am absolutely worn out! Sadly no reservations or homings but two gorgeous new arrivals. Sadly Woody is coming back on Tuesday and Ritchie back from trial on Saturday so we have a full house and still low on volunteers because of our COVID restrictions. I had my COVID vaccination yesterday and really hoping things will get back to normal!

Samson

Lovely Samson came for a walk with me to Elmdon Park today. He's a super lad, really happy to be out and very handsome. We saw lots of dogs today and he wasn't interested in any of them. Some got a backwards glance, but that was the extent of it. He started off walking quite quickly, but lucky for him, I like a brisk walk. An hour and a half later though he had slowed down somewhat. Bless him xx

Dougie (Nidge)
I’m Homed
Well Nidge came home with us yesterday and seems to be settling in really well. No problems with our other 2 greys so far, so keeping my fingers crossed. He is proving to be a food monster though & is fixated by the fridge & the kitchen bin! He is also quite a thief, from cushions, to slippers, coats, in fact anything that’s not bolted down but he is happy to give them back to you. I think it’s what you call ‘character’. He is also trying to pull the blinds in the lounge, if anyone leaves the room, so helpful! We have also met dogs of all shapes & sizes out on our walks, only at a distance, as it’s early days. He seems to be more curious than reactive, no barking, just a little whimpering if they are off lead, as though he’s thinking ‘why can’t we join in’? He’s proving himself to be a much loved addition to the family, with a personality that is going to keep us on our toes! Ruth, Kate & Jane, thank you so much for introducing us to Nidge, sorry but I don’t think you will be getting him back other than a visit to see his Aunties!!

Over the Rainbow Bridge
Apparently it’s naughty to chase a cat that was in our garden! I spotted him, chased him and decided to jump up the fence. The hoomans didn’t see him under the hedge as he/she was well hidden. The cat ran away from me... I’m not scary am I? I can’t get over the fence though! How do these cats do it so easily! Anyway I love my hoomans even though my dinner was late again yesterday!!!! They said I was an hour early? Surely not. I’ve been giving them a lot of attention and I have worked out how to get a treat out of them. Doesn’t always work though. Stand over by the treat draw looking cute and it works most of the time. Sometimes they will say no if I’ve had enough. Which isn’t nice of them. Russ Xx

Sanka decided he really didn't want to go for a walk this morning. Jess managed to coax him for a short walk this afternoon. He is a sweet lad who needs extra help with the scary outside world. Xxx

A busy day, especially in the sand run. :)) Great to see Caesar go out on foster, do hope all goes well for him. He absolutely loved the family who have taken him. He has a Greyhound friend for company too. Xxx Thanks to everyone who donated beddding and towels and gifts, all very much appreciated. Xxx Don't forget our super Easter raffle, everone wants to get hold of the giant caterpillar! I know my little Lyra would love it! :)) Xxx All the residents had a lovely Kong stuffed with treats at bedtime again tonight. They do look forward to them and I'm sure they help the dogs to settle for the evening. 🙂 Thanks so much to Patric, Jayne and Jess for all your help today. :)) Another busy day tomorrow, including two more new arrivals! Thanks so much to Erik for his latest update on Locky. It's great to hear how his training is going. Erik also gives us all some useful tips! 🙂 It's a good thing he is a strong chap, carrying a 40Kg Greyhound down the stairs is quite a challenge! :)) Xxx

Love to Barney after his op, hope he is feeling ok, I'm sure when he is in a loving stable home he won't be so barky, it must be quite stressful being in kennels, they all show their feelings in different ways, I think you are gorgeous anyway Barney, good luck fella xxxxxx

Locky
I’m Homed
This will be a long one as I thought I need to provide some general observations about this lovely gentle giant. So far we had a couple of drives in the car and he is so relaxed in the car. Locky will initially stand when you start to drive but, he soon lies down and occasionally look out of the rear window. With a high value treat he will jump into the back of the car. As many have mentioned he is strong but I have found that he does not pull much. He can lean against you even whilst walking. He is currently a bit nervous when out and about, his tail is tucked between his legs. For now I walk him with the yellow “I need space” collar and the “nervous” lead. This will help a little with other dog owners keeping a respectful distance. Locky is a quick learner, he is so tall that he easily reaches the dinning table top. So when there is food he, of course, wants to get to it. With the help of our backs and ignoring him he soon goes away. He is now less persistent. Kitchen is out of bounds and this Thursday morning he was actually waiting and standing at the dinning room edge with the kitchen. With the help of high reward treats he is starting to respond to his name. He is great with my daughter who is 4, she is confident enough to push passed him, tell him, “NO Locky” and she knows the power of the back. He is really good with her. Charlotte (our Greyhound) has also stood her ground. This is right of course, it is her teretory. Many of the foster dogs make the mistake that they can try and take Charlottes food or treats. They soon stand corrected, no different for Locky who has experienced Charlottes passion for food. Charlotte also has her safe place, a sofa, again she does not like sharing this with other dogs. On these fronts he is also a quick learner. Where I live there are a number of foot bridges, I always kick myself for forgetting that Greyhounds may not know or been on stairs. Once I am up the bridge I think ohh S*%T will they go down. In our home, I never encourage foster dogs to go up, but if they do that is fine. It is the going down that can be the problem. The first night Locky did go up, the next morning he was not confident enough to go down himself so I had to carry 40kg of Greyhound downstairs. He is going up and down fine now. Locky is not cat friendly he does bark at them. What we did with our Charlotte (our Greyhound) is simply ignore and control her lunging behaviour. It does take time and, I mean not weeks but, many months before she became less re-active. These days she certainly will notice cats but does not lunge at the cats. This takes consistency in ignoring and being patient and persistent in that approach. For Locky that be the same with a consistent approach he will overtime become less re-active. Ohh yes Locky has had 3 wee acidents, but to be fair to Locky on two occasions he accutually warned that he needed a wee, because he was whining a little. As I was not fully aware of his method of warning I ignored it. I jokingly said to my wife that Locky should have a different pitched whine for when he needs a wee and one for when he wants something different ???? but that is probably wishful thinking. This is a good example of being patient and being aware of their behaviour patterns. This Friday morning he actually came upstairs to wake us up because he wanted a wee. This is great as it helps to prevent accidents, it is actually really nice to have such a happy face waking you up, brilliant Locky. When I walk Locky, people usually say, He is BIIIIG!!!. One lady told me that she “wanted to say that he is a nice little boy but he is not little at all”. They also quickly notice that he is so friendly and kind. Statements I fully agree with and whoever, will have Locky will have a loving, kind addition to their family. He is just adorable.
