Boo (Lou)

female, 14 years old, Brindle and White

Added by DaybreaksRuth

Updated: Thursday 11 Jan

This little girl arrived today from Ireland where she has been waiting for her forever home for a year. She is a little nervous at the moment and we are told she would best suit a family who are at home for most of the day.

Boo (Lou) has had 0 cuddles today (14 all together).
If you register or login, you can give her a cuddle too!

So lovely to meet you earlier (we chatted at the end about Staffies!)
I would suggest 1 of those thin vest/coat things as below....it would help let people know that Boo is nervous and they may call their dog off / lead them.

Did you know about this?

Hi, I have got a hi-viz coat for Honey (which I have to say she is ashamed to wear!) but it says quite clearly on it "nervous dog - please keep your dog away" it is as though she actually knows what it say!!!!

I would also suggest carrying in your pocket (and I know it is difficult) but a plastic bottle full of water to throw over any dog that comes charging towards you. I have only met one dog owner who actually appreciated that Honey was petrified when a loose dog charges towards her and happily put his dog on a lead. You usually get the standard "my dog won't hurt your dog" - they seem to totally miss the point - my Honey is having major heart palpitations!

I have started taking Honey to a mixed dog class with Sally Rapson in Sutton Coldfield on a Tuesday and she is getting a bit braver with a couple of very bouncy springer spaniels even when they are off lead doing recalls and I am hoping this will give her a bit more confidence to see that not all dogs off lead are going to charge at her - she has in the past had labradors charge at her and a dalmatian actually bit her behind after she had walked past him on the beach. It is very difficult to help them recover their confidence after incidents like that but over time she is getting a bit better.

We've had Boo with us for nearly 6 weeks now and all going well. We've managed to sort the sliding on the floors, the crying at night etc. She's so affectionate and a joy to have. We just need some pointers in one area.... She's great on the lead but is completely terrified if a dog not on a lead approaches her (and I mean completely terrified) - she's had bad experiences with other dogs in the past but I hate to see her so frightened and don't want her to miss out on days out etc - any tips would be really appreciated.

We really do need to educate our friends over the sea so that they can appreciate what wonderful pets these hounds make a year in Ireland waiting a home but only a few days at Daybreaks. Fabulous for Lou but it is so sad the number of hounds over there waiting for a home or who don't even get the chance.Lou you are in for a lovely life.
