Lost Dogs - What to do when you lose your dog

Steps to take

i)     If your dog is lost or has escaped please immediately ring one of the following Daybreaks Trust numbers until you speak to someone and leave your mobile no with them – they will help co-ordinate the searchers too.

0121 782 7702   07985 164493

07930 256123    07814 566657

07587 133553    07747 754759

ii) Let us know if your Grey is nervous or confident, will they approach strangers, are they wearing an ID disc with current details?

iii) Go out searching with another Greyhound if possible, take a lead, collar, smelly treats and a charged mobile phone. Be safe -try not to go alone or tell a friend.

iv) Do you always walk your Grey the same route? Walk the route again checking gardens etc in case your Grey is trying to get home.

v) If your dog is sighted then immediately ring the co-ordinator (see i), note the time and place the Grey was seen and what direction they were heading in, are there any local parks etc they could get to?

vi) Print/write A4 notices with a brief description of your Grey- colour, collar, sex, say don’t approach or chase (on bikes) but ring you or the numbers at (i) immediately. Put it where your Grey has been seen - in parks, in shops and on roads

vii) Also notify local vets, postmen, school crossings, cafes, the Dog Warden, Dog Lost (they will circulate posters for you too), Animal House- speak to people, don’t leave messages. Call back in opening hours for Dog Wardens, some Councils sub-contract Dog Warden duties to private companies- speak to them too, leave yours and our numbers with them as contacts.

viii) Greyhounds will rarely come to a stranger calling them, keep helpers to a minimum and ask they to simply walk with their Greyhound and check bushes, etc.

viiii) If sees your Grey they should NOT chase it but if possible follow at a distance without frightening it and see where it is heading.  Immediately ring you/the kennels and you should go out to search.

x) We will set up a dedicated Lost Dog Facebook page which can be updated with sightings information but any extraneous comments will be deleted/not be approved so we can concentrate on searching for your dog. Ask people to say where they have been searching, what date/time etc so that can be plotted too.
