Hi Guys, Back again with a quick question as you are all so helpful...

I've been giving our Trevor supplements to help his coat get smooth and it looks beautiful now, But he has a bare ass!!! In fact, he has had this since we got him, Is this normal? for Black Greys to have a bare ass as I notice a few others have the same? (our previous Grey 'Steve' was fawn) Is there something I can do to get that hair growing? Don't get me wrong, it doesn't really matter to us, I'm just wondering if there's something I can do.

Thanks for you help!!

Hi

Thankyou for your comments, I guessed as much with the retractable lead thing, I didn't know weather the views of Greyhound owners had changed. Clearly not which is good to know.

I going to try and find a secure field!

Thanks

Graeme

Hi Graeme
like DuleekDandy has suggested,we use a long training lead with a harness to allow some more freedom for our 2 girls. I personally wouldn't ever use a long lead/line retractable or otherwise with a collar - the risk is too great.
Using the top harness point and training line, you can then practice your recall quite easily. They don't really get tangled up this way (unless you have a spinner like one of our 2 and we can see the spins coming now and take action!).The training lines are easy to come by and come in various lengths with a clip on one end and a hand loop at the other. Horse lunge lines are OK and we have used these also, but the clips tend to be quite heavy.
Good luck :-)

Hi Graeme, so pleased he is doing so well!

Retractable leads are not really a good idea with a collar as the Greys can reach such high speeds in seconds & could potentially break their necks if they do take off for any reason.
I have heard some people say that they use them with a harness.
Other people say retractables are just dangerous - full stop....they can cause injuries to legs - yours or the dogs or get caught up in things.

Maybe a long training lead with a harness if anything.
How about trying to find a secure field you could use? (Some people use tennis courts)

Hope that helps a bit. x

Hi Graeme, so pleased to hear Trevor is doing so well. Personally I would never use a retractable lead on a Greyhound. They can reach speeds of up to 40mph in just a few seconds and could suffer serious neck injury if they reach the end of the extending lead at top speed. Also if you let go of the lead a Greyhound with an extending lead attached could get caught in anything or end up entangled in the lead. If you have a local enclosed field, basket ball court or tennis court you could use these to practise recall. The training sessions all help with recall too. Xxx

Hi, Just a quick msg to say how well Trevor is doing!

We feel so privileged to own such a great Greyhound.

Do any of you guys use retractable leads? Are they any good or are they dangerous?

I don't want to let him loose as I want him to be safe, But I do want to train him recall and give him a little more freedom. Do you guys think these leads are ok?

Help Appreciated

Graeme

Hi Graeme, we have one of Bobby's other brothers Skip and I totally agree with Champs Mum, having a great home, regular grooming and oily fish will all help. It does take a few weeks but you will have a handsome black swan in no time! (Mary, what a lovely way to describe beautiful black greyhounds!) Xxx

Hi Graeme, we had similar with his brother Champ. He has a daily ration of evening primrose oil (one of our labs has it as she has an awful grass allergy so thought we would give it a try), lots of grooming and sardines. He has gone from a tufty to a lovely sleek black greyhound. He still gets occasional scurfy moments but it tends to happen when he is a little bit stressy so we just let him have a few treats, lots of cuddles and strokes to help him relax. I could never have imagined that he would be so handsome. You'll see a big difference over the next few weeks as he gets used to his new home and finds his place and chills. I used to get a bit embarrassed taking Champ to kennels etc as he looked so scruffy compared to the other visitors - I was always worried about his coat and apologising but it is honestly just a question of time until the (black) swan appears :).

Hi Graeme
we use Yumega oil for our girls' skin and coats. It's widely available in places like Pets at Home or on the internet and I do believe Ruth sells it at the kennels. It's good for skin and coats and is balanced for Omega 3 & 6. It's only a teaspoon am & pm in their meals. You can read more at
http://www.lintbells.com/products/yumega-dog
Our girls are both black and have lovely shiny coats.
In the summer we use the Yumega Plus formula as Lola seems to get seasonal itchyness and starting it early this year seems to have really done the trick.
I'm sure Trevor's coat will improve over time in any case, but this would give it a boost.
Very best of luck with your boy - I love his ears in those photos :-).
Linda.

Greyhound 'Dave' became Greyhound 'Trevor' after many discussions over his name this weekend.

Looking for a bit of advice from any of you guys. Trevor's coat is quite patchy in parts and I'm wondering if anyone has any special secret's to fix this. I've been adding in fish oil into his food but just curious if there's anything else worth a try?

Help is greatly recieved. (just looking to do the best I can for him:)

Thanks!

Bobby aka 'Greyhound Dave' has settled in nicely. Played some ball with the kids yesterday, found his very own sofa in our living room and watched the TV with the family. He is such a lovely dog. No problems overnight, he slept on a duvet in our room. We are blessed to have him and we will give him the best life!!

Hi Graham and Sarah, Bobby was a little restless last night but fine with the storm this morning, didn't take much notice of the thunder. He came up the stairs a couple of times and managed to find his way down again quietly easily. He is now back at the kennels ready and waiting to go off to his new home with you! Xxx
