Thank you so much to everybody for your kind words and genuine concern, we have been really touched by every single post. We know most of you have been in similar situations, and making that awful decision to let our beloved boys and girls go is never easy, but it is the ultimate act of love we can give them. Most of you lovely people don't know us or Jack, however, you have all taken the time to let us know you care, and for that we will be eternally grateful, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Loveheart, your poem is beautiful and very true I'm sure. Our boy may be gone, but he will always be in our hearts. Xxxxxxx

Shani I think this is what Jack would say to you -----
You knew when it was time to let me go,
So I could run free again, even though I loved you so.
You know I will be waiting for you however long,
And when the time came I just knew you would be strong.
I could just lay down with my head in your lap
Then I wouldn't be frightened, I could just take a nap.
I could dream of the days that we had, of the love that we shared
I was a lucky one, I found someone who cared
God Bless, your boy will always be with you xx

We had to make your decision with 3 of our Greys over a 7 month period so I feel your pain, as do all of the people at Daybreaks and on this dairy who have loved and lost a hound.x

I know how hard it is to see them so poorly and slipping away from you and his heartbreaking it is to make the decision to say goodbye. With a very heavy heart, I have to let you know that yesterday we said goodbye to our beautiful brave boy Jack. He hadn't made any progress for over a week, the stroke was just too massive for his body to recover, I will spare you the details but it was a decision we had to make, we couldn't see our beautiful boy like that any longer, and now he is at peace. Jack you brought so much fun and happiness into our lives, with your crazy mad ways, that tail that never stopped wagging and your sweet nature, we will always love you to the moon and back, now run, bounce and barge your way over that bridge, heaven has gained a very special angel. We love you so very much my sweetheart, thankyou for being our boy. Love Momma, Pops and Dexter xxxxx

Hi Nicky, the news is not good I'm afraid, the stroke that Jack suffered was caused by a disk in his neck which had crumbled and punctured his spinal cord causing the blockage which caused the stroke, because it is near his neck the after effects are severe. He still cannot stand unaided and is very low. I have spoken with the vert this morning and he says with this kind of stroke the recovery usually picks up after 2 weeks but there has been no progress from Jack this week, he says if Jack is unable to support his weight within the next 2 weeks then it is unlikely that he will, and we should think about his quality of life. Jack's mood is very low and he is very frustrated which isn't helping his recovery, and we may need to assess the situation sooner. We are devastated for our boy but are still hoping and praying he starts to show some progress very soon, thank you for thinking about him, it means so much to us that so many people are rooting for him. I've sent Jack a hug and hope that he will soon be back to full strength. Our previous dog spent a very long (for us anyway) weekend at the vets after having a tumour removed and we couldn't wait to bring her home. As soon as she arrived home she went straight to bed and seemed to move on from the horrible experience much better than we did!

Hi Kate, after what has been a difficult weekend for us emotionally, I have spoken with the vet this morning. He says Jack had made more progress this weekend in how he is placing his feet (still supported). We went to see him Saturday and he seemed quite down, we tried to be positive but I think he picked up on our mood bless him, he seemed better on Sunday when we went, he is eating well but when the nurse and Ken carried him outside to see his progress I was shocked to see how thin he has become, he's a bag of bones, it's awful to see, the nurse and vet today explained that this is muscle he has lost and is normal and will return when or if he becomes mobile. He assured me Jack is going in the right direction and is doing really well after such a short time, we just want our boy back, we have to be positive for Jack's sake but honestly sometimes the enormity of it overwhelmes me. On a more positive note we can take Dexter to see him on Saturday, they will put him in one of the big consulting rooms so they have got plenty of space, we are all sure it will be wonderful for both dogs as they are really missing one another. The nurse did say that all the nurses are in love with Jack and even the Receptionist comes in every morning to see him, which is lovely for us to hear. Thank you for thinking about him, we really appreciate it Kate xxxxxxx

Just thought some of you might like a Jack update. We went to see him last night, and he looked so much brighter than Sunday. His diarrhoea is finally under control and he started to eat yesterday too. We took him some roast beef (my husband had to have cheese on his sandwiches instead) and he absolutely loved it, then he ate some tuna and rice, we are now hoping that he starts to pick up and gain some strength, helping him with his physio. The nurses carried him outside in his harness today and he did a big wee on his own which is fantastic progress. His left side is quite strong but it's the right side especially the front which is still weak, but he is doing great and getting a little stronger every day, the nurses are all in love with him but they say he is a bit lazy!!!!!, (whoever heard of a lazy greyhound). He was so contented after seeing us and eating his roast beef, he promptly fell asleep lol.
It's slow progress but he's doing great, we have told him to get his act together and get well because we miss him and need him at home xxxxxx

I had been thinking about your boy so was pleased to read your update that there has been some progress for Jack. I’m guessing these things take time so I’m keeping everything crossed for him. Come on Jack, we are all rooting for you xxxx

Your visit will be the best medicine for Jack I am sure. As soon as we got our boy home after his amputation although it was a lot of commitment from us (I slept down stairs with him for 2 weeks) he seemed to know we where right there at his side and would do whatever it took to get him back on his feet and started to improve daily. We had another 3 1/2 great years with him when the vet was skeptical at 12 months. I really hope you are as lucky as we where, it sounds as though he is in the best care and fingers (and toes) crossed his recovery has started. Love to you and Jack x

We have had an update on Jack today, the vet says there has been some progress, only small but it has given us a bit of hope, he has got some feeling in his left legs but the right are still very weak because that's where the stroke affected the most, he is still not eating and still has chronic diarrhoea which they are trying hard to control, they have had him outside today in the shade which seems to perk him up they are working hard on his physio every 3 hours, they are so good with him I think the nurse at the weekend was a bit smitten with him!!!. We are going to visit him tomorrow afternoon and they are going to take him outside and show us what they are doing physio wise with him, I hope our visit cheers him up as he is understandably quite down, we hope this marks the beginning of his recovery because we need our boy well and at home with us and his brother where he belongs, thank you all so much for your kind words, it really means a lot to us. He has brought so much joy into our lives and he and his brother Dexter love each other so much, they hate to be apart from one another. Just thought I would give an update on our lovely boy Jack. As I said in an earlier post we discovered that Jack was in the early stages of Renal failure, so we started him on the Renal special diet, that was over 3 month ago. Well, we got Jack's latest blood results back on Wednesday and his level has now dropped to that of a normal dog of his age just by feeding him the Renal food, we are amazed and so happy. I'm just telling you this incase somebody else has got a dog who is going through the same thing, we caught Jack's disease in the very early stages by accident really, so I I don't know if this made a difference but it is worth a try feeding them the special diet. We are overjoyed that we will now get to see our precious boy live a full and happy life. Happy days xxxx

Hi Kate, Happy New Year to you and all at Daybreaks, well Jack is doing absolutely fine thank you. He has been on the Purina Renal biscuits and wet food for just over a month now, and he is even more bouncy & crazy than normal, it says on the label that it gives them a new lease of life, well he's certainly a very happy lively chap I can tell you!!!, but we wouldn't want him any other way. Thank you so much for asking about him, it means a lot to us. Hopefully we will be bringing the boys in for a pamper session probably at the beginning of March (Jack doesn't like being bathed so that will please him), so hope to see you and all the lovely hounds then xxxx

Likes his new chum Murphy (another Grey), the humans all loved him. Off for another walk in 10 mins then he will sleep all evening.

Just a quick update on James (who is now called Jack). Oh my, he is absolutely wonderful, such a good boy who took about 20 mins to settle into his new home. He and his new brother Dexter (greyhound) get along fine, few grumbles (from Dexter) but nothing Jack cares about, he just ignore s him so Dexter just walks away which is funny. He had a fantastic first night, no problems, he loves his beds, good and walks and is going for a nice long walk then a coffee with 3 more Greys this morning. Happy days xx

I had the pleasure of walking James today. He is a very handsome boy who likes to get going, after all there is a big post racing world out there and he wants to see it.His initial haste however soon became a nice stroll up the lane in true greyhound style enjoying the autumn sunshine.I do hope you find your forever family soon as you are sure to make a super pet for some lucky people Axx

Walked James this morning. What a handsome boy he is. A bit strong on the lead at first but calmed down quickly. Sure he will be going off to a new sofa soon.
