Dear Jeremy and Julie, I have been reading through the many comments about Casey....they brought back memories of when he first arrived at the kennels and how he found his forever home with you. Xxx
Your words convey how devoted you were to him and how very much you loved him. He was a special lad. Xxx God Bless your Casey. When the time comes, I know he will run as fast as he can to see you again.
Lots of love Kate Xxx.

Casey left us on Tuesday 19th December and we have been heartbroken since.
Who would have guessed that a ‘problem’ hound who came to stay for two nights over Easter, would have turned out to be my best pal and the centre of our lives for the best part of seven years!
Casey was a lovely soul who knew what he wanted and it was our privilege to give him a devoted, loving home.
They say that when we die, the first thing we see is our dead pets running to greet us! I suspect that when my time comes, I’ll have to wait for Casey to finish his kip and then wonder over. That’s the way he did things and one of the reasons why we loved him so much.
See you on the other side Pal!

Aah poor Casey. Totally agree with you though. Our Cilla had most of her teeth removed a few months ago & the change in her has been massive. Much better eating & all round happier. It's such a shame that they feel so awful without us knowing.
Thankfully we haven't had to endure your other problem!

Casey had 7 teeth removed a few weeks ago and hasn’t stopped eating since. His appetite has been hit or miss since he’s been squatting here for the last 4 years (he only came to stay for 2 nights remember). I can’t help but think that he may have had trouble with his teeth for all that time. Nothing was obvious, and he had regular checkups but the turnaround in his appetite is amazing.
It’s great to see him enjoying his food but he does tend to contaminate the air supply from time to time.

Another birthday for our Casey. He has really enjoyed the extra company over the past 6 months while we’ve been at home although must be one of the most spoiled hounds around.
After opening his presents first thing this morning, Sir has had a relaxing day while I’ve been slaving away preparing his birthday feast! In addition to his usual roasted half chicken, todays meal included lamb kidney, meatballs and cheese. All despatched rapidly.
Happy birthday Pal.

After living with us for nearly 3 years, Casey has decided to explore upstairs! Julie came home to find the spare bed in a mess and covered in paw prints. Of course, Sir had returned to his own bed by then as if he had been kipping there all day long.
On Saturday we returned home earlier than normal and caught him red handed, making the best of his newly discovered bed - he's only got 3 others dotted around downstairs so clearly felt the need to find another! Naughty hound.

This time last year, Casey (along with Benny and Foxy) was working as a therapy hound at HMP Littlehey. We have a set of his daily journals from his time in the prison which detailed his activity and food consumed. In the notes for Christmas Day 2016, the comment just said “Given Chew”.
This Christmas is going to be so different for him - his presents are already stacking up, he’s going to enjoy all of the company over the next week and he is truly loved by us and our family.
I really hope that some of our Christmas volunteers join us in the Failed Foster Parent club and give these hounds the life they deserve.

We took Casey for his first holiday last week and we all had a thoroughly enjoyable week in Cornwall. He loved his first trip to the beach although used all of his greyhound speed to avoid the waves. We spent so much time out and about, seeing new sights and smells and then sleeping very well at night. It was great to see him enjoying himself so much.
A Google search for ‘dog friendly accommodation’ yielded a long list but we really struck lucky with South Forda Park near Bude. I would highly recommend South Forda as a base for exploring the North Cornwall coast with your hound. The accommodation is great and there are 9 acres of beautiful country side to explore within the estate. It’s beautifully quiet but only a short drive to the local village and 5 miles to one of the best beaches we’ve been to. The owners are a lovely couple who can’t do enough to help and are also considering adopting a greyhound! We will certainly be going back next year.

Jembob it was lovely seeing Casey so happy to be with you and so settled. That is worth far more than any rosette or certificate and is exactly why we do what we do to help greyhounds get to this point. You've done such a good job with him and he was so close yesterday. You'll get that Bronze and Silver and Gold I've absolutely no doubt. Our Lena who ended up in the Obreedience team at Crufts 2016 had 3 attempts at Bronze so hold onto that thought!
Love from Linda & Peggy. X

It was a pleasure and delight to work with you all and see the great improvement in Casey. My own vet always says if a vet can't diagnose the problem then have your dog checked by a chiropractor or osteopath - in my experience that usually finds the problem and my vet also does chiropractic manipulation so I trust him to follow his advice. Our dogs are athletes so can carry an old injury or just the accumulation of a hard career as a race dog so the more we can ease the effects of this the better our dogs will feel and hopefully will avoid many of the problems of old age such as arthritis. Wendy is a McTimoney chiropractor in Bromsgrove and has treated many Greyhounds as well as other breeds :) My vet also recommends raw food as the natural food of dogs, I started feeding raw as he treated one of my dogs for an aggressive malignant tumour and that was a huge part of his successful treatment :) . As has been said - our dogs aren't used to being disturbed when sleeping so we always recommend you call your dog to you rather than risk startling them :) Brilliant to see the very happy Casey at training class, thanks again to Ruth, Jo from Head Office who agreed to let us work with Casey and of course Jembob and Julie :) x

Fantastic report from Jembob as it clearly highlights the highs and lows we can experience when these beauties come into our lives. The best advice we were given when adopting our first furbaby was provided by Kate..."have time & patience as it's a learning curve for you all"... and that's stayed with us. Casey, you and your lovely family are very lucky to have found each other and we wish you oodles of happiness together. Big hugs xxxx

Sounds like the perfect people have adopted Casey, they all have little hangups and our grey Dexter hates other dogs but after 4 years we figure he's not gonna change now, but he's much better than he used to be, and he used to growl if you went near his bed, now I can lie with him and do anything to him and he just loves the attention. It is so rewarding watching them grow in confidence in your care and become happy healthy hounds. Casey is a very lucky boy to have such fantastic owners. Keep up the good work xxxx

It's been a pleasure watching Casey develop in recent weeks. We still have plenty of work to do with him but he has come on so well. We have to send massive thanks to Kate, Ruth, Julie S and Christian at Fivelands.
Many of you may know that Casey came to Daybreaks after 10 months at HMP Littlehey - we have his notes from the prison and it was clear that they had taken great care of him. However, we was not a well dog and was suffering from a very unpleasant infection among other things. He was also very thin and a bit miserable. We had spent some time with him in his kennel and something in his eyes made us believe that he was a very nice hound but really quite unhappy.
We orginally offered to take him home for 3 days over Easter and it was only then that we realised that he had a couple of quite aggressive habits which worried us and seemed to get worse. With the help of those mentioned above, we exhausted all possible casuses of his behaviour with a view to improving his quality of life. Whatever we did has resulted in a much, much happier hound, but we believe that two things in particular have made a huge difference to him:
At the suggestion of Julie S we have introduced raw food into his diet. From his prison records we could see that Casey had not eaten well for 12 months. Since starting with raw, his appetite has gone through the roof and he is filling out again into an impressive specimen. It's such a relief to see him getting stuck into everything we give him.
The second suggestion from Julie was to take Casey to see a chiropractor to make sure he was free of pain. We took him to see a very nice lady called Wendy Lymer who treated him on two visits. We observed a massive improvement in Casey on both occasions and suspect that he had been in discomfort for a long time. He appeared to have had some issues with his jaw and neck. The change in Casey after such a short period of time as a result of Wendy's treatment has been nothing short of remarkable. I would absolutely recommend Wendy check out any hound as even the most minute of adjustments can make a big difference to general well being.
So now we have adopted a happy, healthy hound. Despite our best efforts he would still like to maul other breeds and we still can't go anywhere near him while he's on his bed. Apart from that he's our perfect hound!

Casey's latest blood test results show that his muscles enzymes are back to normal. For a greyhound, the normal range for creatine kinase reading is 20-225 - back in March Casey had a count of over 7,000!

We have Casey's latest blood test results and they all look promising. The levels that were excessively high are returning to normal and everything else is stable. All good news.
He is, of course, being spoiled rotten. Last week he took delivery of a new t-shirt and cool coat and looks very smart in both.
We are also having fun with training - he's doing very well, responds to a few important commands and is learning to deal with other breeds while out walking. He's come a very long way in only 6 weeks.

Casey took us to the Evesham walk on Sunday. It was a most enjoyable morning out and I would encourage other hounds to take their families along to these regular events. Casey clearly benefitted from spending time with other hounds again, although he didn’t get to sample any of the lovely lemon cake that was available at the end. ?
As with many hounds that are just learning about the outside world, Casey enjoys new experiences and is very curious about most things. It was interesting to see how he reacted to other breeds of dog while in a pack of hounds – much calmer than normal so I suspect that we are the ones who need more training, not him!
Back home, Sir spent much of the afternoon sleeping or rolling around on the back lawn. Special treat was some left over beef cheek from our dinner. Lucky hound!

We took Casey to the Saturday morning training class. He was a bit overwhelmed by it all but very well behaved indeed and we came away with some really good ideas for training Casey. The class itself is good fun and contains so much good information about greyhound behaviour even though our hounds don’t seem to make the best students. I’ve already made good progress with Casey using some of Julie’s advice and we are going to continue attending the courses. I would really recommend the class to any greyhound owner who can get to Maypole on a Saturday morning.

Better still be ready to get your tongue in the pot first then they won't want it and you will get the lot. Sausages are made for houndies, just do the intense stare until they are yours. So pleased your having a great time training your humans xx

Yoghurt pot licking duties is what greyhound tongues were made for isn't it Casey! As for the sausages, you're making sure they're cooked just right! I trust you're chief taste tester also. Enjoy xxxx

Casey has assumed responsibilities for licking empty yoghurt pots and being a nuisance in the kitchen whenever sausages are cooking.

Casey has been such a good hound. He has stayed at home on his own during the day and is impeccably behaved.
Christian at Fivelands has been brilliant and is helping to work through a few of Casey's health issues. We are all doing our very best for this wonderful hound.
I do envy his lifestyle though! Sleep, go for a walk and eat. Repeat.

Shani. He's doing great thanks. It's lovely to have a dog in the house again. We've left him at home a couple of times while we've been out and he's been fine - we get a great welcome from him when we get home too. He's getting cheekier by the day and has began to work out what happens in the kitchen!

Well, Casey has been here for three days and it is quite clear that he is not prepared to return to kennels. He really is a smashing little chap and has settled in so well. He makes us laugh and we have even now got used to his late night werewolfing so we have decided to foster him and if he can adapt to be spolied rotten all of the time, it might turn into something long term!

After Casey had made it clear that we had to go to bed early last night, he slept all the way through. By 10 o'clock he had decided that we were no longer required and were both 'encouraged' to leave him in peace!
A meals have been demolished and we had a very good, long walk over the park this morning.
It looks like being a dismal day so we are going to have a quiet afternoon with Easter eggs and live football.

Casey has come to stay with us for the Easter weekend. We are both fond of him and thought he would enjoy some time away from kennels. So far he has been fantastic.
He spent most of the afternoon sun bathing in the back garden. You could tell that he was really enjoying the fresh air and warmth. A light lunch of tuna/rice/egg was consumed at record speed, followed by …… another kip in the sunshine.
After every inch of the garden had been explored we headed out to the woods. A thoroughly enjoyable experience for us both. Back at home, Casey had another kip on his bed.
After Sir had woken it was time for tea, which was consumed even faster than lunch. Then it was time for another kip while watching the footy results. A short break to watch me making focaccia ended with Casey returning to bed. He is snoring while I type this!
What a lovely, lovely hound he is. He’s already let us know what he does and doesn’t like and we are all going to enjoy his time with us here.

What a fantastic boy at Crufts yesterday, he took it all in his stride and was fab with all breeds, his handler for the day did extremely well as he had to take Casey into the ring to represent Perry Barr dogs as part of RGT parade "let's here it for the boys" (please watch the sing and video on the main RGT page to hear the song) which was filmed for TV. Well done all. X
