Lucy slipped away very peacefully on the window seat in Ruth and Rob’s front room (where Ruth had spent the night cuddling her). Thank you to Thomas our vet from Fiveland’s who was so compassionate and helped her on her way. Thank you to Donna, Fiveland’s Head Nurse who treated Lucy so gently. We took her to the Crematorium in Meriden. She looked so elegant lying on the blanket in the back of the car with the beautiful pink rose which Ruth had bought her, for her final journey. Sleep tight beautiful one at least you had your final few weeks as a pet with Ruth and Robbie and was loved to bits. My heart is breaking for you.

In pain no more

What lovely pictures of Lucy and everyone on the walk. Lovely to have the beautiful sunshine this week. Although I didnt meet Lucy, the pictures and all of the updates made me feel very sad but at the same time makes me feel even more determined to spread the word to everyone about how lovely greyhounds are and that they go through so much in their lives when racing that they deserve to be a pet and looked after so well.

Sending best wishes to everyone that has looked after Lucy and thinking of Lucy today.

I met lucy at the Waseley Hills walk recently such a beautiful girl and oh so brave.

Ruth you are an inspiration to us all.

Lucy has had your unconditional love these past days. She has had the touch of kind hands and devotion from your loving caring heart. Lucy couldn't have asked for more.

'Sleep tight lucy, run free like the wind, in a place free from pain, where there is no rain only warm sunlight, you have earned your wings sweet girl, sleep tight. X X X

I keep feeling terribly sad and then terribly happy for Lucy in equal measures. Such a sweet thing, you'd never know from the photos just how poorly she really is. I only hope I will be brave enough to make the right decision for my greys when their time comes. I have to say I have been hugging them just a little bit tighter this week whilst counting my blessings. Lucy and all the wonderful people making her last days so special are in my thoughts and prayers, God bless you all. Em xxx

We had an outing today and I took Lucy to Lapworth (along with Foxy & my friends Zoe & Steve & their hounds Bobby & Chic and kennel dogs Hannah and Diva), and walked her along the canal by the locks. There was a section where there was temporary fencing (as they are doing repairs to the canal) so Steve let her off the lead and she ran to me and Zoe with arms wide open!!!!!! Wow, I can see why she did so many races - she loved her run and it was great to give her freedom off the lead!

We then went to the Bulls Head in Earlswood where she was allowed in and she enjoyed a bit of cheesy garlic pizza bread! She is now snoozing downstairs after an exciting day - & she finished the last of her luxury sausages (thanks Kate!)

I have given her loads of cuddles but cried buckets when she is not looking - my heart is breaking but I know we are doing the right thing for her tomorrow which is the most important.

Hello Leanne, thank you for the most wonderful post for Lucy. It is touching and beautiful. I am going to use this in the Grapevine to celebrate her life.

I took her over Elmdon Park today along with Zoe and Steve and we had a lovely time. She LOVED the ducks and small fluffy dogs but didn't want to walk back up the hill.... no way was she moving..... so she had a lift from Steve! I've attached some photos x

Lucy was her name, racing was her game, 160 races later her owner said ‘see you later’, fate brought her to Ruth and Rob, who have done a marvellous job, she has visited parks and walked over hills, eaten so much her tummy is filled she has watched the ducks saw the sun and had so much fun, never has she been so happy.

Now the time has come to say goodbye, there wont be a dry eye, when you take your last breath onto rainbow bridge, your fellow Greys will be waiting to run with you over the clouds, fuelled by the love that you have been shown, a place one day we will all meet, a place that has no pain and is full of peace to become an angel of the sky.
Goodbye Lucy, sweet dreams xx

Lots of love

I know what a wonderful week Lucy will have and what a tough week Rob and Ruth will have. We had to make a similar decision last spring to let our adored lurcher Sooby slip away when her tumor became intrusive for her. We spent a memorable weekend with her in the May sunshine and set her free to rainbow bridge on the Sunday evening. It was peaceful for her and we knew it was the right time. Lucy's life is full of love and happiness right now and she couldn't ask for more than that. My thoughts are with you all. Love Cath and Toby xx

I've just read about poor Lucy having another lump in her mouth. I'm so glad she had a lovely time on Sunday on her walk, what a good memory for her. Lucy has been having a great time - yesterday we took her to the Waseley Hills walk and today we have just come back from a fantastic walk around Brueton Park in the sunshine. She had red salmon with her tea last night and has a whole host of goodies lined up for her this week. Thanks to Kate for the sausages and thank you to everyone for your kind messages.

Due to a lump that has appeared in her mouth in addition to other lumps appearing on her body, we have decided to let her slip away on Friday afternoon before she gets to the stage where she starts suffering.

I took Lucy to the vets this morning to have more fluid drained from the lump. The vet checked her and found 2 more lumps starting to form, one on her back leg and one on her neck. We are hoping we have a week or two with her but the vet has said as soon as she stops eating, it is time to let her go.

She wowed everyone in her new pink collar and fleecy coat and had a big peice of pate with her tablets when we got back home. She is a brave little girl.

Lucy has been doing really well - the swelling had started to go down and she seems a happy contented girl at ours. However, we have just had a devastating phone call from the vets. Unfortunately histology has confirmed they removed a grade 3 Mast Cell Tumour and they think this is more than likely to be a secondary.

Poor poor Lucy. She was quite distressed when I collected her from the vets at 5pm yesterday.

The side of her head seemed to be swelling and by 7.30pm I called the emergency vet. They advised me to remove the head bandage and when we did we were covered in blood!!! Using a volume of towels, the blood poured out of the drain and her face started to go down. Phew!

She spent the night in a cage by the side of our bed and wimpered most of the night but she has had egg on toast this morning and seems brighter. The photos taken this morning (for those of you with a strong stomach) shows her looking loads better!

Lucy stopped at our house last night as she is going in to have either removal of the lump in her throat (or just a biopsy if they are unable to remove the lump) today. She slept on our bed last night and although a little stressed is doing well. Toileted outside first thing and enjoyed her walk around the park. Giving her big cuddles xxxx

What a stunning girl she is! There is no way she will be at the kennels for long! Hoping to pop in sometime soon and help with the walks, I doubt she'll still be there, but it'd be lovely to meet her. Such a pretty girl!
