Hi Vickic - we have 5 greys - all cat and small animal friendly - and belive me - you soon adapt to how you cope with walking, transporting etc. Our latest grey is a 7 year old from Ruth - and he's certainly livened up our lives. He's not the dog we first got - into absolutely everything - and a bit naughty in the house re toileting (despite being toilet trained) - but we're working on it!! I've just rescued a box set DVD from being chewed lol! However, I agree with all the other comments - two really is no different to one - and they are also good company for each other!

Thank you so much everyone, I'm so touched by the amount of responses and how reassuring you've all been - will be sure to let you all know what happens next :) xxxx

We've got two and we definitely are planning on having children...in fact I even looked at a pram the other day and said to Stefan 'that one would work, I could tie one each side!'. We've found that they walk beautifully together actually and are great company for each other too...if we tie them up outside a shop we return to find them entwined :-) no whining/worrying, so I'd be really confident to tie them up outside the fence of a play area in the future, where I can keep an eye, but be relaxed that they were taking care of each other. Because of our future plans we've also introduced them to children on walks and they've been really good (Perdi a little nervous at first), just letting the kids stroke them and having a sniff back (which made one little boy giggle). Paddy is much calmer and less bothered by things than Perdi, but both are fab and I haven't had a moments concern about adding little people and buggies into the mix...we're going to have to buy an estate tho!! x

Hi Vikic, in my experience 2 is no more difficult than 1, infact I think it's easier! I've not had to deal with buggies, but I can often be seen on school runs laden with PE kits, lunchboxes and violins and with 3 greys trotting along quite happily alongside me! As Naomi says, by the time buggies become a reality you will have loads of experience handling them. Why don't you pop along to the kennels with Riley and do some walkies with the trust dogs? It'll give you an idea what it feels like, plus it'll help Ruth out no end ;0)

Hi Vikic. I walk 4 on my own with no trouble whatsoever, once they've "emptied out" they walk beautifully by my side. On occassions our other 13 year old grey honours me with her company so at times I have 5 leads to deal with, again,no problem. I can honestly say with hand on heart 2 are no more difficult to handle than one as they learn from each other. Cherry is cat friendly as well, Why not give it a try I will guarantee you wont look back. Jill

I'd back up what everyone has said so far, and I've found two easier than one. I haven't had to do the buggy thing, but walking with two dogs and three children under ten has never been a problem. The only minus is that the dogs can't go in the play area if you go to the park, but that would be the case no matter how many dogs you had. I'd give it a go...!

Hello Julie,

I went through this same dilema not so long ago. I have a calm and collected grey, Milo and recently added Millie (once Clara) and she has definately brightened up our lives. Sometimes I say things this way: if you're thinking about it and the thought won't go away then it's probably what you really want to do as otherwise you either wouldn't consider it in the first place or you would soon find a reason not to do it at all. Of course you don't want to let the new grey down but all you can do is try it...maybe an older or more cat friendly dog would be easier with the push chair as less chase. However by the time there is a buggy involved, both dogs should be quite settled and calm and you should be more used to handling them. Obstacles are merely there to work around but not to get in the way completely! :) x

Hi, two is better than one as everyone else says its nice for them to have the company, its what their used to. May be good idea to go for 'cat friendly' so if you are out walking with them with a buggy it wouldnt bother them if they see one!. Plus do you know anyone who has a buggy to borrow so you could practise! lol.

Hi Vikic. We have 2 lovely black girls. Lola (Highfire Lass) has been with us for just over 6 months and Lena for about 7 weeks or so now. It's great when Paul and I can walk them together which we enjoy too, but with work committments etc I have to walk them on my own quite often. Neither of ours are cat (or squirrel) friendly so it can get a bit exciting at times but I honestly don't find it any harder walking 2, even when they kick off at their arch enemies cats and squirrels. I have them both on one side of me (e.g left) with my right hand through the the loop of the leads and my left hand controlling the length of lead they have at their disposal. This works for me and even when they bounce or lunge at a small furry it's not much different handling to one. We had Lena on trial for 2 weeks as this was one of the things I needed to be sure I was OK with before we committed. In the house and garden it's no different apart from 2 sprawling bodies to step over....and we have insisted on good manners when food is around (theirs and ours) which makes things pleasant. The only thing I can't comment on is kids & buggies as we are an adult only household.
Hope this might help a bit as we are fairly new to it ourselves (they are our first greys too). Linda x

Thanks for your help everyone, my main worry about 2 is walking them both, is it more of a handful? And I'm thinking about the future and possibility we may have kids in a few years time. We do a lot of walks together, the OH and I because we both like to be outdoors, but guess I'm also thinking potential buggy in years to come, with 2 dogs... Would be great if others could share their experiences xx

Tuesday 07 Dec 17:40

ahem. think this might not be what you want to hear but i have always found having 2 dogs is easier than just having one, they are by nature pack animals and they enjoy the company of other canines, hence i ended up having 3. all my life i have had two dogs together as they will keep each other company when the humans are not there, why not ask Ruth whether she let you have her on trial and see how you go? good luck with whatever you decide but i am sure Riley would love to have a little cute sis. We felt like that Viki when I decided rich and I should have a buddy for Rolo, but once everything settled down there is was no difference at all, we just get more love and cuddles from them when we come home. It is lovely having two, we'd probably have another if we had the space lol.

by Vikic

Tuesday 07 Dec 13:09

Someone please tell me why we shouldn't give Cherry a go with our current greyhound Riley - we have enough space, we have enough love.... but I'm just not sure how much extra commitment having 2 is and whether it's a step too far... ooooh dilemma!

Cherry passed her cat test today but was too playful with the small dog in the family so they have decided not to have her. She really is a very happy little girl - a bundle of fun and her tail never stops wagging!

So relieved to see Cherry with a reserved tag, we met her on Friday and I just love this girl - so happy, she'll be eager to please too :) fingers crossed for her new owners and their cat test!

Cherry is a tiny gorgeous girl with a great fun personality. Her tail doesn't stop wagging n I've been whipped by it quite a few times now. I think she'd make an excellent sister for Pip. She's gonna make a great fun addition to any family. X
