I am so so sorry to hear about Sunny. Last summer when we lost our grey I came to Daybreaks and met Sunny and set my heart on him. He was a wonderful character. Ultimately we didn't home him as my children were perhaps too young for his lively nature, but I've often wondered how he was doing. In fact, I looked out for him at the Dog Show earlier this month and hoped I would see him. All the very best wishes to his family at this tough time. He really was a very lovely boy and I'm sure you have many happy memories of him. x

I'm so sorry to hear this news. Having lost Stig way too soon, I know how hard it is. I hope the family get through this with the knowledge that they made his short retirement a wonderful one and maybe consider adopting another in time, as I did. x

I well remember taking this lovely big boy to Kingsbury Waterpark before he was rehomed-he was such a lively character with lots of energy. He charmed many a person and developed a fan club of people trying to draw attention to prospective owners. He did wait a long time but eventually the big boy found a loving home albeit a short retirement he was loved and will be fondly remember by those who had the pleasure to meet and care for him whilst he found his forever home. All good wishes to his owners they can be proud of what they did for Sunnyxx

I am so very sorry to read this, particularly at such a young age.

Although I don't get over to the kennels I follow the website throughout each week and have done so since adopting our first greyhound in March 2009. Therefore I always remember the greyhounds and follow their stories of rehoming etc. and it is very sad to see when retirements are so short lived.

This is such very sad news. My thoughts are very much with Sunny's family who have lost him far too soon.
I remember meeting this very handsome boy when Deb took him along to a Kingsbury Walk before he was homed. So sad that his retirement was so short, but very much enjoyed I'm sure.
Sleep tight Sunny. Love from Linda, Paul, Lola & Lena xxx

I am writing with great sadness that I have just heard that beautiful Sunny left for Rainbow Bridge this afternoon. He had not been well for a while and despite tests, he had declined in health. My thoughts are with his wonderful family who Sunny entertained and kept on their toes. He was a wonderful character and much loved by us at Daybreaks as he was a long stayer until he found himself the most wonderful home. Run free Sunny - I am so very very sad you did not have longer to enjoy your retirement. xxxx

Awwww that is fantastic for him!! I went to bed last night thinking about him and hoping he was being a good boy.. I knew there was the right family out there for him, and with patience and understanding that he would be a fabulous companion. I hope sunny boy can go someway to filling the gap in your home and your hearts. So so happy you have given this boy his real chance at happiness. We will miss you sunny. No doubt an absolute favourite with volunteers! Much love xxxxxxxxx

The first thing I thought about when I woke this morning was...... I wonder how Sunny is doing....... especially after the incident in the office with the squeaky toy!!!!! Thanks to the Walsh family for giving this fella a chance - our longest stayer - everything went against him in the homing stakes as he is big, black and very keen. Thank you so much for seeing past this and giving him a chance as he is a big gentle softy at heart x

Hey all, just to let you know Sunny has been suprisingly, absolutely, fantastic settling here in his new home! He loved exploring the garden and has already broken the squeak off of his toy! After looking up at every new sound and sniffing around most of the kitchen, he has been lying on his bed in the living room with his head on moms feet-very much at home already :) Wish us luck for his walk tomorrow! Thanks again, Jo and family xxxx

I have just got home after an amazing and hectic day at the kennels. The phone rang and it was my wonderful friend Lyn.
Lyn, Mike and the family (who sadly lost both Lara and Holly, their special greys, earlier in the year) came to look at all the greys today and they have decided to offer a home to Sunny. I am over the moon at this news as I know his wonderful playful personality will bring many smiles x

ok i think that might be best, i'm supposed 2 be in work in solihull at 10am tho so i'll be there as close to that as i can. I'm really sorry about whats happened, we we're taking all the usual precautions but as i said unfortunately he headbutted/pushed Derek in the back of the legs as he was leaving the room knocking him 2 the ground and we cant take the risk of something similar happening when 1 of the kids are going thru the door x

Wednesday 24 Aug 20:58

Hi Jen, I always said that Sunny was not cat friendly but you assured me that he would not come into contact with the cats. I think your decision is wise to return him before your cat gets injured. I have space for him if you want to return him tomorrow.

by jenesis

Wednesday 24 Aug 20:53

We have unfortunately had 2 make the decision that we're unable 2 give Sunny a permanent home. We have started to get on top of the chewing and barking issues after following all the advice given and i was going 2 come up 2 daybreaks this week to sign the papers. However, unfortunately earlier 2day Sunny forced his way through the lounge door as Derek (not a small guy)was leaving the room, pushing him over and he was able to get hold of Tiny (the cat), who fortunately isn't seriously hurt. As some of you may remember Cally, Mystic and Fudge all attacked Tiny at easter so we have been extra cautious. We were prepared to carry on with Sunny here but after much consideration and discussion we feel that if Sunny is strong enough to push Derek over we cant take the risk of him knocking over either of our younger children and possibly injuring them or even killing one of the cats. So unfortunately we will have 2 make arrangements 2 return him at a suitable time. Even tho we've had some problems with him, Sunny would make a perfect pet but it would need 2 be in a cat free home and preferably with another grey xx

Friday 19 Aug 22:47

Hi jen, have you tried him on burns? Its a really good food and helps with behavior! Definately worth a try both my boys are on it xxx

Friday 19 Aug 20:40

Thank u for all the advice. re food, they have just a bowl of greyhound/lurcher food in the mornings then in the evening they also have pasta or rice with chicken or sardines etc and a peanut butter sandwich during the day. Unfortunately due 2 unforeseen issues in my job at the start of the week i was having 2 be out the house for 13/14hrs a day (i'm only contracted to work 12hrs a week) so they've not had their usual walk (length/frequency).Then on thurs myself, partner and 2 youngest kids went 2 blackpool 4 the day leaving our 2 eldest at home. I then got a call off my eldest just as we we're leaving blackpool 2 say that Mystic was showing signs of being unwell (not wanting his food or getting off bed) and getting worse as time went on, after a 3hr journey worrying about him the second i walked thru the front door i ran into the lounge 2 be greeted by 3 very waggy tails and bouncing dogs, obviously nothing wrong with Mystic. We then took them on a long walk whilst our eldest kicked all his friends out n tidied the house up, and they didn't start barking until 6.30am (usual time). We've been putting Sunny's muzzle on over night n when they're left on their own for a while. My work issues have now resolved so i'll be at home a lot more as usual so hopefully things will now settle down again. I know and understand that things could take a while 2 settle down and am prepared 2 put the time and effort into helping things improve but just felt earlier in the week that things weren't going 2 work after getting calls/msgs whilst i was at work from home shouting and ranting about what he had destroyed. Fingers crossed things will work out and there'll soon be a green rehomed sign on here. Jen xx

PS Like the others have said chewing is usually a sign of stress, do you leave the toys down? Again I'd pick them all up so that there's no trigger for a squabble when i'm not around to referee and I wouldn't let them have squeaky toys at this stage in case that gets them over excited ... for the moment it sounds like you need to establish quiet, calm and control. I love Kongs ... stuff them with things like dog food and peanut butter/mashed potato etc so its hard to get the food out and that occupies them for a while and they have to use their brain.. you will need to have a Kong for all the dogs and again make sure you are watching them whilst they eat them in case one finishes his early and tries to steal from another. Its not about dominance (hateful word) but about having boundaries and good manners. J x

Thursday 18 Aug 08:07

Hi Check out how much exercise he's getting ... I always suggest a good hour mornings and evenings then a late wee stop if you are having problems with them .. you can usually reduce this as they settle but a nicely tired dog is usually more likely to sleep and relax. Food - in my experience greys can be intolerant to even chicken and rice which is why we started to recommend people try Burns Pork and Potato, less than 20% protein is a must and I never feed anything brightly coloured or with additives ... like children dogs (in my experience) can become hyper. What happens at feed times .. I saw you said ' can't eat the others food till they've had their fill' now I may have got the wrong end of the stick here but I would always stand between my dogs while they eat and I never let them go to each others dishes (until they have all been with me for weeks/months) .. food is a great resource and I don't want any arguments, no bullying, no-one missing out on food PLUS its a great time to establish that what you say (usually LOL) goes. I'm no fan of 'dominance' arguments but to me its just a time to establish good manners and that I am to be listened to ...if they are all swopping dishes at food times maybe the others feel bullied and upset ... and that's when serious arguments can happen :( Give me or Ruth or your home checker a ring as its difficult to cover everything without knowing exactly what's going on. J x

Wednesday 17 Aug 21:27

I would consider trying him with a cage for night use - maybe Daybreaks can lend you one as a trial. This might help Cally too until she gets used to the change in the household as it will give her a rest from needing to look for Sunny and his antics.

by kallie

Wednesday 17 Aug 21:21

When i brought my Toby home my first greyhound really spat his dummy out and suddenly behaved totally differently than he had done, he loved Toby and there was never any grumble but he felt put out at having another dog to share his home with despite the fact that Monty still lived with us as well then,Cally will settle down again, she is bound to pick up on Sunny's uncertainties and your anxiety as well. As for Sunny, try keeping the muzzle on as Ruth suggested, he cannot destroy thing when he is wearing it and once he has settled down and feels more secure then he will stop feeling the need to chew everything...his world has been turned upside down and he has to learn too many things all at once and he is obviously feeling insecure hence the chewing. the muzzle is not a punishment to them, they are used to wearing them at the kennels and they can still drink etc so its nothing awful...it's only been 8 days, it took my boys an awful lot longer than that to find their paws and settle in...they are all different and learn at different rates, please please give him time and patience to settle down, he will be so worth it....

by DaybreaksRuth

Wednesday 17 Aug 18:55

Hi Jenny, what are you feeding Sunny on, how long are his walks, and how often are they as all these factors will make a massive difference to behaviour. Give him things he can chew on such as long lasting chews or use a muzzle - he CANNOT chew things he shouldn't whilst wearing this!

There is an article in this issue of the Grapevine all about chewing..... our Shrew did this when we first had her - we soon learnt to use the muzzle even though we felt cruel doing it to start with.

by jenesis

Wednesday 17 Aug 16:54

Unfortunately it is starting 2 look like we're not going 2 be able 2 make Sunny a permanent member of the family. He's destructive behaviour is escalating n he is now chewing through closed boxes 2 get at the things inside them, he has chewed thru a laptop power cable whilst it was plugged in n its getting things out 2 chew that were stored behind book cases etc. We have been making some progress when it comes 2 mealtimes and he is learning he cant eat the others food until they've had their fill. He was able 2 open doors which when the cats are in the house is not a good thing but we've now changed the handles n he can no longer open them (n neither can the kids lol). For about the last 5/6 days Cally hasn't been herself n seems very unsettled n we're not sure if this is 2 do with Sunny, they all get on n we even have photo's of them lying on the bed 2gether (which she took nearly 3 wks 2 do when fudge 1st arrived). Would gratefully appreciate some advice. Thanx xx

by jenesis

Sunday 14 Aug 22:03

Sunny seems 2 be settling reasonably well but as he is so possessive over toys there have been a few growls when Cally or Mystic have tried 2 play with 1 of the toys (even tho we have multiples of the same toys). even tho we keep tellin him not to our 18yr old son left his coat in the lounge with the dogs n it got chewed up (maybe now he'll listen to us). The biggest problem we're having at the moment is barking and growls between them (usually at about 2am) but it sounds more like its Cally instigating it. We've been getting up n letting them out into the garden for a few mins n then they settle back down n are quiet for the rest of the night (Cally nor Mystic have ever had a problem with barking during the night b4). Other than when toys are involved there is no barking/growling between the 3 of them during the day. He is a lot calmer now when we have food in the room n he doesnt really try n snatch it off us, but we're still having to hold him back to stop him from eating the others food. Any advice that any1 can give re the barking and the chewing of things would be much appreciated xx

Thursday 11 Aug 20:40

I've got a whippet who destroys anything plastic or 'stuffed'. Kongs are good ... if filled under supervision (in a multiwhoof home), nylon bones and I allow 'rope' toys, again under supervision .. so I am in charge of them!!! don't know whether that is of any use! Jx
Glad the harness did the trick

by jenesis

Wednesday 10 Aug 20:03

Sunny seems 2 be settling in reasonable well but has been a bit destructive and destroyed all the dog toys. He's not endearing himself with the other half tho after destroying his beloved 'Monkey' 2day. He's been pulling a lot whilst walking on the lead so i popped into daybreaks 2day 2 get an anti-pull harness and he was like a different dog when i took him 4 a walk with it on. Fingers crossed he continues 2 settle down n become a bit less destructive x

by Deb

Tuesday 09 Aug 15:50

What a little monkey when we took him to Kingsbury water park he refused all treats.
We have a lurcher that destroys most toys in seconds especially plastic ones ! The kong based toys seem to be pretty strong and we got a rubber space hopper toy from Sainburys which unbelievable in still intact several months on.The frog the kennels sell has also done well but most toys seem to get chewed up or shredded!
Hope he continues to get on with Cally and Mystic and helps fill the gap Fudge has left.will keep my fingers crossed.

by jenesis

Tuesday 09 Aug 09:13

Sunny has had a good 1st night, not had any accidents in the house and apart from 1 bit of whining bout half hour after we'd all gone 2 bed which resulted in the other 2 barking he settled down n had a very quiet night. He has destroyed ALL the dog toys we had in the house and tries 2 pinch the others food, so we need 2 try n find some indestructable toys and keep him in check at mealtimes. The 3 of them are still getting on n there has been no sign of any tension/agression between them so all going well xx

We have used washing powder (or the liquid variety) mixed with warm water too - just make sure it's a biological powder though, I understand it's the enzymes in the biological powder that gets rid of the scent and stops them being drawn to wee in the same area again. Mand

Hi Sharon, I am not sure why your post has appeared under Sunny.... anyway, please give Julie Sadler a call or go along to any of the free training sessions offered where you can speak to the trainers and other greyhound owners for advice and support. Julie and the other trainers are all very experienced with greyhounds and can offer more specialised advice than going to a 'normal dog training group'.

The training voucher should be in your homing pack with all the contact numbers of all the trainers who can help you.

What are you feeding her and what is her routine for feeding and walking currently as these all have a major impact?

I no about the running out you might say be more vidual. But not always possible. Thanks

Maybe the reason he's being overlooked is down to primal psychology - a bit like when you go to a dance and no-one wants to talk to the girl / boy that's standing by themselves purely because nobody else is!

I will also happily take him somewhere to get noticed, its difficult to understand when you have spent lots of time with them how some houndies get overlooled! If its a size thing then don't be put off, my big boy can curl into the tiniest ball and squeeze himself between two people on the sofa!! Please remember that these dogs are so different when you get them home and settles.. I think sunny would be your best mate! I know my big boy is. Xxxxxxx

Lovely, lovely looking little boy. I read 'kennels well with girls' and immediately thought that maybe he wouldn't do quite so well with boys - just wondering if this is contributing to putting other people off too?

Roxy says would Sunny like to join her for a nice long walk in the park this weekend at some point? We wouldn't want to take him away from the kennels if he might get snapped up but he seems to have been there a while and as mum's baby bump is getting big she needs to get some exercise so thought a nice, long walk could do us all good! Especially as dad's off playing cricket! xx

Sunny darling we were very tempted give you a trial wilth our other 3 when we fell for you yesterday at the birthday party. After having a serious think about it (forcing ourselves to think with our heads not our hearts) we decided it would be too hazardous to walk 4 greys when our other 3 still go bananas when they see another breed. Until they are calm when meeting other breeds I think it would be silly to have a fourth. We could have given you a trial but thought it would be unfair on you to give you a home environment then return you to the kennels if our fears were confirmed. You are such a gorgeous boy and would probably have had a wail of a time with Fire. We are gutted but have to be sensible and think of the welfare of all of you. You really deserve a wonderful home and I know the perfect family is out there for you. Please give this guy a chance xxxxxxx

He is such a gentle giant. Please do not be put off by his size, more greyhound to cuddle and love.He has such a lovely face and is so friendly and really needs a home of his own.
He has so much potential and really likes human company on our walk he enjoyed walking against you and when we stopped he liked to snuggle up to people especially Willow's gran. I know Willow's auntie was trying to persuade the rest of the family to consider having Sunny as a boyfriend for her so if she is reading this I wonder how she got on?

Sunday 26 Jun 14:24

I have been a very lucky boy today,I have been to the greyhound walk at Kingsbury water Park with Millie the lurcher and her mum and dad.I was a bit scared at first going away from Daybreaks in a strange car with people I didn't know but I have had a brilliant morning.
I have been fussed over and cuddled by lots and lots of people I think it is because I am so handsome ,charming and impecably behaved but MIllie thinks it is because I was wearing a bright red coat with "I need a home " on it.
I met some of my Old Day Break friends,Ciara and her mum and dad and Katy with her mummy and brother and sister. They seem very happy and I really like the idea of having a family to myself especially if you go on walks in woods and around lakes.
Millies mum says I have been a really good boy,she thinks I am a big softie cuddle monster who loves to lean against people.
She told Auntie Ruth that I was a delight to take out, that I loved all the greyhounds on the walk especially the ladies. I never growled or barked and ignored some odd looking creatures that Millie's mum said were Yorkshireterriers,Staffies and Canadian Geese. She also told Auntie Ruth that for a big dog I walked nicely on the lead and was very responsive to instruction she even said I would be a delight to have in a house and train.Well what does she expect I was a super racer and now I just want to enjoy my retirement in a home of my own which I can chill in and a family that will give me lots of cuddles.
Day Breaks have been looking after me for a while now I don't want to seem ungrateful but I do think I would really like a home of my own just like all the friends I met today have.
Woof Woof Sunny.
