My Lucy has been gone a month now and the house is so quiet without her. She really was lively right until the end bless her. Even at the age of 11 she never ever calmed down. She is now running free with her angel brother charlie ??

We are going to wales tomorrow for a week so this will be little lucys first holiday with her brothers :o) cant wait to take her to the beach as she loves getting in the water ... although the other two are scared of the sea..... cos it moves lol!!! xxx

Wednesday 29 Feb 15:22

This little girl is ready for her forever home. We are on our third week of foster care, Lucy has blended well with my family and my other greyhounds. She showed that if you are willing to give her time to adjust and teach her what to do, she is like a sponge absorbing what you teach her and the bonus is, she will give you the trust and love whole-heartedly. I love this girl. Given a different circumstance, I'll adopt her. Loving sweet little girl - that's Lucy. X

Saturday 18 Feb 13:23

Lucy chased a squirrel with the boys in the back garden. She is beginning to eat at a slower rate as well and is taking more time enjoying her food. Lucy perfected the art of waiting to be called for meals. I am so proud of this little girl. Smart and so lovable!

by joythornz

Wednesday 15 Feb 14:34

Lucy is enjoying herself so far. On our walkies, we walked past a pug. Lucy showed interest but more like curiosity than aggression. Lucy and my two greyhounds seemed to match in temperament as they seemed not bothered with her lively personality. They also allowed her in their beds with them from time to time. She is clean and knows when to do her "business". She is basically a quiet girl but alert and gets excited when stimulated by fast movements (like when someone runs). So far, she hasn't given me any trouble at all since we got her last Sunday. The best way to exhaust her excess energy is either to give her a long walk or two 20 minute walks a day. Once knackered, like any other greyhounds, she is sleeping quietly in her bed all through the day/night. Couch potato through and through.
Please give Lucy a chance to have a forever family to love and look after her. She is a very sweet girl with lively personality. How I wish I could have Lucy permanently but we are just renting our house. Our landlord is kind enough to allow us to adopt 2 greyhounds. We wouldn't want to rock the boat with another one.
Take a chance with Lucy and like we all discovered in greyhounds, the return is priceless.

by LadyVictoria

Monday 13 Feb 13:49

So good to see she has a foster home. xxx

by joythornz

Monday 13 Feb 09:18

Lucy update: Lucy and my two greyhounds got on well the moment she arrived at our house. As any new dog in a house, she wanders around the house and garden checking things out. After a few minutes, she made herself totally at home with us. There were a few instances of panting which I am expecting since she is on unfamiliar grounds but that quickly went away as soon as we scratch her ears. She has calmed down and went to sleep.
I have trained my two greyhounds (both boys) to wait just outside my kitchen door whilst fixing their meals. They would sit calmly and wait to be called to eat their dinner. I started training Lucy just to wait outside the kitchen door (without the sitting command yet but I'll try in time) and after several practice and treats (worked on her as she loves her food), she finally got it! I am quite surprised how fast she learned it. Now she knows one routine that every dog in my house must follow that is to wait patiently for their meal. She is a lively girl but I think the person who would adopt her must teach Lucy a set routine. She clearly demonstrated to me that she is bright, willing if guided, and could do more if you just spend some time teaching her how.
She is a sweetheart. She slept well the whole night and didn't give us any trouble at all. I've just given their brekkie, I am so pleased she practice what she learned yesterday of waiting patiently for her food by the kitchen door. Well done, Luce!
Ruth - no worries. Brian and I are forever grateful to you, Rob and Daybreaks. Our way of saying thank you and to be able to help as much as we can with these wonderful gifts from heaven called greyhounds. Will keep you posted. XXX - Myrna

by fi,charlie,fly+Lucy

Sunday 22 Jan 13:12

Also the dogs in the kennels behave so differently in a home, dont overlook an excitable dog, I chose the one which was barking, chewing his kennel, crying all day and absolutely huge! and i havent looked back since, he is a perfect gentleman in the house, no barking, only dries to go to the toilet. He is affectionate and all he wanted was a home of his own. He hasnt chewed a thing since the day we bought him home.. all he ever wanted was a home and someone to love him xxxx

by Deb

Ruth is a wise old sage! looks can be deceptive as with humans!.You need to look at a dog which fits in with your household and circumstances the best for everyones safety and sometimes looks whilst important shouldn't be the first priority.
Also beauty is in the eye of the beholder!!

Hi, I first met Lucy back in August when we adopted Gemma as the two girls came in together. I also saw her again a couple of months later on a fund raising day at Daybreaks when she was sharing a kennel with her best friend Char.

She is absolutely gorgeous and we log on to the daybreaks site every week hoping she has been adopted, but feel deeply sad to see her waiting for her forever family at Daybreaks.

Gemma (our greyhoud) is a lovable big character in our house/family and is a perfect beautiful lady. So please anyone wishing to adopt take a look at Lucy, I'm sure you will fall in love with her - go on give her a home for christmas.

I have 2 pigs, kept outside in summer & inddors in winter. Ny 2 greys love them - but have yet to try & eat them. They really only get interested if the pigs move around - wonder why???? Ha Ha, we manage just fine, I just partially cover the indoor cage so the dogs walk on by without noticing too much and have never tried to have the pigs out with the dogs around.

by skinnyme

Sunday 13 Nov 20:37

When I first began to rehome greyhounds I had a guinea pig and a naughty rabbit! After an initial sniff through the hutch Bobby soon lost interest, each of mine have had different reactions to small fluffies, some positive some negative, it boils down to the personality of the dog, don't let it put you off rehoming a greyhound, with patience and a bit of work they can live harmoniously together.

by fi,charlie,fly+Lucy

Sunday 13 Nov 20:17

U would have to keep them seperate until u knew how ur grey would react to very small fluffies! Lucy is a gorgous girl and very playful. Dunno how shed be around guinea pigs tho! Xxx

Sunday 13 Nov 19:24

i'm new to this forum, what a gorgeous little girl - cant believe she's not got a home yet. i would love a greyhound however i have 2 naughty guinea pigs which live indoors (havent the heart to put them in a cage outside!) i imagine she'd not approve of! ...any advice?!...I realise the obvious response here, and i know i could keep them in one room / locked in their cage, however so scared of risk of them meeting... I love this little pup, met her the other day!

Thursday 10 Nov 08:28

Oh, I get you now, doh! My hounds are my babies too so I know where you are coming from ;0) Well, we had Kevin first followed in quick succession by youngster Sadie. We asked for a lively girl to bring Kev out of his shell and Daybreaks certainly delivered! Then Moo came along unexpectedly (!) and I can say with all honestly that they are a perfect gang and we have never had such much as a squeak or squabble with any of them. I was terrified I might upset our perfect pack by adding a third but I have to say it's been great, as Sarah says they are all so different and amazing in their own way. Many Daybreakers have got all boys, all girls or a combination of both and they all generally seem to work well. I was naughty and Moo came to live with us without anybody (hubby, kids, dogs) even meeting her (there were mitigating circumstances) but any sensible person would take the existing dogs to Daybreaks and and get them to choose their friend. Good luck! Em x

Hi Jo, when you took on your second, that seems to demonstrate how they both adapted and fitted in together and despite the sex of the next one I am sure they will adapt again. As for three . . . we had our first - Toby, then little Jo and they were golden together, our family was complete x x Toby accepted her and she lets him think he is the boss lol - our third is Will (I Am) who we fostered but couldn't bear to give back in the end. They have had the occasional grumble but they sorted out their order as I am sure a third in your pack would (whether male or female) our three make us smile and laugh out loud every day as they are so different and each so amazing x If I can help with any specific questions, or anything - please don't hesitate 2 ask x x x Sairs x

Wednesday 09 Nov 18:15

Hi Emma,
I realised after I posted my message yesterday that it may have read like I have children, but both the boy and girl I mentioned are actually greyhounds (so they are my babies really :o) ). He has been with me for 5 yrs, and 2 yrs for her and they really get on great. I'm curious to know how taking on a third changes the dynamic of the existing two and which would be the better sex to fit in to our pack without threatening the status of the other two?

Many thanks. Jo x

by Emma

Wednesday 09 Nov 12:13

Hi JoV

We took on our 3rd hound nearly 2 years ago when my girls were 8 and 11. All 3 of my greys are representative of the breed in that they are very docile and will pretty much put up with anything which is thrown at them (not literally!) My children are (generally) quite sensible and we have always drummed it into them to be respectful towards animals etc etc but I found it's visiting friends/nieces/nephews etc who present the problems! As I said, my greys will put up with anything but just because they put up with it doesn't mean they like it - as you know it's not fair on them to be manhandled by over-exuberant kids! So, we still keep on display the poster given to us by Daybreaks which is a list of 'doggie rules' and we make sure visiting children are aware of this and know to respect the dogs' space especially if they are in their beds. I'm sure Ruth will have a copy of this poster, otherwise I can scan and send my rather battered copy!

Hope this helps, Em x

Monday 31 Oct 13:45

...no problem Ruth. I was basically sending a message to Stephers about getting that second grey. I actually think getting a second can be more nerve-wracking than deciding to get your first. We'd had Gent for a year, he was a very happy boy and he wasn't pining for a companion - I guess it was more for us than anything, thinking he'd have a little friend. When we first put them together there was no great romance, no fireworks, in fact they totally ignored each other, sniffing at separate ends of the run and more interested in their surroundings than each other. We took that as a positive sign (at least they didn't hate each other). We've now had Emily and Gent together for a year. They are both so different individually, but together bring us so much love and laughter. They are simply a joy to have around and we say they're like an old married couple! The effort involved really isn't that much extra either, if you're walking one....if you're feeding one...etc, etc. Have a chat with your parent, I'm sure if they are already involved with The Stigg, they won't find an extra one too much of a stretch. Good luck and I hope it works out for you. Mand

Paul took the lovely Lucy to the show today. She's a bright and happy girl and is very interested in life. Seemed also to be comfortable being with our 2 girls and with all the other greys and their owners we chatted to during the day. She was interested in the other breeds but certainly no growling or barking (that was left to Lena!) Jumped straight in the car without any encouragement, settling down and travelling very well on her own. Please someone.... look at this pretty little girl who has waited long enough now and so deserves her forever home. Keeping everything crossed for you Lucy, love from Linda, Paul, Lola & Lena xxx

I have a Grand C Max and can fit my 3 greys in, so I should imagine 2 in a C max should be fine, they sort of find their own space, with the odd grumble when a foot goes somewhere is shouldn't, lol, it all adds to the fun! X

by NikkiClarke

Friday 07 Oct 10:41

YOu reckon I could get two in the back of a ford focus C Max then? At the moment Percy takes up all the space in the boot, but I I wonder weather thats just because he can!
its only an issue when we go on Hols as we like to take Percy with us when we can. XX
