I picked up Henry yesterday evening from Fivelands after his dental. The poor fella had 28 teeth out but I am sure he will soon be feeling much better. He was collected from our house by his 'Auntie' and I have already heard from her this morning who will keep me posted as to how he is doing x He gets my cuddle today!

Recent Daybreaks returnee Henry has today joined us on the Melbicks Awareness Day.
This lovely chilled lad proved to everyone he met what a wonderful calm and friendly nature he has.
His behaviour when meeting adults , small children and non greyhounds alike was perfect.
Anyone looking to home a dog already accustomed to family life would have the perfect boy in Henry.

I saw footage of my Henry race! First out the traps & continued the whole way. So strange to then turn around & see a comatose pooch lying across my kitchen floor with his tongue hanging out!
Poor Henners off to the vets in the morning-query colitis :-(

I'm so sorry, I've only just seen these comments. How rude you must think I am! Thank you for your advice, I will look into these options & I really appreciate your feedback. Discovered something new about Henry this evening......he likes to play fight/dance with my vacuum. Bottom in the air, tail wagging & whizzing around the vacuum head. This sent him into a crazy few minutes where he ran around the lounge on my sofa backs & tried to eat my Argos catalogue! He is a loon & we absolutely adore him. Helen x

Have you tried the Antler bones. They sell them at Pets at Home and are from naturally shed antlers. The large ones are about £7-£8 and can last for ages. They have marrowbone inside and usually even heavy chewing just breaks off small bits so are much safer than hide chews. Jack loves his. They can get sharp around the edges after lots of heavy chewing so need to be checked every so often although he's had his current one for ages with no probs. Some are tougher than others. No squeaks though lol

The lovely Henry needs new toys...he keeps killing them! Anyone know where I can find squeaky toys that will withstand a lunatic dog?! So far he's killed a frog, a dachshund, a cow, a tigger, a duck, another dachshund, two squirrels & a pig! He's not interested in the huge rope knot because it doesn't squeak. I suppose he could chew on a house brick? You think that would have a longer life span!? He's super at not chewing anything else like our shoes (this is Jaspers trick), he just loves toys to play with. Any advice would be super, thank you x

Ok Henry. Water bowl levitation one thing but your food bowl too!? The bits of dried food spread far & wide across the kitchen floor & are rather difficult to walk on. Please don't think Henners smell in any way a criticism of Daybreaks. I think his smell mostly a flatulence issue but the fresh clean smell now masks his natural odour! It's just his smell. None of the greyhounds smell at Daybreaks & I hope I've not accidentally given this impression to anyone.
As for Denny-I do hope we can help with him. Still thinking about him!

oh no Honeypen..... I am gutted after reading your comment that Henry smelt like 'the giraffe house at Dudley Zoo'! Every single grey that arrives at Daybreaks is bathed on arrival and then bathed again if they are long stayers :-( Perhaps the new 'baby powder' shampoo and spray will help overcome this.....
However, thanks for your lovely comments about the team we have at Daybreaks - it is everyone who is passionate about helping the greys we have in our care that makes it all happen together.
I am over the moon that you made Henry an official member of your family today and really pleased he is gaining weight :-)
I will ask Denny if he fancies going to a fabulous foster home as this would certainly free up a space for one of the boys off the waiting list xxx

Well, what a super day it's been for our family. Today we brought Henry back to Daybreaks.......for adoption! We were going to give it the full week of half-term to check all was definitely ok with Henry and the boys but we knew it was/is so adopted him today! Whilst he was there, he had a lovely bath, teeth check, nail clip etc and now he smells less like the giraffe house at Dudley zoo and more like a bowl of pot pourri. He really did have a certain pong to him which is now all gone.
It was super to see the staff at Daybreaks again-I know Henry was liked by all there. We promise to take really good care of him and love him always. We couldn't imagine life without him but do miss sitting on the sofa in the evenings-he's so large he takes up the entire three seater and hangs his legs out over the edge. Henry has put on another 2 kilos so we think he's now about the right weight he should be. I have sent Ruth a picture of Jasper and Henry together which she may pop onto the website (if she ever has time to do anything more)!
Thank you to all at Daybreaks-you come out to look after the dogs come rain, shine, freezing cold or when feeling poorly-you make a difference in the world and it doesn't go unnoticed. Helen and family x

Good afternoon! Well, its been a week (yesterday) since Henry came to stay & its been lovely. He's been a very good boy but he does have quite an unusual habit! Almost every day, I walk into the kitchen & find the floor awash with water & the dogs water bowls in Henry's bed! I assumed this was for attention, possibly a thing he started to do at the kennels to prompt someone to come in & talk to him whilst giving him fresh water. Poor Henry we all thought.....until today. I saw him today boldly run up to his water bowl, pick it up in his mouth, showering water everywhere, & run to his bed where he tosses bowl into the air & watches it clatter onto the ground. Hmmmm. I'll be having words with Henners about this I think! In the last few days, he's really come into his own & is utterly bonkers (not helped by the influence of a cheeky whippet). The two now bark & play fight with eachother, chase eachother in the garden....& house & had to be reprimanded yesterday for jumping from one sofa to another during play. He's still as good natured as ever but barking mad! Next week half term, this is the true test to see if all is well with him & family life. I'm not anticipating any problems but we must make sure. That said, my husband & sons had a meeting over breakfast this morning & decided he's definitely ours forever. Ruth, you'd better get those adoption forms ready then! My best wishes to all at Daybreaks. May see some of you for Henry's first free running this weekend. Helen & family x

Henry update-its not yet a week with Henry but he feels like part of the family. He started to come out of his shell more over the weekend & this mornings snow brought out the puppy in him. He even instigated a little bouncy play outside with Jasper The Whippet. He's had a nice groom & wipe over & is learning to come, wait, go in his bed & lie down. I've given up on sit-I don't think they can sit!! Last night, after a family afternoon walk, Henry slept with Jasper-both of them lying on their backs, legs in the air. So far, all the signs are very positive where intergration with the children & Jasper concerned. He's doing really well. Thank you for your good luck wishes-I promise we are looking after him well. Looking forward to the walk in Sutton Park this month too. My very best wishes to all at Daybreaks-without you there wouldn't be any happy endings. Helen & family x

Hi all, its been super to see all your kind wishes for Henry. It's day two of having Henners with us & he's such a super dog. He's kind, gentle, exceptionally well behaved, spotlessly clean in the house and........fast asleep on the sofa with his tongue hanging out after a long walk. He's been an absolute joy & his tail wags whenever he sees us. He's come to a quite noisy home (3 children & an 8 month old whippet). He's not so good at telling Jasper the whippet to stop chewing his ear but, I think, in a few days once his confidence is up he'll put Jasper in his place. Let's hope I can do my best for such a gentle giant & give him the home he deserves. Fingers crossed his weight will go up very soon now he's in a home environment.
To all of you who I have met from or associated with Daybreaks-your dedication & devotion is phenomenal. You make a difference in the world every single day.
I'll keep you posted on how Henry doing. My warmest wishes to you all-Helen & family x

He slept all night downstairs with my greys and this morning ate his breakfast and toileted outside. He was fine being left for an hour as I had a doctors appointment and then he had the excitement of meeting some cats on the way in to the kennels on his cat test.... sadly he found them a little too interesting :-(

Did henry have any probs settling when he went to new home such as anxiety or something ? as i know the neighbours complained but unless i've missed something i don't really understand if it was just the neighbours being a problem or if one dog other the other or both had probs. Not trying to pry in to situation so understand if noone can say. Just wondering if either of these dogs need a liitle extra help and patience or if it wasn't as a result of this at all.

Monday 31 Dec 23:19

We have had Danny now almost 2 months and in that time he has twice gone upstairs and pee'd all over my bed, chewed a wooden table, a windowsill and even my wooden fire surround but not once did i ever consider taking him back. All these things can be repaired or replaced. What cannot be replaced is the love that Danny brings to us, just seeing him lying stretched out on the sofa, on his back with legs in the air showing all his manly bits, the tail wagging and excitement he shows when i come down in the morning or when i get home from work and the way his eyes almost pop out of his head each time he tries some new food (it's hilarious). Everything square or wooden is now covered in bits of cloth to try and stop the chewing lol...

Hopefully we will hear what the issue was with the neighbours just purely for the fact that there are so many regular readers of the website and i know it sounds silly but you do get attached to the dogs and their story especially the long stayers and it is always so great when they finally get their own sofa and dogs being returned is sad for everyone not just the people who are returning the dogs.

Chin up Ruth, tomorrow is another day and you have a great bunch of people around you for support, here's to many more happy homings in 2013. Happy New Year to everyone at Daybreaks and all the lucky owners of daybreaks greys!

Now off to B&Q to buy some wood filler :p

Just wan to make a plea to any prospective dogs owners- greys or any other breed - pleeeeeeeese make sure that you realise what a commitment owning a dog is and give them time to settle & adjust to their new surroundings. Disasters we have had over the years - eating half the furniture in the house, chewing watches, shoes, plants, pulling the curtains down, peeing many times on the carpet & pulling my husband over and fracturing husbands shoulder ( not all the same dog!). Did we ever send them back? No, although we did considerbit a few times! The point is you have to be patient and give them a chance. They are not disposable, they should be your friend for life. Anyway massive thanks to Ruth & the volunteers who make it all happen, and a Happy New Year to you all. x

Such a shame. I'm absolutely gutted for Ruth and everyone at Daybreaks. Everything was all ok lunchtime when I had a sneaky look at work. Was bad enough reading the Evening Mail about BDH. Its a sad situation but if the neighbours were really that unpleasant maybe the family thought the boys would be better back where they are safe and loved. They must be feeling pretty gutted at the moment. Hopefully both will find a new home soon xx

My previous dog who was a non grey , had the worst seperation anxiety , our nieghbours complained constanly about her and even posted dog buster leaftlets through the door!! but i was determined not to give up on her and after much grovling and being polite to the neighbour determination from me and my family won in the end. Did not stop me from adopting another dog " ellie-may" the look on there faces when they saw ellie was pricless! 2 days is not enough time. Good luck in the future boys and i am sure that a home either togther or separate is only around the corner for you.xxxxxx

Can't believe he is back. It is a big thing for a greyhound to adapt to life in a home, but adapt they do, and very quickly, but 2 days is no time at all and does not give him any chance at all. We have recently adopted Molly who is our 5th greyhound, but they are all individuals, and she presented us, with one or two challenges we hadn't encountered before, but she only needed to be shown what is right and what isn't, how would she know? its has taken a little time but that is part of the adoption and acclimatisation process which you look back on and laugh about. I am not sure what was expected of Henry in such a short space of time and it has made me so sad as I wish we could have taken him too.

It's very sad to see any dog returned to kennels for any reason and certainly it takes time for dogs to settle in a new home, me and my hubby know this only too well.

All I can add to what has already been said is that if you really want things to work out you will do whatever you can to do so.

With our three hounds they have all had issues that we have dealt with but we came through it.

I hope all the returnees and new residents all find a loving home in 2013.

Very sad that these dogs have had this upheaval all for nothing! i saw on facebook that the reason was somwthing to do with the neighbours?? my neighbours complained regarding the noise our first hound made when we were dealing with seperation anxiety, but we kept them updated with his progress an d in the end they were helpfull in us confirming what was helping him settle! I cant see what else is a neighbours problem!!

Dogs being returned so soon makes all we do as home checkers and volunteers seem pointless when the dogs are not given the chance to settle. Sad sad times for these poor babies.

I get that there are some valid reasons for returning a dog but 2 days?? :(

When dogs go to new homes their spaces are very quickly taken by dogs who have waited their turn on the waiting list and for the boys in particular this can be months.

PLEASE i urge anyone thinking of taking on a dog, think long and hard!!!!

I am so very upset at having returnees but have to remind myself that they come back for a reason.

The sad thing I find, is that we put a lot of time and effort into trying to help and advise people when looking around the kennels, at the home visit and before a dog is homed from Daybreaks. No one should expect a dog who has lived in a kennel environment for all of its life to adapt to home life within a few days. We offer support if there are problems or questions but if we are not asked, we cannot help.

The worst thing with Santa and Henry's return today is that we did not even get a phone call to say they were being returned. We had already arranged for new arrivals and this means we are now over our capacity at the kennels. Let's hope 2013 can only get better for our beautiful dogs.

Oh no my poor boy - I can't believe this. Saw you trot off happily on Saturday and now you're back. This is so sad for all concerned. It just breaks my heart the number of boys & girls that have been returned over the past couple of weeks - so disheartening.

Henry is a very handsome black boy who really needs a home of his own now. I walked him today with Santa and the two of them were great - both walking beautifully on a loose lead. I could (almost) be tempted to part-exchange my 2 girls for these handsome boys! Only joking of course...I wouldn't want to deprive the lucky person who picks Henry to be their companion xxxx

I hope the poor lad finds a good home soon, if we had a little more room we would have taken him too, but my other two lads have got their paws full enough as it is with Molly.

I just adore my beautiful Henry, who is now so sad because his kennel mate Molly went to her forever home today. He may be a big black boy, but he is indeed a gentle giant, so calm and quiet he walks beautifully and is always ready for a cuddle. xx

So tempting but can't have another dog right now due to my non grey having health issues and so wouldn't be fare on him or a new dog getting stressed,I'm sure Harry won't be here long (there will be others for me when the time is right)

I keep logging on just to look at this sweet face, what's his temprement like?he looks like he might be full of beans and maybe excitable?? I no some are put off by dogs failing their car test (I don't no how he would be) but our dog certainly failed his but he is amazing and it's not caused us any problems
