Another quiet day for volunteers today, thanks to Denise for opening up. It was very strange not to see Rocky Rockstar in the Kennels but really great he has gone out on foster. He is such a lovely boy and really melts your heart. X We saw the gorgeous Steve reserved today, the lovely people occasionally look after a little dog. They did meet Sparky and Jazz yesterday without little dog, so came back today with little dog. Jazz was a little too interested, Sparky was quite good and although Steve wasn't initially on their 'shopping list' he was such a good boy and he and little Nancy were soon play bowing to each other!! They went away to have a chat and a coffee and returned to say that Steve was the lucky lad. Thanks for the donations of bedding and towels. Despite being short of help the dogs had morning walks, this afternoon it was sand run time. Many thanks to Kitty's family for taking the fabulous Magic to the park and then into Solihull, he was an absolutely fantastic boy with a glowing report. It's turned cold again so all the inmates had their coats on, the heaters and under bed heating on.

Took Magic to Brueton Park today for a change of scenery. He was so excited when he saw the lead and couldn't stop wagging his tail. He jumped straight into the car and settled down for the ride even though it was the first time we had taken him out. Once at the park he was keen to explore and make friends with other dogs. He was so well behaved we ventured into Solihull and was happy to lean on Ned whilst we did a bit of shopping. He was a pleasure to take out and was as good as gold. He is a lovely boy and we will happily take him out again.

Josh
Over the Rainbow Bridge
I have not done an update on Josh for some time. It is because I was not sure how to write his update following his assessment by a certified clinical animal behaviourist (CCAB). If I am honest I am still struggling to get this on paper. Ruth and I had an hour and a half with this sighthound expert, to break it down; • 30-40 minutes was about Josh’s history despite I have given updates via email, photos, and videos and completed an extensive questionnaire. • Ruth and I explained what we had done already, in terms of crates, the use of pens, and a snuffle walk and enrichment. • I was asked if I am aware of thresholds and body language, to me this is basic dog training knowledge. • After the consultation, Ruth and I felt we got nothing new out of this. • Ruth and I tried to get more specific support and that also generated little new detailed guidance. It is like any profession, some are really good and then there are those who are going through the process and fail to listen to their clients. They seemed poorly prepared for the consultation and the report was not much better. One serious omission is that the report did not include a risk management section, with a child of 6 around, this is a must. I had a chat with my mentor about this. She explained that she had a similar scenario with an experienced agility trainer. She indicated that she will first have a video call prior to a consultation. Something I do and I also have free consultations at the kennel. During the consultation, indicated to the trainer she was doing everything she would have suggested and cannot provide further help. If the consultant had done that I would have given them the thumbs up. Unfortunately, what this consultant has done is fish for more sessions for Josh. For me it was also a case of, I probably would have done a better job myself. Let’s talk about Josh, we had quite a number of medication trials. We had about 6 of them with different medication combinations and different daily dosages. Some worked well some were terrible. At one point I was very concerned about Josh as his behaviour seemed odd. I was concerned whether he has Canine Cognitive Dysfunction, the dog version of dementia. Since he has come off Fluoxetine, those behaviours disappeared and he is more or less the normal Josh again. Josh is now on a stable set of medications, which from the start of the medication trials seemed to work well with him. We still have the occasional aggression but this is significantly reduced. I keep working with him, on sounds, and I do a lot of enrichment work with him, including training sessions. The result is that I am now trying to teach him that he is safe when we are around and nice things happen. As a family, we are also learning to trust him a very important part of treatment. I am now working with him when he is not wearing a muzzle. What is so great to see is that he is even starting to play with Caesar or Barney. That is a very important step forward because being able to play means Josh is becoming comfortable and relaxed. I am very pleased with Josh’s progress. He has come a long way over the last 7 months. Certainly, during the last 5 to 6 weeks I have seen a dramatic improvement and using this to even work more closely with him. Touch wood, maybe he will still become a candidate for rehoming. He is such a gentle and affectionate boy

Herbie update! Herbie is doing so well! He is enjoying life, gaining weight and coming to visit later.... can't wait to see him! x I have added some photos of him - all we need to do is find him a forever home! If you are interested in him, he would thrive living with another dog(s) and I would not consider homing him on his own. Regarding medication, we started him on Cobalaplex (which you can buy from Amazon) and it has made a tremendous difference. He is on no other medication and is doing so well.

Good morning everyone x It's Rocky, just checking in. Hope you are all OK. I settled in to my holiday home really quickly, I like to be involved with everything. We went for a walk yesterday and a drive out. The car was OK, I just slept. The walk was OK, those squirrel things are fascinating arent they. I saw a couple of dogs, i'm still trying to suss them out and why new people are trying to help me. I instinctively get a bit grumbly. Anyways, i've eaten my food, i've kept the house clean and after a bit of an unsettled start (i know i was anxious) I finally slept on my own from about 2 am until 7. Which they said I was really superb. I've had my breakfast, been outside and now we're just chilling. Apparently today we're learning manners!! I've quickly learned to 'wait' for my food. Here's to a lovely Sunday guys, Sending love Rocky. Xx (Quick note from me; Hannah) Rocky is as quiet as a mouse!! He has eaten and been clean. Not interested in worktops, stairs or mischief. He's so gentle and is a bit of a people pleaser!! " Did I do that well?! Did I did I?!" He's out on foster with us, He's a credit to himself after so many months in the kennel, he is such a lovely boy xx
