My rescue pony has Cushings and its very common in horses/ponies and seems to be more so in dogs over the last few years. I think it's a tumour on the Pituitary Gland in the brain, the Gland normally regulates body temperature, coat changing etc so when horses have Cushings the body signals don't happen so you usually see a long coat with wavy, greasy hair, the coat isn't shed when Spring comes, increased thirst and they are prone to Laminitis and not all get all the symptoms. My pony was diagnosed two years ago, he's a companion so stays in the field (eating 🙁 ) so I have to be careful of his weight cos the rich grass can increase his tendency to Laminitis but that's normal with ponies anyway. My homeopathic vet has been treating him since he was diagnosed and using homeopathic remedies he does lose his coat, doesn't drink excessively and (touch wood) has only had one brief bout of laminitis but was escaping into the lush grass by limbo-ing under the fence 🙁 so probably would have got it anyway 🙁 He is very bright in himself (not ill) and comes looking for his remedies/tablets, there are some very good medicines for Cushings .. Pergolide from Australia is one so the vet should be able to help Basil tho if he has poorly kidneys maybe see what Chris has to offer? Big hugs for my favourite stripey boy 🙂 Julie xx

Basil's final blood results have confirmed he has Cushings Disease. If I understand it right... this is a condition where the body over produces steroids which causes the skin to break down with infections, the skin becomes thin and papery, loss of fur, bloating, increased drinking and appetite amongst other things (all of which Basil has which is why we took him to the vets). Unfortunately the medication needed to treat this is not good with a dog with bad kidneys which was found on Basil's scan and tests. He is therefore being started on a low dose and will have more tests in 2 weeks time to see how he is doing. My poor boy x

Dodger (Cooper)
I’m Homed
Well! I read Ctoftys new mom's tales of his 'settling in' and I thought how lucky we were that cooper hadn't eaten my phone, remote control..... Or sent cups of tea flying..........HA!!! Cooper must have read Croft'y's tales too............. Came home today to find a shredded book (entitled '50 ways to make your dog smile'. (Yes honestly) and a very chewed sky remote control...... Both on his bed! Bless him! We love this dog to bits, and will work through anything he throws at us:) the 'marking' has stopped...... Although he has started weeing up sherley in the garden, ( poor girl, so undignified!!) but funny:) ( yes of course we are stopping this....... Walking around garden in dressing gown guarding sherley from the yellow shower...... )Gotta see the funny side! It's ok thought, the mangled remote control still works a treat!
