we use a kong and play finding games with her after her late evening walk.Being a lurcher who has been worked I think she feels a bit short changed after her walk. Before the games she has a really mad 5 mins in the garden and I really press the treats in firmly so that she has to work really hard to get them. She tires herself and we no longer have to get up in the middle of the night to let her out. She also sneaks into our bedroom and then is as quiet as a mouse until we get up!

This morning when Jo went for a wee, I noticed a lot of blood on the patio. I was told by her previous owner that she was 3 weeks out of season so I was really concerned. I took her to the vets this morning where she was admitted straight away. An ultra sound confirmed pyometra which is what the vet suspected. (Pyometra is a severe, potentially fatal infection of the womb) She has been put on a drip today and once stabilised hopefully by tomorrow, she is going to be operated on. I will keep you posted and am keeping my fingers crossed for her x

Hi Tash That sounds a great routine but maybe like you say maybe try a longer walk in the afternoon ..does she have a coat on at night? If your heating goes off maybe she's cold and thats why she needs a wee and/or is barking? One of my rooms is warm till you sit on the floor and then you realise how draughty it is so I always rug up my dogs if they're staying in there at night .. something else to try. Baldrick plans our speciality 🙂 Charlie learnt how to open drawers yesterday 🙁 Not good !!! 🙂 Jools xx

Hi Julie, thanks for your suggeestions, I'll increase her evening walk and give her pasta before bed, it wasn't making a difference, but with more walking, the calm tablets and carbs, it might all work together...she has a 45 minute walk and run off lead over the fields in the morning, so I've not worried about her only having a 20-30 minute road walk in the afternoon and a last minute walk before bed, maybe it's not enough...she is bright, I'm teaching her to sit at the moment, which she's getting, so playing games is something she'll enjoy...she slept through until 5 this morning, which I was really pleased about, I let her in the garden and she got restless again when the heating came in 30 minutes later, which is understandable. I'm struggling as to whether I should ignore her (at 5am, she probably needed a wee...) or come down and let her out with minimal attention...it's a good job I love her or she'd be spending her evenings on the naughty step! (I'll tell you about the Labrador ear incident another time...she's a minx!) If I need another Baldrick cunning plan I'll get in touch...thankyou xxxx

I had a feeling Jo might end up as an overnight guest at Hotel Boswell! Really really pleased because I was worrying about her last night and this morning - she looked so lost at the kennels :0(

Hi Tash How much exercise is Penny getting? I'd always suggest to people that they increase the exercise till the dog's get the idea that routine includes sleeping .. for any dog just into homes and not settling/sleeping I'd recommend a good 45 mins to an hour in the morning .. brisk walking and hopefully somewhere like a park where they can overload with lots of lovely doggy smells then afternoon/evening the same again with a late wee walk before bedtime. Maybe have a playtime in the evening when you do games that use their brain like the 'search and find' game or even a Kong but fill it with sticky stuff like mashed potato so they really have to work for it (and if course all dogs in the house should have one as well and all be supervised while they eat). As a late snack or as part of Penny's tea you could also feed her some pasta as carbs should encourage her to sleep .. maybe a cupful mixed with something like a spoon of fish so she eats it all and see how she goes. Let me or Ruth know if that doesn't work and we'll get another cunning plan 🙂 Jools xx
