    Over the Rainbow Bridge

Sarah, we will miss seeing your sweet little face on Wednesday mornings. You gave been a brave and determined little girl over the last few months and, even on Wednesday, you were still up to having a sneaky biscuit off Auntie Denise and a wander round the kennels! Run fast and free little one. Sending hugs to all your family. Xx

    Over the Rainbow Bridge

Sarah (Ballymac Sarah) 09/10/2008 - 02/04/2021 I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken to say that this morning we had to say goodbye to Sarah Scare Bear. She was diagnosed with leukaemia in August last year, despite this she continued to fight. There were several times when we thought it was her time, but she was like a little 'terminator'! Over the past few days her back legs had started to deteriorate and we had to make the hardest decision to see her off to Rainbow Bridge. She was certainly the boss with our other greys. I am so very thankful to Christian and Fivelands for her care over the past seven months of her life, months more than we expected. Thanks to Ruth for giving her the honour of being Miss August in this year's Daybreaks calender. Sarah Scare Bear, I love you so much, words really aren't enough to tell you how much. The boys will miss you so much. You may be no longer by my side, but you will be forever in my heart. Run fast and free beautiful angel. Xxxxxxx

    I’m Homed

I guess Spring and Summer are over, it was back to Autumn again today! After no coats and no underbed heating for the last couple of days, our residents went to bed with coats and underbed heating back on! 🙂 We had a new arrival today, handsome Jack! He was a little stressed this afternoon. He has lived at his racing kennels since he was a puppy and must be feeling very disorientated at the moment. xxx We have another new arrival expected tomorrow. :)) Thanks so much to everyone for their help today. My supervisor, Skip didn't come with me today...I really missed him! Xxx

    I’m a Sponsor Dog

We are all so very sad for Caesar and for the Greyhound injured by him yesterday. Wishing him a speedy recovery. Thinking of Caesar's foster family, it's been a very traumatic time for them. I know they were very fond of him. Xx It would be wonderful if someone could offer Caesar a loving home for how ever long he may have. In 2019 we had lovely Bobby who was diagnosed with liver cancer a few weeks after we fostered him. He was only expected to live for a few weeks. However we had twelve months with him. He was an absolute joy, we were very lucky to have had the pleasure of his company and we have no regrets about taking him on. Xxx Sending lots of love to Caesar tonight. Xxx

    I’m a Sponsor Dog

It is Caesars 2nd Birthday today - I wish it was a Happy Birthday but sadly I have some sad news. Caesar arrived at Daybreaks on the 16th March. He went to the vets on the 19th March for his castrate. Unfortunately whilst he was under anaesthetic for his castrate, the vet found a lump in his mouth under his tongue so an aspirate was sent off for histology. Caesar went to a foster home following his castrate up until yesterday. Unfortunately the results have now come back that the lump is a mast cell tumour. Unless the lump is removed, we will not know if this is a high or low grade tumour. To remove the lump would involve removing a portion of his tongue and therefore a wide margin would not be possible without severely affecting him with his eating and drinking. To make things worse, yesterday Caesar attacked the other greyhound in his foster home resulting in both going to the vets. Caesar only required stapling for a minor wound, sadly the other greyhound required a substantial stitch up. I collected Caesar from the vets last night and he is currently staying with me. The situation with a poor prognosis and the fact that he has bitten another dog, makes him sadly very unhomeable. It is a long shot, but if I could find a foster home for him as an only dog to live out the short time he has left, then please contact Daybreaks Kennels. All costs for his care and treatment will be funded by Daybreaks Trust. If you think you can help, please call Daybreaks on 0121 782 7702 between 10am and 4pm.

    I’m Homed

An update on Locky. On Monday he managed to get the bandage of his paw, I think that was accidental. However, it allowed me to have a look at his paw and the swelling was gone and it looked ok. Of course it was bleeding due to the bandage coming off, so I did my best to replace the bandage. On Tuesday he had check with the vet, he was quite pleased with progress and mentioned that it will take 7 days for it to improve. He also indicated that it may have been an insect bite and explained the timelines which actually made a lot of sense and seemed to be inline with what happened to Locky. On Wednesday he was really doing well putting wait on his paw and walking much better, I felt confident enough to take him for a small walk during the evening. This went well and after a week not being able to go out, I think he really enjoyed it. On Thursday he had an other check-up for his paw, this was looking great and Locky just has a plaster, but Locky being Locky, he has pulled it off in less then an hour so I placed bandage on his paw to prevent him getting to the plaster. Last time I did say that his training and work had stopped, but it did not stop me from doing some tests on him being alone in the house. He is better when Charlotte (our Greyhound) is around but when he is alone he does start to sing beautifully (read howl). So just to avoid separation anxiety developing, he will need to be trained to be alone in the house. In terms of reacting to other dog breeds, he of course still does as we have not been able to expose him to other breeds. Nevertheless, I did make the following observation, he is not as quick to respond to other dogs compared to when I first had him. He is even less responsive to the vocal Westy next door. When he is inside and the Westy starts to bark, he may raise his head but not much more then that. If he is outside and the Westy starts to bark, he may join in, but even this is becoming less of a certainty, at this stage, very good progress. So the strategy of desensitasation is slowly working. In fact I was quite impressed during the Tuesday vet visit as there were lots of dogs around, about 6, and whilst curious he did not go into over excitement mode. During the Thursday morning walk, we came across a number of dogs, medium to small. Again I was pleased as he was starting to get excited but did not go into overexcitement. I was so impressed with Locky during the vet visit on Thursday, many fluffy medium sized dogs but he was very calm. Progress is being made with him, even though we were not able to expose him to more other dog breeds during the last seven days. Locky has a viewing this Saturday, fingers crossed for him that it will go well and that he can start his new life with his forever family :-). You know, for Locky Gentle giant is really the right term. He is big but so lovable and even somewhat sensitive. Sometimes he comes-up and rests his head on your lap for a cuddle. I think the family will find it difficult to resist this boy 😉
