I had a lovely walk with Dizzy again today. No problems with other breeds at all. He loves to be out and about and have a good sniff. He is enjoying a taste of the big wide world and I am enjoying his company. He's a really happy boy and I could watch his ears for hours! They're always pointing in different directions!! Very cute xx

    I’m Homed

Very cold again today, our residents woke up in lovely warm kennels with under bed heating and wall heaters on in addition to their fleece coats. Not the same could be said for the hosepipe, that didn't defrost until this afternoon, I didn't defrost until after I got home!!! Thanks to our Wednesday walkers for braving the cold, I didn't manage to get warm all day! Sadly Ice was returned, his family were absolutely distraught, but he was trying to be very dominant with two of their other greys, they made the right but difficult decision to return him. Many thanks to them for giving him a taste of home life, toilet training him and giving updates on his progress, it was sadly felt that his presence in the home was having an adverse affect on the existing hounds which was unfair to them. He would probably be better as an only 'child'. Resident cat Socks seems to be much better after her trip to the vet on Saturday, she has had several water infections lately and hopefully the medication is now offering her some relief. She seems happier in herself, thankfully. Thanks also to Denise and Chris for their help today, and to Liz_Beth who took Dizzy on another adventure to the park. She said he was trying to sniff and snaffle everything he could, he certainly lives up to his racing name....Snaffi Rascal!! He is such a gorgeous handsome calm boy, please someone give him his forever home. Ok, stay safe and well everyone, tomorrow will be a better day :)))

I love the daybreaks policy and actually wasn't aware of it! So pleased 'troubled' dogs have people like you Ruth as like with people, there's normally an underlying cause and previous owners have done exactly right by gold to give him back rather than give up on him, so well done them too. Good luck gold xxx

Sadly Ice has been returned today, his family are distraught to hand him back. It is felt that he would benefit from being an only child, or may be happy to share a home with a small girly grey as he had started to become dominant with the other male dog and older female dog in the home. He as stated in a previous comment from his owners that he is house trained and great in most other respects. I have to say he is a very strikingly handsome, friendly boy and I am sure his stay with us will be a short one.

    I’m Homed

Unfortunately Gold was returned to my house on Monday. We had seen him at the kennels on Saturday after he had been in the sand run and unfortunately he had caught his dew claw which he happily let me look at. He has gained weight and looked great. However intermittently he has been getting very grumpy with his owners and snapped at them on several occasions in different circumstances which we have been trying to help and advise on. However on Sunday evening whilst having his paws wiped after a walk, he went for his owner and caught his arm and chest. Understandably his owners are getting more anxious and upset with his unpredictable behaviour. I have therefore been assessing him at mine and yes - he can be very grumpy if he is made to do something he doesn't want to do! He had a crate with his previous owners which I had lent him which he liked as it was a safe den but at our house he has a bed that he seems quite happy on. The first day he ran up our stairs but couldn't get down and when I put a slip lead on him to guide him down, his growls were frightening - but equally he was frightened. We popped a muzzle on him and Andy carried the big fella down without a peep! Yesterday at the kennels he was able to wander about but during the course of the day - happily greeting our handful of volunteers and visitors, however one of the volunteers caught his toes as he was shutting the kitchen door = growl (but his foot had been hurt). He has looked so sad since he was returned but I found the way to finally make him happy! A ball! He spent nearly an hour bouncing around with his flashing ball last night and I have put footage on Facebook. At bed time (he sleeps downstairs quietly and is totally and perfectly clean) However Andy went to put his fleecy coat on to be greeted with a growl (oops just like me - I am grumpy when I am tired!) so he slept without a coat last night. This morning, he happily stood to have it put on!!!! This is the second time he has been returned - unfortunately the first time was when he jumped onto the owners bed whilst she was asleep and when she moved without knowing he was there he snapped at her arm causing her to bleed. He seems to know he has done wrong when he snaps as he looks so sad afterwards. The Daybreaks policy is NEVER to put a greyhound to sleep unless it is ill and it is to relieve suffering recommended by a vet. Therefore I am going to keep working with him and will be searching for a very experience owner willing to take him on as a foster hopefully soon. He has been brilliant with Tiggy and Momma but I suspect he may prefer being a home that is quiet (definitely no children). Sorry for the essay but this is to give a clearer picture of Gold as we want what is best for him. Give me a call if you think you can help or have any questions.....

    I’m Homed

I was horrified to see the snow this morning but thankfully the roads were ok. Skip insisted on accompanying me to the kennels despite the cold...don't think he trusts me to go on my own! :)) Lyra wanted to come too but she is only tiny with very little hair on her bottom at the moment, so she had a pyjama day at home with John and Fletcher. :))) Our three current residents Alex, Hollie and Dizzy were very cosy in the kennels, listening to Classic FM when we arrived this morning. Xx Thanks so much to Julie for collecting lots of great donations of food and treats from Pets at Home for us. We are so grateful for their support. Xx We had a visit from an old friend Chris and her beautiful girl Pearl, who had her nails trimmed and Lorna came in to officially adopt Trooper. :)) Such a very happy boy. Xxx It was great to see Jess and Lucy too who took new photos of the dogs for us. Shirley had more bedding to sort, Richard and Declan were busy fixing a leak in Bob's roof! Ruth and Rosie were sorting out paperwork...there is always something to do! If your Greyhound is in need of a warm coat we had a supply of Winter Blizzards in Black, Red and Blue delivered today. :))) Xxx

So sorry things haven't worked out for you and Ice. Sometimes no matter how much we want all to be ok, it doesn't always happen. It has to be right for everyone. I'm sure Ice will soon find another home. Great to read your lovely comments for him. Xxx Thinking of you all. Xxx

    I’m Homed

It is with great sadness and after a lot of discussion and heartache I wanted to let you know that Ice will be returning to Daybreaks. As a failed fosterer of Major, Mavis, Susie and Eric - a badge I don’t mind telling you I wear with pride. I did not think I would become a failed adopter in the true sense of the word. This time sadly we are not the right home for this beautiful boy and his return is through no fault of his own. Ice has been with us for a few weeks. He has met lots of new people, is now house trained and is much improved walking on the lead. He sleeps through the night, is not fazed by stairs, washing machines, tumble dryers or vacuum cleaners - in fact you have to pick his legs up! He is truly a fun loving, energetic and huge character. I feel he would benefit from being the only dog in the household. A home where he is the focus of attention. Ice has so much to give he is just a baby and truly deserves to find a family where he will flourish.
