Queenie (Karen)
I’m Homed
I’ve taken Karen away for the weekend. John is out on a Friday night and we didn’t want to leave her for what would have been 2 hours plus (she’s done 30 minutes ok) but I was due at my mum’s on Friday evening too. So she’s having a weekend at the seaside. Despite the journey taking 4 hours (I should have known what the M1 would be like on a Friday evening) Karen travelled well with only a few grumbles from the back. After initially following me everywhere in a new house she’s now happy to leave my side and find the best places to lie down (by the radiators) and has settled very well. She slept in the same room as me last night but not on the bed with me (we don’t do that in our house). She had a good walk round the village this morning and would have carried on beyond the hour we took (but we were back at mum’s by then). She waited in the van (in a HUGE crate) while I took mum to lunch at the pub in the village and now we’re all back inside with the heating on until tea time and a walk (just round the block) later. Karen is a super affectionate hound (mum loves her) and is confident and ready for a home of her own. Can she have one for Christmas, please Santa?

Thank you Kate for covering the morning as Jo is on annual leave. I arrived at lunchtime and Daybreaks‘stepped into Christmas!’ The decorations are up and I turned the Honesty Box into a little Christmas Shop…. Loads of lovely things to have in return for a donation. Erik bought his daughter Sofia up and she helped with the decorations and bedtime treats for the inmates. Gorgeous Jim is such a sad boy…. After being unreserved as the lady had now found a greyhound from the Dogs Trust, and having major surgery as he had retained testicles, he seems so sad. Also with my commitments to going to Worcester Roadshow all day today, I made the hard decision to leave Lucky at the kennels last night…. She is such a good girl in the house but so stressed in her kennel. Finally I’d like to thank all the volunteers - but especially Chris who did so much. You are awesome.

Rocky was a brave young man yesterday and donated to the Pet Blood Bank. :)) The staff said he was far more interested in the treats they supplied than taking any notice of the blood donation. :)) Xxx

Jim was a little better today. Although he squealed very loudly when his coat touched his wound area. :(( He did enjoy a gentle stroll in the sand run in the morning sunshine....What Jim really needs to speed up his recovery is a lovely home of his own where he can be pampered and loved. Xxx Xxx

What a very wet and cold start to the day! It is certainly beginning to feel more like winter. 🙁 We did manage to go out for morning walks as the rain eased up for a while. Many thanks to everyone who ventured out to come to the kennels to go for walks. :)) Xxx The Pet Blood Bank came today. There were several Pet dogs who donated today including first time donors, Betty and Sammy! Well done to them both. Trust dogs Rocky and Robbie were first time donators too. :)) Xxx If you are interested in your Greyhound becoming a blood donor and would like more information please contact the Pet Blood Bank on 01509 232 222 :)) Jim had a check up at the vets this afternoon. He is still very sore after his recent Neutering operation. Sending him lots of love tonight. Xxx Thanks so much to everyone for your help today. Xxx

Well care Assistant and Kennel Hand As Daybreaks Kennels is now fully governed by Daybreaks Trust (registered charity 1142270) with a new committee of Trustees, the decision has been taken to now employ someone as a Well Care Assistant. Previously, the wellcare package offered at Daybreaks Kennels was carried out by volunteers. It is felt that this paid position is part of the continuing expansion and improvements for Daybreaks. We are therefore looking for a motivated person who is available for initially 3 days a week which includes some weekends including some of our events at the kennels. The applicant must be flexible in their work availability and have experience and knowledge of dogs – greyhounds in particular. They must be capable of doing the Daybreaks well care packages and assisting with bathing and health checking of the Trust dogs in addition to general kennel duties and other kennel related tasks. Full training will be given. The applicant must be an enthusiastic team worker and must be willing to work alongside work experience students and those with disabilities. The well care service consists of bathing, blow drying, nail clipping, grooming, teeth and ear clean of mainly greyhounds but the service may accommodate different breeds. A qualification in dog grooming would be desirable but not essential. The applicant must be able to drive and have a current valid clean driving licence. Please forward your CV and covering letter to ruth.price@daybreakstrust.co.uk Closing date for applications is 12 midday on Wednesday 30th November with interviews taking place shortly after. Salary will be discussed at interview.

At closing time tonight I was looking for a suitable fleecey coat for Baby to wear...I left her kennel door slightly open when I popped down to the end of the corridor to find a fleece and when I turned around there she was right behind me waiting for cuddles! She is a very sweet girl. Xxx

Jim

Our beautiful Jim had his Neutering operation yesterday. He had to have an intrusive operation as he only had one visible testicle, so the Vet had to look for the other one. It was found, just the size of a pea! Jim is very sore and bruised after his ordeal and spent the day in the office snuggled on a bed under the desk. He has eaten and he wagged his tail when he came out for a wee. He is a very special lad...hoping he will start to feel better tomorrow. Xxxxxx

We’ve had Karen as our latest house guest for not quite a week. She’s a lovely, confident hound. Very affectionate. She’s learnt to do stairs and has found the human beds upstairs. She very much wants to be part of the gang and chooses the dog bed in the centre of the lounge rather than the one at the end of the room furthest away from us and our other dogs. She queues nicely with the rest of our gang for treats and has good food manners. She walks well on lead with our other hounds and also small dog (Pod). She’s interested in squirrels but isn’t an idiot for them. She’s met lots of different dogs breeds now too and has been fine with all of them. She’s an opportunist counter surfer and a bit keen at doors and gates (you have to be careful to keep her back or she’d follow or get out ahead of you). But other than watching those two things she’s ready for a king sized bed of her own. And she’s nailed roaching now too!

Rocky walks so nicely on the lead. He can be a bit unpredictable with some of the other dogs but a very firm 'no' and praise when he resists seems to sort him out. He is very loving and very handsome. Big cuddles for this lovely big boy xxx

Thanks to everyone for their help today. It was a day filled with nail cutting, I think it was at least seven dogs!! Mikey had another trip out today, sadly there were no sausage sandwiches left, instead he had a sausage roll minus the pastry, at least it was a change for Ned who usually has the sausage flavour bread and had to make do with the pastry!!!! Thanks for taking him out. We were short on volunteers this morning, thankfully this afternoon was a little better so the inmates had a longer walk this afternoon. Our calendars are selling well, Peanut was a great ambassador today, anyone who met her said how cute she is, so Miss August stepped up and persuaded people to make a purchase!
