Keep up the good work Prince, you will get there in the end, after all you are still a baby, we have has two 18 month old Greyhounds at different times and we know how playful they can be. It's fantastic that you have foster parents who are willing to put in the time and effort to show you what is acceptable greyhound behaviour, ultimately making your life and the family that eventually welcomes you into their lives and home easier and happier, we wish you lots of luck and happiness for the future xxxxx

Prince
I’m Homed
Prince has had a week of progression behind him. As LadyVictoria mentioned we came around the kennel last Tuesday. This was to pick-up extra bedding. Prince weed on his own bedding and committed a cardinal sin and weed twice on our bed. When Prince was at the kennel, he had 2 more large wees. Which led LadyVictoria to suggest, getting Prince checked by the vet to make sure it is not a medical problem. This is what I did, and the vet confirmed it is not medical but behavioural. I think it was quite amusing for LadyVictoria to see first-hand Prince’s behaviour at the kennel. As mentioned before, he is simply a young toddler who needs lots of guidance and support. What does he get up to at home: • Does not respond to his name • Thinks our daughter is a toy • He wees where he feels like • Puts his front paws on the table or bench to grab something • He drinks tea and coffee • He walks in the kitchen when he has the chance To name but a view. Over the last week I started to work with him to get him house trained. Some of the behaviours I would expect, dogs are scavengers and opportunists. This means that if there is an opportunity to get food, they will take it. As a result, we need to change our behaviour to help them not display behaviours we do not want. Charlotte has been with us for 6 years, she knows the rules, but if the kitchen door is open and we are not around, she will go there and get in the bin or find food she knows might be there for the taking. Through positive reinforcement, I worked with Prince to recognise his name. This is starting to work now. First, he raised his eyes, now he raises his head, and we are making continued progress. Similar with the weeing in the house. When he wees in the garden or during the walk, we praise him and give him a treat. He is also improving on this front we had 2-3 accidents, but he is keeping his wee overnight all great progress. With my daughter he is also getting better. It is difficult to not let a 4-year-old make lots of noise and wild movements. My daughter understands and equally Prince is getting better not to respond to my daughter’s frantic movements and noises. This is achieved through distraction techniques and positive re-enforcements. I can deal with him due to my studies, knowledge and experience which enables me to keep my daughter save. I am sorry if I sound arrogant. For placement, I would suggest that Prince may not be suitable for families with young children. Other dogs? This week I have seen him interact positively with other dogs. I now belief that he does his high pitch barking as to indicate, I see another dog and I want to meet and greet you. Again, through positive reinforcement I have manged to calm that down. I am now a bit more confident that he could get on with other dogs. Prince has met poodles, a small Jack Russel, a Yorkshire Terrier and Labradors he was curious and sometimes not sure what to make of them. Like Charlotte he has displayed stalking behaviour, but this did not result in a pounce. We also saw a gentle side to Prince this week. As we are walking more, for Charlotte, it was a bit too much and when her rear paw was every uncomfortable and started to limp. Prince lay down with her, which seemed out of sympathy (they normally lay in different places). Prince does enjoy the walks 3 times a day, he loves playing, and chewing toys. For the chewing toys even KONG toys are no match for his jaws. Next week we will do some vigorous activities with him now his wound has almost healed. The statement I made last week still applies. Prince is a kind, clumsy, young boy who loves to play with anything fluffy and behaves like a toddler. He can be a hand full but also good fun. I am really pleased with the great progress he has made over the last week.

Daybreaks Diary!
I’m Homed
It was a very wet day today! I knew I made the right decision not washing my hair last night! :)) We had a busy day with visitors to the kennels for food, nail clipping and the sand run. It was so lovely to see lots of previous Daybreaks residents. Belle, Coffey, Indi, Billy, Sam, Ed, Jag, Ely and Russ! :)) Xxx Paddy was officially signed up and is now known as Padre...which really suits him! :)) Ruth moved a lot of her belongings back to the kennels. 🙂 She is having work done to her house....we were reminiscing about the time she and other volunteers had a sponsored sleep over in the kennels for a week in the freezing cold of winter to raise much needed funds!! Perhaps camping in the sand run next?! :)) Helen, I saw the cots Jo and Dave put together today...very nice and big enough for a Greyhound to have a lovely snooze in! :)) Don't think that's what they are for though!! Thanks to Lynne and Simon for their help today. Lynne is working on something really exciting for everyone to join in with. :)) Sure all will be revealed soon. Xxx The new fleeces arrived today. They are beautiful! 🙂 Blue, Grey and Brown with little foxes on. :)) They are £28 each. Xxx Xxx

My hoomans are not doing my food on time! I ask for it and they say no and say I’m too early!? How it’s my feeding time my stomach is empty and I need food! Apparently they said the clocks went back and I still think it’s the same time! No clue what they are on about. I’ll just follow you around and bark at you until you do it. Yeah that will work. Russ Xx

Scooby
I’m Homed
Scooby is a lovely hound and has settled in nicely. He has explored every inch of the house downstairs and the garden and can be seen to be learning everything as he walks around. He likes the kitchen, loves his food and after some pacing around does lie down peacefully. Perfect overnight; enjoying his sleep. He’s a big and young, and behaves so well both at home and when out on walks. Let’s see what he can learn during Saturday morning training……

Dave and I had temporary day release this morning to go on a delivery and collection mission! On arriving back at the Kennels it was the next challenge to build a cot (note to anyone who is expecting, start building your cot now, its more involved than you may think, Krypton Factor sprung to mind, Chris and myself are obviously out of practice)!! I managed to catch up with most of our foster families this afternoon, great news is that things are going really well. Thanks to all of you for opening your hearts and homes to our residents during this difficult time. X We missed Angie today, but needs must and she needs to stay safe especially with Mike's health concerns. Well, I'm back in on Sunday and already have set a mental list of tasks to do whilst we have the time to do so. Take care, stay safe and remember if you need anything from the Kennels please give us a call and book an appointment. X

Happy 3rd Gotcha day to Shandy, Can’t believe we have had her 3years already feels like yesterday she came home with us......her recent new found skill is how to get me off my chair so that she can have it and get comfy:-), oh and this year she has decided she doesn’t care about fireworks anymore haha.....she’s still enjoying lovely walks and playing fetch in the garden (her catching skills are brilliant)......We wouldn’t be without her and she is happily munching on a pigs ear in front of the fire to celebrate.....Shandy said she would prefer an ostrich bone and isn’t happy we haven’t got her one yet!!! Well done to everyone for their fabulous work at daybreaks and to everyone that has homed a Grey-we are looking forward to Tiggys fundraising christmas online auction.

It felt very strange not being at the kennels today - but with no residents to look after and a core of great volunteers who are keeping everything else under control, I have taken the decision to stay at home now during lockdown. With Michael being in the extremely clinically vulnerable group, we don't want to take any unnecessary risks - but I am not being idle! I have been chatting with Miss Tiggy and we are now ready to launch her fundraising Christmas online auction!! We have lots of really great items that will make lovely presents for the 2 and 4 legged folk in your lives! We have brought the starting date forward a bit to the 20th November to make sure everyone gets chance to have a look and a bid! Hope everyone is staying safe, and managing during this very difficult time for us all. I will be raising my usual glass later - this time to all our boys & girls out in foster homes, sending their foster families many thanks for taking care of them and hoping that maybe one or two will get their paws under the table and just might not return to kennels when lockdown is over!! Angie xxx

Such a great day! I sent Jo and Dave on a 'drop off and collect' mission this morning whilst I stayed in the office and attacked the paperwork mountain. Chris arrived and fed the chickens and cats and then by this time Jo and Dave were back and they set to work building two wooden cots that had been donated for us to sell to raise funds. It is quite strange not having any residents on site but Jo was set the task of giving all our wonderful foster families a call this afternoon and hopefully our Daybreaks kids are enjoying themselves! We have a busier day tomorrow with food collections and nail clipping so if you want to book, we are doing spaced appointments and adhering to COVID guidelines. I have just finalised the calendars (yayyyy) and these should be available from early next week - we will keep you posted. Stay safe everyone x

Far too long a story but his ( or her) Name is Hedgy and this is a page about Greyhounds but Im sure when greyhounds meet Hedgy the tortoise sometime in the next few years , it will be a story to tell ( why the hell cant I just call it IT) that's because he or she has life and soul and is now part of our life , But Celia and Jess need to age and mellow a bit and Hedgy needs to get a bit bigger so they don't think he( or she) is a crunchy snack , I Cant wait to introduce them though and I think even in 12 months time , Knowing Celia she will still freak out and run away despite being so confident around pancakes and Coca Cola , the three of us are off to bed now without tortoise who's quiet happy in his or her bed under some rocks , we have a 13 tog quilt and the heating on, Thats enough Jeffrey , this is supposed to be about Greyhounds so stop it go to bed and wake up with teethmarks on your head and a stiff neck because you have a greyhound contorting your sleep position just as you always like it and you know you wouldn't want it any other way so don't pretend you do

A lovely Autumn day.... a good day for cleaning! 🙂 Thanks so much to Yvonne and Shirley for all their hard work around the kennels. Xx Thanks to Alan and Declan for going on a trip to the Warehouse. If you need food, we have plenty in stock. Just call us at the kennels to arrange a day and time to collect. 🙂 Skip is getting used to wandering around the kennels and doing just as he pleases, but I think like us he misses seeing other Greyhounds around...hoping it won't be long before we hear the patter of lovely Greyhound paws in the kennels again. :))) Xxx
