I, too, suggest (and highly recommend) Julie's training class. She teaches lots of techniques and gives great advice. x

I'm writing to ask for advice about our boy. Unfortunately he's still reactive to other dogs (non greyhounds), in particular small breeds. We always walk him on the lead and he wears his muzzle, just in case. If other dogs come anywhere near him, he goes bananas and lunges, growls and barks. I'm convinced that this is because he's afraid of them, rather than outright aggression. Most people in the area are good at keeping their dogs at a safe distance, but there's always the odd one whose dog is off lead and comes up to investigate! We were wondering whether you could suggest any tips or techniques to make walks less stressful?

    I’m Homed

Another settled night. Sam likes playing with squeaky balls and dedding the squeakers. This morning he dragged the vet bed off the conservatory sofa and yesterday he very cagily stole a lace ribbon off the table - he did drop it when I told him to. He is so funny. I've started to do some training with him around food and treats as that's when he's the most bouncy and strong at the moment. He is starting to respond to "bed" and he does lie down for his treat eventually using the techniques learnt in our training classes. He's also started to learn what is our food and that he needs to keep away from us then. He walked really well in his evening walk and still wasn't phased by any of the noises, people, other dogs etc. Given the feedback about separation anxiety, today's task is to see how he gets on when left in the house just with the other 2 for a very short period. We'll only be next door and can watch on the camera. Lynne x

Sara was an inspiration, she never complained unless it was using the wrong food bowls. She was and will always be a massive part of Daybreaks. You will be very sadly missed. You are and will be a huge part of Daybreaks, rest safely Sara, words cannot express the feelings we have of losing you. Resting in peace with Rob, Cracker and Charlie, watch over us, and look after our hounds at the bridge. Xxxxx

I never had the privilege of meeting Sara but have seen via the comments what an integral part of Daybreaks she was so would like to say I will be thinking of all the Daybreaks staff, volunteers and of course Sara’s family at this sad time.

What a fabulous dog! He's a beautiful big, strong boy. He is interested in what's going on around him and enjoys interaction with people. Xxxxxx

LM, thank you so very much for taking Sam out of kennels for a couple of days. So pleased to hear he has been settled, maybe what he needs is the company of a friend or two. Look forward to hearing how the rest of his stay goes. Hopefully if all goes well with you he may have a new family to take him home with them with their houndies!

We've been looking after Sam for only 24 hours and we're already smitten. He has the cutest face, softest eyes and funniest floppy ears! He hasn't been phased by anything - we'd just got him out of the van when we brought him home when a very loud ice cream van stopped outside the house - he merely looked! He is incredibly inquisitive inside the house, as expected, but can be led away other than when there's food around. We've fed the 3 of them together with no problem thus far - he'll need a slow feeder as he wolfs his food down. I'll try him with one for the afternoon feed. Simon stayed up until about 11.30pm with him last night and I went earlier in case I had to get up in the night/early given that the reports are that he has separation anxiety. We put a thundershirt on him. It's the best night's sleep we've had in ages - Skip usually wakes us up in the night/6am, but I got up at 6.45 before there was any noise from any of them. There was no mess. I checked the cameras and all 3 had stayed in their respective beds all night. We took Skip and Sam on a walk in the woods/field this morning - about 30 minutes - and, whilst strong, Sam was controllable. He wasn't phased by the traffic and was fine when we saw and passed by other dogs. I know things can change quickly when a dog is in a different home and I'm on my own with the 3 of them this afternoon and tonight so I'll post again tomorrow with an update, but hopefully he'll stay settled. We'll then be testing out leaving him on his own (with the other 2 dogs) for a short time. Watch this space......

  • 2019 Daybreaks Diary!

    I’m Homed

Today was greyt! I thought it would be quiet, it was first thing with just myself, Dave who came especially as we thought we would be short of volunteers, Ollie who was back from holiday and Bella. Throughout the day more people turned up, thanks to you all. Sam got to go out on a lovely walk with Skip and his mom and dad. They have very kindly fostered him for a couple of days to give him another taste of home life. Lovely Buster was reserved, all being well he will have a pretty lurcher sister called Poppy to play with. Ruby Rebel came in with his mom and dad to do some walking, turns out today is his first gotcha day, I told him that fish and chips is a must on this day and birthdays too! We had a visit from Reggie and Ronnie, the grey twins, they looked great. The Melbicks road show has been a great hit, we had people who went there come to the kennels afterwards to offer their services for volunteering. Thanks too to everyone who took their greyhounds to show what greyt pets they make. If you would like to make an entry in the memorial book for Sara, please pop into the kennels, she was such a big part of Daybreaks and will be sorely missed. X

    I’m Homed

We took Sam to the Hall Green Worcester walk today to give him a break from kennels. He needed a bit of help getting into the soft crate in the campervan but lay down straight away and travelled without a sound. He walked very well and merely looked at other breeds, no pulling. Off lead dogs playing in the field interested him but he didn't pull or bark. A quick pull on the lead and a call and we were on our way. We went to the cafe after with the other greyhounds and owners and he was VERY interested in treats and human food so will need training but the fact he's food orientated should help enormously with training. We took him back to kennels and could hear him whining once in his kennel (not unusual at feeding time and with people around) but it tugged on my heart strings especially as he's such a baby. So we've brought him home for a day or 2 to see how he gets on in a home with other dogs - we have Bert 13 and Skip 5. Right now they are all flat out after a busy day but we haven't left them alone. When one of us goes out of the room, Sam goes to the gate but we think it's inquisitiveness at this stage. He clearly loves people. He didn't make any noise. I'll put another post on tomorrow. Hopefully he'll sleep! Also I hope Skip sleeps as he's finding it a bit odd having a newbie around. Bert doesn't seem to care less! He takes it all in his stride.

We are appealing for owners with other breed dogs to help us with Honey and the other current residents at Daybreaks. As you know many (not all) of these dogs are unsocialised with other breeds and this is why we use muzzles. With our help and training we can overcome this but we need your help! With Sara visiting, we used to have the help of Louis the Border Collie but sadly this will not be so often now. My second greyhound Holly was terrible with other breeds - whether they were larger or smaller than her as she just didn't understand what she was dealing with. It took several months but she ended up not needing her muzzle as she became great with all breeds, even cats, became Pets As Therapy registered and even was used for helping a child overcome his fear of dogs. Honey was returned from her previous home because she ended up biting another dog because she was unmuzzled whilst out with a dog walker. Therefore we want to ensure we can do everything we can for her to help continue to socialise her. Therefore if you are an owner of another breed especially if they are used to Greyhounds (as we don't want to scare them), please could you give the kennels a call on 0121 782 7702 between 9am and 5pm so we can arrange for you to visit and help us out.
