Although we humans are always sad when a dog is returned from a home the dog him or herself is not on every occasion quite so down in the dumps. Living proof of this today was Bandit who this morning at Daybreaks appeared to be his usual happy bouncy self with no air of melancholy about him whatsoever. We went for a nice walk in Brueton Park (which he always loves to do) and his reported lameness seemed to consist of the ocassional hop while on rough ground(pad on his right hind leg appeared slightly tender) but there was no problem while walking on smooth paths or grass. His behaviour as ever while in the park was perfect. Elvis may not have wanted to return to Heartbreak Hotel but Bandit has no problems with returning to 'Daybreaks Hotel' ! However we are all obviously hoping for that permanent home to arrive soon for this huge character of a dog.

I think it's always worth remembering where these hounds come from, for most of their lives there world is a small one, apart from when they go racing and then taken in a back of a van, most of the time is spent in a relatively small environment. A bird that as spent sometime in a cage won't come out even with the door left open. We have a situation at the moment with Blade, for the last six years he as lived in an urban environment and now finds himself in the country. Most people would think great, but to Blade WTF,very strange smells everywhere, small fury things that pop up out of no where and scare the poo out of you, not to mention big things with horns not to far away, they look very mean. So for the first couple of months he stuck close to Bertie and Bertie did a great job showing him the ropes, and slowly he started to become his own man and explore his new environment and you could see him really beginning to enjoy his new life. Now the crops in the fields have started to appear, so for the next few weeks we are surrounded with bird scarers banging off every half hour or so. Poor old Blade finds them all to much and will hardly come out of the house, given time and space he will come to learn alls ok. Bertie, in the beginning when he was on his bed, half a sleep you could not go to close, he was liable to wake and growl and while raising his head Startled if your face or hand was in range he may of caught it with his teeth, some would then have said he bit me. Which if cause he hadn't, it's his way of saying leave me alone. Michelle was always distressed by this, because with our last boy Charlie she would spend her evenings on the floor using Charlie as a pillow and no way with the Bert, to risky. But now due to time, I can report Michelle is once again spending her evenings on the floor with a four legged cushion. It takes time for us to trust, and let's face it for a lot if us that trust as been misplaced at times, so we can't expect a grey to give us their trust over night, we have to earn it. That takes time. Roy

Hiya .. You're doing really well and you're right - greyhounds are very different to 'real' dogs LOL, their responses, upbringing, love of routine, lack of knowledge of the world etc etc make them very special 🙂 Keep asking - we've all been through it and we're here to help 🙂 Best wishes Julie

Thanks everyone for your encouraging comments. This week so far she does appear to be a bit better, starting to come to you when you walk in the room and even ventured into the living room last night albeit for a split second but it's all positive and in the right direction. Let's hope she has no scares as that seems to set her back by weeks.

Isla, I'm delighted you had a lovely day out at Stratford on Sunday. Sounds like you were such a good girl and enjoyed the change of being out and about for a while in the sunshine playing with new friends. Big cuddles pretty girl. xx

Jed came into the lounge and stayed, he lay down on the rug and snoozed away for at least an hour. I can't say what a milestone achievement this is up until now he has only popped his head round the door or come in and gone straight out again. So so proud of him tonight!!!

I was so very sad to see Bandit returned today, I really hoped he had at last found his forever home. 🙁 However he is still our happy, bouncy Bandit. He is a special boy and deserves a very special home. Xxx

Thanks both for you words of advice and also to Kate too. I think having a few things to keep him occupied is a great idea - he is very curious with everything going on so something to distract and preoccupy him would help. He hasn't been that interested in the normal toys that we have got for him but I've ordered a Nylabone and also Thundershirt (never knew such things existed but having done some reading it may well suit him). Also going to try the worn tshirt - don't know why I didn't think of that. Andy's also going to be doing more of the feeding and walking - whilst Champ's arrival timed with the lovely weather has been great for me, for Andy it's meant having to catch up on a lot of farm work and not having the time with Champ we had planned. My concern has not been about the things he has chewed but that I was not doing the right things to help him settle - we've had dogs for years but having a greyhound is obviously going to be very different, especially compared to the 2 we have now. On the plus side, house training is going really well - he goes to stand by the back door now when he needs to go and we have had no accidents since Saturday (and never at night). Today has also been much better - he seems a bit more settled, has shown a little interest in toys and is spending more time with the girls and in his bed. I've been doing things in other parts of the house for short periods and then coming back to him. He was curious and concerned at first but by tonight he has taken less notice - when I told him I was going for a shower he didn't even move from his bed and he was still there when I came back. He is a super chap so he will have all the time and patience he needs. At the minute he is fast asleep with Daisy alongside him again xx

Oh gosh Ruth I am really upset to hear about bandit , I just hope he is ok and his leg is ok, my heart just goes out to the returnees especially for Bandit as he waited so long for his chance to be rehomed, what a sad start to the week, I will keep all my fingers crossed that Bandit is ok and recovers from his lameness 🙁

    Over the Rainbow Bridge

Well our beautiful little addition to the family has had another eventful day. After her deciding that the best time to start playing with her squeaky toy was just as we got into bed, John slept on the floor with her last night as she was up and down checking to make sure we were still close at hand. We all synchronised and had a 2am wee break (us indoors and Rosie up the road) before settling back down again. Waking at 6ish, she was as good as gold going out into the back garden to have another. Breakfast was a treat with a little sprinkling of grated cheese on top of her Burns, which I'm convinced she ate slightly slower than yesterday. Today Rosie has seen 'Nan' again and had lots of cuddles from her and auntie Jacky. We've been on two 45 minute walks and a short 15 minute route late afternoon. She ate all her tea at 4.15 which was a cup of Burns and cooked shredded chicken. A few short naps on the lounge rug/duvet/blanket set up, but always keeping one eye on us to know where we are. We've brought 3 runners for the laminate flooring which have been a great help to her getting around when excited. We adore this girl to bits and do hope that she knows we're going to be around for a very, very long time. Tash & John

Just to let you know that a greyhounds straight line on a walk is probably not the same as ours - I have the same problem with Jed I'm sure if observed some might think we had a slight drink problem!!
