I am so sorry to hear your story, it is abundantly clear that you love Cleo with all of your heart, I cannot even begin to imagine the hurt you are going through, but I personally think you are doing the right thing by returning your beloved girl due to your circumstances, Daybreaks will find her another perfect home but at least you got to spend 3 very happy years together which I'm sure you will both never forget. Keeping you both in my thoughts xxxxxx

It was our baby Sam's 2nd official Gotcha Day last Monday (after a few days fostering). Unfortunately Daddy had a hospital appointment so it wasn't quite the day we'd wanted but Sam had a nice walk with Skip and Nadie. He's always spoilt anyway! x

The hoomans seem to think me stealing the washing up bowl is hilarious! They laugh every time I play with it. What’s so funny? It’s my favourite toy. Hopefully I’ll be seeing Florence soon if the covid restrictions are eased as planned! Florence just so you know you will love the wood by our house. So many squiggles and so many beautiful flowers to water. I’ll show you around you will love it! I might get distracted if I see a cat though just to warn you. Can’t wait to see you! A couple of weeks ago we found out that there are more Greyhound friends on our caravan site!!!! How exciting! The beach was amazing and it’s so good to be back. I decided to take my whole toy box on the sofa and make a mess. Hoomans just let me do my thing hehe. Lubs Russ Xx

  • Daybreaks Diary!

    I’m Homed

It was so good to see the sunshine today, and the lovely day meant morning & afternoon walks for the residents and 2 lines of washing dried! Lisa was very happy to be able to go out on a short walk now, as we build her stamina and muscle tone following her broken hock. She is an absolute delight, so cheeky and affectionate. She spent the day in the outside feeding runs today, happily watching the comings & goings at the kennels and I found her upside down on the bed this afternoon, legs in the air, smiling away. Let's hope she is next for a red sign. Whilst most of our current residents are reserved, please don't forget about our boys and girls out in foster care. Most are still in need of forever homes, and their foster carers will be more than happy to bring them in for viewing or provide more information about how they doing in a home environment. On this note, the delightful Barney will be in kennels on Sunday. He is receiving glowing reports from his foster Dad and is ready for his forever home now - let's hope it's his lucky day on Sunday. Great news - providing the easing of Covid restrictions stays on course, we have arranged our first fundraising event since January 2020!! We are so grateful to Mike Stewart-Lawrence and his band who are staging a fundraising concert at the Dovehouse Theatre on Saturday 11th September with all proceeds going to Daybreaks Trust. Stay tuned for further information - but wont it be great to be able to socialise again?? Well, as is usual for a Friday the wine bottle will be opened later - and I will toast a busy weekend ahead with homings, viewings and new arrivals booked. As ever, stay distanced, stay safe one and all - cheers! Angie xx

    Over the Rainbow Bridge

Today has been the most heartbreaking day of my life. I returned Cleo to Daybreaks. I adopted Cleo three years ago and she has been the most perfect dog, a dream come true, she’s the best dog in the world. A lot has changed over three years including me getting a new job a month ago which has impacted mine and Cleo’s relationship massively. The amount of time I work has significantly increased, meaning Cleo has been left for 10+ hours a day. This is far from okay. Ruth has gave me the opportunity to explain a bit about the circumstances and to express that I am far from abandoning my dog. I have went through every single possible route to try and keep her, but when it comes down to it the only reason would be due to my selfishness. Yes I love her, more than anything, yes I will miss her. But every single day that I’m at work she’s left in the house alone and she’s missing me. She deserves SO much better than that. This hasn’t been a light decision believe me. Usually when I see that a dog has been returned I scowl and ask how on earth could anyone do that, a dog is for life! But unfortunately life changes drastically sometimes and my life just isn’t good enough for Cleo anymore. She deserves all the love care and attention in the world, nothing less. I have been arguing with myself but this is for HER, not me. The wonderful people at Daybreaks have reassured me she will receive this and I know for certain they’re going to find the perfect new home for her. Never in a million years would I have thought I needed to do this, but to make sure Cleo’s happy again was my main priority and I sadly couldn’t provide that amount of care to her anymore. Cleo is a wonderful girl who has blessed my life over the past 3 years, she has imprinted on me massively. Not all returnees are simply abandoned, this isn’t a case of me not wanting her anymore. It’s me wanting a better life for her which she definitely deserves. I cannot thank Daybreaks enough for being so comforting and understanding today and to whoever adopts Cleo, I will forever be in debt to you.

  • Barney

    I’m Homed

Barney has given us lots of entertainment the last couple of days, he is such a funny character that he makes us smile. Specially together with Ceasar they do have fun together. Barney has a habit of taking shoes, slipper, his bowl, washing up glove or even taking his leash and then placing them in different places in the house or garden. I also discovered a pattern in this behaviour, he does this when he wants a walk. if I do not give him a walk after lunch he is much more likely to do this then when he has had a lunch walk. Barney is a dog who does like his exercise. Currently he gets a 20 minutes walk in the morning and 20-30 minute walk after lunch. A 10-20 minute walk to pick-up our daughter and my wife will take them for a 20-30 minute walk in the evening. On top of this he may want to play with toys or with Caesar. Barney is not one who will be satisfied with a 30 minute walk a day. I am really please with Barneys progress, both his response to other dogs and getting used to being alone. In terms of other dog breeds, he is now at a stage where he is almost not responding to other dog breeds and this is consistent. So the positive reinforcement is working with him. In terms of being alone we done quite a bit of exercises with him this week and different timings sometimes short, sometimes long. Overall his reaction is less nervous and sometimes not making much, even soft whining noises. He does whine habitually but even this has reduced significantly. So that is really well done Barney. This Sunday will be a little bit of a test for him and I hope he will do really well. The family needs to go away for the day and unfortunately I cannot take all 3 dogs with me. Specially as there are 2 Italian Greyhounds residing where we need to go. I felt it better to take Caesar as we do not know how long he has got, so it be a nice adventure for Caesar. It does mean that Barney will stay at the Kennels on Sunday and stay the night. I am having my fingers and legs crossed that it will be a positive experience for Barney and he will take it in his stride. It would be such a shame if it becomes a set back for him. This is why it is so important for him to get his forever home. So he can settle in a home he can truly call his own. If you like Barney why not arrange a visit this Sunday 🙂

  • Daybreaks Diary!

    I’m Homed

Oh my! What a day! I was not in last week so today I had a very busy day booked in the diary - three corn bookings, nails to trim, mountains of paperwork and the phone did not stop! I am unfortunately getting lots of calls about separation anxiety and today a 7 year old girl (homed direct from a trainer who had been in a home for 3 years) was brought in for rehoming - it is heartbreaking. I am very thankful for the offers of help with her and she has gone out to a foster home this afternoon. I am sorry for all the missed calls - I have tried to return all that I can. Running Daybreaks can be extremely busy, stressful and emotional sometimes - however the fabulous team I have with Kate, Jo and all the volunteers along with all the support I have, allows me to keep helping all the dogs that come to Daybreaks. We are now welcoming back our volunteers but we are still only having a limited number on site so please let us know if you would like to pop back to help. For all visitors we are still operating an appointment system and I am pleased to say we have plenty of new arrivals, viewings and homings booked!
